And that brings up a very interesting scenario with him.

High ankle sprains can linger.

If he is not ready in three weeks, it comes down to either keeping him on the active roster, placing on IR, or just cutting.

We will already have to carry DeMarcus Lawrence.

Good point. I think they keep him on the active roster and that's really an indictment of the state of the line.

The bigger issue is his ability to play at all, given his mental state and the commissioner's pending ruling.

A one-tech, playing limited snaps, is going to be able to give you reps even after a year and change off. He'll have his share of emotional baggage to overcome, but he's not also overcoming a serious injury, which is what you normally see with this much time off. He's just got to get in legitimate playing shape in terms of his stamina (assuming he was able to keep his strength up during his time served, which is not really a huge assumption). He's been training for the last month already, and will have been doing so for a couple of months before we'd be counting on him for any snaps. I don't think the time off is going to be the significant issue here with Brent.

Hopefully you're right because the Golden Cock needs take some time off for the team's sake. Not since '89 were we this bad at the DT position.

I have zero problem with a man paying his due and having the chance to go on with picking up the pieces of his shattered life.
I've many close friends who never got that chance and it's was so very detrimental to them becoming a productive citizen.

Now- sorry for the temporary derail, but I can see him being ready sooner than some may think.
I can see him being very ready to fill his life with football rather than tragedy and regret that surely fills his mind in some capacity every day.

I wish him the best and hope to see him become an inspiration for anybody who's made a serious mistake that they can do penance then go back to being a someone, not a pariah.

I do not think we can afford to carry both him and Lawrence on the active roster as injured players.

I put him on IR or cut him and don't think twice about it if it comes down to it at the final cuts.

I think he was just out long enough, and just not quite good enough, to justify waiting on his return last season, so they IR'd him.

Other than the stupid jokes at his expense, he's been quiet this camp. Has anybody who's been there had anything to say about him that we haven't heard yet?

So T. McClain has not only made the team, but is a starter, inspite of not praticing yet. That is part of the problem here, no competition and jobs are handed out without earning it.

May the best man win!

What drove you to that conclusion?

We need him to be better than Hayden. He is key to this defense being better, more than any other guy. I base this on seeing the 1st preseason game and how bad Hayden sucked

Just about everyone on this board has penciled him in as the starter. I'm not sure he's any better than Hayden.

I'm not sure that's true. I expect him to be better, but that's a far cry from making the team and being named the starter without more participation in camp.

Terrell McClain's health does not concern me more than any other. I was not counting on him to do much in the first place.

I know the thing around here was that he was automatically the NT over Hayden, why I have no idea.

Everyone saw more upside to Terrell than Hayden. High ankle sprains will be hard to deal with until he is 100% recovered or until the off season.

Expectations need to be tempered for Mcclain, he was non-tendered and hasn't played much football in a long time... Jay Ratliff played more snaps than him last year and he missed 3/4 of the season...

Terrell McClain was active for 16 games last season.

I remember all the defensive apologists saying not to get worked up over the first preseason game because none of our "projected starters" played, as if the Week 1 roster will look anything different.

49ers, say hello to:

Mincey - Coleman - Hayden - Crawford

You don't have to be an apologist to remind people not to read much into preseason football.

We already knew this defense wasn't going to be very good on opening week.

Yeah I know Mcclain was active the whole season last year was referring to snap counts the last couple of years... Very limited sample sizes because he didn't play much at all

My first post was poorly worded I meant Jay Ratliff missed 3/4 of the season and still played more snaps than Mcclain.
