The One Big Mistake About Last Night's Game

On the two point conversion - how come demarco murray was not lined up in the backfield to at least keep the defense honest about the run. When you send 5 receivers out wide the only thing you can do is pass or QB sneak. That was my only real complaint with the coaching last night. Thoughts?

I see your point, but whether or not Murray was in the backfield, I don't think it would made any difference in how Williams defended Dez. Witten did a good job of getting open too. It may have been a mistake to go empty backfield, but there were a lot bigger mistakes made last night.

Its not just last night. I cannot understand when its relatively short yardage, why there isnt a RB in the backfield. This happened not long ago in another game. I am with you 100%.

Yeah- I feel you.

Right as they were lining up- I felt the tight grip in my gut telling me they were going to fail.

Nothing looked like success from what they were going to run and true to form- failure.

Forget about not lining Demarco up back there to keep the defense honest, you line Demarco up back there to punch it in for two points. But our spineless coach would rather be cutesy and call a rollout. Like Lombardi said "if you can't gain one yard..." yada yada yada.

I agree that you run the ball there too, but hell even if you're deadset on passing you are going to draw some LB to the line of scrimmage.

Romo throws that one to Witten. You go empty backfield there to get that classic "post" move from 82

That wasn't the rollout play. That came on the 4th and 1 (which we should have run the ball). The 2-pointer was the back shoulder to Dez, that Orton practically one hopped and Williams made a great play on.

That and Witten int. Game like that, your top guys can't make those mistakes

Yep. The ball was a little behind Witten, but he has to catch that. Seen a few of those for him. He struggles to adjust to the ball behind him, and usually ends up tipping it enough for it to be intercepted.

1) We had already abandoned the run, so it wasn't even a thought.
2) Why not look at Escobar again?

I think the biggest mistake was to lock in on Dez only.

Witten was wide open.........I mean wide freaking open............easy pitch and catch for Romo and the game is tied...............Orton locked onto Dez and never even looked at anybody else, he totally telegraphed the play all the way.

Sometimes I wonder why the Cowboys even have RB's on the roster given the way that JG uses (or doesn't use) them...

Took them 12 weeks to get a fullback, running game picked up, then they stopped using him.

Biggest game of the year, back up QB starting and where is the fullback.. massaging Orton's arm between series.

I agree that it should have been a run. I also agree that Witten was a better target. But tell me this. Why in the heck did we throw it LOW to Dez in that situation? Put it up high and let it do what it do.

I think even Philly knew we weren't going to run it at that point.

my only complaint was 4th and 1, and then passing...right decision to go for it, but you have a pro-bowl LT and a decent RB...if you can't get 1 yard in that situation, then you have no business moving on...

...there were other decisions that were not terrific (like the 3:1 pass,/run ratio), but we were in the game...

Wasn't it earlier in the year that everyone was complaining that they didn't go to Dez on the goalline when in one on one coverage? Now they have one on one and they go to Dez and everyone complains because it was obvious? Can't have it both ways. I have no issue with going to Dez anytime he has one on one, regardless of where we are on the field, what down or anything else. It should be automatic call. I didn't like the throw, I would prefer they throw it up and let him go get it over the DB, but the call to throw Dez was not the issue.
