The one time the gambler didn’t gamble

Jerry not taking Moss. My god by far the biggest miss this franchise has ever had.
Not trading for Joe Montana. The great Roger Staubach had just retired. Instead we stuck with Danny White. UGH.

Not drafting Tom Brady. In Troy Aikman's last year he could have tutored Tom Brady! Instead we went with Dwayne Goodrich, Kareem Larrimore, Michael Wiley, Mario Edwards and Orantes Grant in the draft. UGH.

The Michael Irvin effect.

The biggest miss this franchise has ever had? You do know we were in need of a HC and a QB back in 2000. Bill Belichick was hired in 2000 by the Patriots and that's the same year Tom Brady came out. Putting those two guys together was our biggest miss.

But opinions vary.
You can't be serious? Dude, if we draft Moss we aren't talking about Irvin getting hurt or Aikman on his downside. Moss literally revived the careers of Brad Johnson, Jeff George, Randall Cunningham and many more. And to say we shouldve signed Belichick and drafted Brady in 2000 is laughable. Never would have needed either with what I am sure would have been consistent 13-3ish type seasons and plenty of success.

Good point. Moss wouldn't have saved Chan Gailey or Dave Campo...
He wouldve saved Gailey. We had very good offenses with Gailey, Moss wouldve saved any OC. Look at Billick, he was known to be some amazing OC cause of Moss then became HC of Baltimore only to have a terrible offense with one of the best defenses of all time. He road that D to a title.

I was PO’d.. but with Jerry, not surprised. That was just another ridiculous decision to add to the pile.

It is what it is. Ruminating on that gaff by Jerry is yesterday's news.

But.....

Imagine Irvin and Moss on the field together. With Emmitt in the backfield. Regardless of the comment above about Aikman losing the touch on the long ball, which isn't accurate, this foursome would have scared the crap out of a statue of Vince Lombardi.

Now back to reality. Jerry has wanted to be known as a football guy for almost three decades. That label will never fit him, and from here on out, even if he were to assemble a championship team, the 26 year drought for one of the most elite franchises in the world, not just the NFL, means Jerry will always be the ultimate Madden player. Instead of a controller in hand, he has a checkbook.

Yet, if Jerry had pulled the trigger on Moss, there is a strong possibility the elusive Super Bowl Victory he has always wanted, orchestrated by the Ego from Little Rock, would have actually put him on the football map.

We, as fans, can point to umpteen different blunders Jerry has made. And one might make the case several of them could have been the right move at the right time to attain his goal.

But the Moss Mistake ripped victory out of the hands of Jethro, and forever sealed his fate as being the man who killed the success, the lore, the infamy built by Tom and Jimmy.

Didn't we pass on Joe Montana in the draft too? I see he went the pick right after we took Doug Cosbie.

I also saw that we passed on Walter Payton for Randy White in 1975. But at least Randy went on to have a HOF career.

I don't play OLB Ellis was a steady player, but Moss was another JJ special. Meanwhile, JJ brought headcase Alonzo Spellman to the team and thought Moss was crazy.

And followed Spellman up with Demetrius Underwood.

My opinion is my opinion alone. I don't need you to agree with it. So are you seriously trying to talk me out of my very own opinion. Seriously?
:lmao:

Aikman and Irvin didn't like Gailey's scheme...

Jerry not taking Moss. Yeah, it popped up in my YouTube videos that thanksgiving day game. My god by far the biggest miss this franchise has ever had. Coulda revitalized the triplets who still had plenty of juice left in 98 and 99. What a shame. FYI Moss had 4 catches that came and he ended up in the end zone on all of them.

A side note I think we all got robbed of what would have been one of the best Super Bowls ever Denver Minnesota in 98.

:hammer:

I wasn't even a Vikings fan, but I was so mad at them at ruining what would have been a great Super Bowl.
I think the second almost Super Bowl matchup I would have liked to have seen was the 85 Bears against the Dolphins in a rematch. That would have been a great one too. Instead, we got the Patsies (well, back then they were.)

Bill B is a terrific coach ( D coach) but he lucked into Tom Brady and the combo won 6 SBs, let him prove he can win Post season consistently without TB . Also Bill wants full control of the team , Jerry will never give that , so it is a pipe dream.

In 1979 the Dallas Cowboys management did something they had never done before in the draft. They went against the information given to them by their computer. The Cowboys had always drafted the best available player despite their current strength at that position.

When the 3rd round came the best available player was a quarterback. The Cowboys felt completely satisfied with Roger Staubach, Danny White and Glen Carano, their 2nd round pick in the 1977 draft. Little did they know that Roger Staubach would retire at the end of 1979 due to excessive concussions.

At the same time, they had just lost their 3rd team TE, Todd Christiansen, due to a contract dispute with Tex Schram. Todd would go on to a great Pro Bowl career with the Raiders but that's another story.

Anyway, the Cowboys management of Tex Schram, Gil Brandt, and Tom Landry decided to take a TE, so they passed up the QB that the computer said was the best choice and they took Doug Cosbie.

Two picks later the 49ers took the quarterback.....Joe Montana.

Ironically, that was the only time that the previous GM took a gamble.

Moss came around too late; the team had deteriorated to the point where we had no chance at winning another SB

Lets be blunt people: we barely hung on to beat the Stealers due to ODonnels picks. Take them out and we lose. and that was three years earlier- the team had gone way downhill since then

Gill Brandt has talked about how stupid he felt later for not going after Mike Singletary because he was one half inch shorter than their standard for that position

Every team screws the pooch now and then. Now in 1979 they had to know Roger was going to retire soon; but Tom thought Danny White would do fine. And just like with Tom Brady no one thought Joe Montana would become a HOF.

I am 100% with you on the side note. It was very disappointing that we didn't get that Vikings/Broncos SB.

But on your main point, they should have drafted Moss. And it is rightfully brought up as one of the biggest mistakes. But IMO there was a more obvious bigger mistake. That took place in 2005.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we didn't draft him. But at the time he was the obvious choice in the first round. Dallas had two picks in the first round. Aaron Rodgers was there on both of them. We already drafted Ware. We had an aging vet, not a franchise QB. He was a placeholder. No way they should have passed him up on the 2nd pick.

In hindsight I'm glad Tony Romo emerged. The only time Tony and Aaron had similar talented teams, Tony won that match.
