In 1979 the Dallas Cowboys management did something they had never done before in the draft. They went against the information given to them by their computer. The Cowboys had always drafted the best available player despite their current strength at that position.
When the 3rd round came the best available player was a quarterback. The Cowboys felt completely satisfied with Roger Staubach, Danny White and Glen Carano, their 2nd round pick in the 1977 draft. Little did they know that Roger Staubach would retire at the end of 1979 due to excessive concussions.
At the same time, they had just lost their 3rd team TE, Todd Christiansen, due to a contract dispute with Tex Schram. Todd would go on to a great Pro Bowl career with the Raiders but that's another story.
Anyway, the Cowboys management of Tex Schram, Gil Brandt, and Tom Landry decided to take a TE, so they passed up the QB that the computer said was the best choice and they took Doug Cosbie.
Two picks later the 49ers took the quarterback.....Joe Montana.
Ironically, that was the only time that the previous GM took a gamble.
