If we’ve learned anything in the last three decades about the Jones family running the Dallas Cowboys it is this: The hype machine never stops grinding and the sales booth is always open. Despite three decades of under-performing when it matters most on the field, the shameless marketing of “America’s Team” never takes a break.

Here we are in June, a month away from training camp and we are already being PR-pummeled with the sales pitch that a first time head coach the Jones boys call “Schotty” is “turning this thing around” with his backward visor while forging “bromances” with every single player. I want Schotty to win but please…

Let me make it clear: I will be thrilled if this team is really good this year. My problem is acting like they’ve already done something before they’ve even put on the pads. The only hype I will buy from this organization will be on the scoreboard in games that matter.

For those of you buying in right now I completely support your enthusiasm and your right to express it on this forum. If you are excited by what you see and hear now, I support your enthusiasm.

Conversely, I hope that my reluctance to buy before I’ve seen results will also be seen as my right. “I will believe it when it happens” has not only been my mantra for years, it is my way of saying I love the Cowboys without buying what our shameless owner and his entitled son are selling.

The only hype these days I’m buying will be results…on the field…in games that matter.

Well said as always Bob!

I do not see it as fans buying into any hype. More like they are liking the changes that have taken place.
Some will take is as a positive sign, and say so. Others will keep to their everything sucks attitude and say so.

Fans know we need to see it on the field. That is a given. Yes there are some extremes on both pros and cons to it. But most know, show us, not just say it.

But if one acts a bit positive, does not mean they are buying the hype.
I stated many times, I do not expect miracles. And have us on the verge of a playoff spot. But that does not curb my enthusiasm going into the season at this point.

With Dallas unlike most sports teams, its all about finding the coach that can overcome the Jones boys. Its been 30+ years. So we can only hope Brian is that guy. For me, I see him as a fresh start with a young team. And I hope the offense moving out of the 1990's isn't just lip service. If he gets them to play hard AND actually puts players in positions to succeed thats a great combo. We'll see.

Just a reminder - Dan Cambell did the same "culture" routine. Lots of talk and hype. He almost got fired mid way through his 2nd year, until they finally turned it around. If the results are culture based, like what is being sold right now, it's going to take time......if it can even be done with the family that owns the team.

Is there a button for adding 1,000 Likes?

Hope does spring eternal. Positive outlook is healthy. But so is being somewhat realistic. There's a lot of jibber jabber about how much we have improved this off season. Some are SUPER impressed.

Well...in brutal honesty...we haven't done sh....squat...yet.

In the meantime, I'll be cheering them on every bit as hard as anyone else.

As I said in the OP, I support any fan’s right to express however they feel about this team. I like what you said about the difference in buying hype and just being positive about the changes.

I have no problem with any of that. I’m just withholding my unbridled enthusiasm until I see something good that matters. And that will involve a scoreboard.

Agree 100% Bob. At worst, we are at least getting a fresh plate of poo, vs the same old crusty poo. Anything is a huge improvement over last spring/summer's team activities. I really hope we are seeing something better on the field this season.
I rarely approve of "change for the sake of change". But JG and this one have my blessing. :)

"Lol, you’re more optimistic than I am. The funny thing is, it doesn’t even bother me anymore. I don’t buy into the hype, so there’s no real disappointment—at least not in a way that sticks with me after a loss. I’ve come to expect failure, and honestly, a lot of it is pretty comical when you think about it. All you have to do is look at the last three playoff losses, they're the perfect example."

The thing is we've seen this act before....many times. I think cautious enthusiasm is prudent.

I also support fans right to fan as they see fit. The judging of each other about it is 99% of "problems" we have here. We should be able to talk about our disagreements with(out) making an embarrassing spectacle of ourselves.

I hear and agree!! Losses used to make me sick to my stomach years ago, now I take it as a joke. We don't seem to lose my playing a hard fought game, something dumb silly or weird always seems to happen in our losing

Bravo. Agree 100%.

Everyone has their right ..... to be a HATER!!!!

Just kidding. I'm where you are at this point: Show me this "culture change" brings real results. That will or won't be seen until the season is well underway so there'll be months more of rah, rah to come from the Joneses and players "buying in" before they get hit in the mouth on the field.

Off-season moves always seem to be embellished whether that's due to hype or inaction does not matter.

Even when your team signs the head coach you wanted, the big star players you wanted, etc. it still comes down to how they perform during the season.

For me, the real tell is how the players respond when the team hits one long rough patch or a second rough patch at some point.

Do they turn on other players? Do they turn on the coach? Do they show lack of caring? Any of those will invalidate the off-season moves while leading to yet another reset next off-season.

The Cowboys fan in me roots for the team regardless of whose playing or coaching. I may not like the coach or some of the players, but I hope they have great games and win every week.

That said, the older fan in me goes into each season a lot more skeptical than when I was younger.

The idea of Brian Schottenheimer coming in and establishing a real culture like you see with other teams is encouraging and I remember watching his father's teams play back in the day and do quite well (minus the bad luck he had with kickers) so there is some hope his son can find some success with the Cowboys.

I would love to have Brian create an environment in Dallas like Campbell has in Detroit, but it takes a lot more than words, laser tag and being friends with players for that to happen.

After 30 years of failed seasons, I have grown a lot more numb to the Cowboys wins and losses.

It would be great if they could get back to the Super Bowl and re-establish those high expectations and goals they had back in the 1990s.

Gotta take this time of year with a grain of salt. Look at it this way….every time someone makes a play, it’s also one of our guys that gave it up. It’s even at the end of every day.

I don’t think things have been overhyped at all.

Maybe it’s just me…but I won’t become irritated over it until the camp opening PC when Jerry and son get up there with their smug ‘cat who ate the canary’ attitudes…..as if they’ve done anything besides fail.

There’s a lot to be into checking out about this team, or they can be viewed as questions. I’m watching either way, and it ain’t because of the Jerry hype act.

I’m where I’m at every year

This team will probably win 12-14 games and then lose the first playoff game

Idc about the giants or Washington….dont care Washington’s first team squad lost to our 2nd and 3rd stringers and took a game winning td to beat our 3rd and 4th stringers so I’m pretty sure we either go 3-3 in the division or 4-2

Idc about the giants…

Hear hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not being negative to not believe in Jerry and Stephanie's product when they refuse to let experts build the team.
