I generally find the people who think everything is hunky dory when the team wins are usually the ones who think everything sucks when we lose. There's never any middle ground. That's why I think its hilarous when I get shouted down for bringing up that we're still ridiculously sloppy and undisciplined football team after a win, because most of these people who think everything is great tonight will go want to blow up the team in about a week.
I really don't know how a fan of their team could ever possibly justify or excuse being the 31st most penalized team in the NFL, but you seem to be tying yourself in knots trying.
Since you keep editing the post, please allow me to continue to respond.
I don't believe I have a history of calling you out. Personally, I consider myself a middle-ground minded fan, though maybe I fail miserably in that pursuit. I think tonight's victory was a quality win, but also the sort of win we've seen in years past (as I said earlier in the week, winning road games in November has never been tough for the Phillips/Romo-led Cowboys). But I do like the way we're winning, even if we're doing it with -- as you've shown me -- a higher-than-desired number of penalties.
My concern all season has been with the offensive penalties (pre-snap and holding, to be specific) and the stupid defensive ones (12 men on the field, for instance). So there were a few tonight that obviously had me screaming. The Brooking holding penalty, though, for example didn't bother me. Plays like that happen. I thought the Witten call was a judgment call that could have gone either way, but fully expect Witten to use that same arm push next time around. I bet that call isn't made the majority of the time.
I agree our MO has been to be an undisciplined team. I was screaming the same thing earlier this season. My general impression has just been that since that Kansas City game -- which was atrocious when it came to penalties -- there has been gradual improvement in the unforced-error penalties.
Now, I'll agree -- you've shown me we had too many penalties tonight. I wouldn't have guessed 11. I was watching at a friend's house and never had a chance to look at stats. If I watched again maybe I'd have a different outlook, but I didn't necessarily think penalties inhibited us too greatly tonight. Again, I can be wrong. Feel free to sue me if so.
But penalties aside, I like the way we're winning games, generally speaking. We rely on gritty -- and suddenly reliable -- defensive efforts and an offense that is relatively speaking turnover free. To me the turnover aspect was a HUGE part of our undisciplined play earlier this season, and it's not showing up in as many doses.
Again, I never meant to or got the impression that I had a history of calling you out, or that I'm a rollercoaster type of fan. Certainly I'm angrier after losses and happier after wins, but I'm not ready to call it a season or order Super Bowl tickets this time of year.
