A friend of mine brought over a bootleg copy of True Grit a couple of weeks ago. I have no CLUE how they can say it's not a remake of the original?

Granted, there are subtle differences, but scene-for-scene, it was the EXACT same movie.

Case in point. The character of Col. G. Stonehill in the original is played by the venerable character actor, Strother Martin. If you don't know who Strother Martin is/was, well, all I can say is, "What we've got here is, failure to communicate."

The actor that plays the part in this "remake", Dakin Matthews, so mimics Martin's performance and looks so much like him, I had to pause the DVD and search IMDB just to be sure I wasn't watching some CGI mutation-thingy.

It's not that I didn't like the movie, or was all bent out of shape that it was redone, more so just surprised it's getting the accolades it is.

Out of the movies I saw, 127 Hours kicks their ***. (The Fighter, Inception, Toy Story 3, True Grit, 127 hours). I need to catch the other ones though...

Heard black swan is mentally disturbing which makes me hesitant.
the kings speech/kids are all right are probably out of my sophistication level.
i cringe that they made a movie about facebook.
never heard of Winter's Bone.

so i think the oscar will go to facebook movie

Bah. "The Kids are All Right" got tremendous reviews when it came out, as good as or better than many of the other nominees.
Bah, just don't agree at all.

King's Speech is definitely not out of anyone's sophistication level. It's just a good movie. Kids are all right isn't sophisticated either. If you followed Inception relatively well, no reason you shouldn't be able to follow either of those.

The most "sophisticated" movie is probably Winter's Bone, a movie about meth producers and patriarchal society in the Ozarks. It's a great movie though, my favorite of the year.

Black Swan is intense, I'll leave it at that.

You people who didn't vote for The Black Swan are out of your flippin' minds. Best Oscar nominee in years! ;)
