...I've been saying for a long time that the most natural successor to Parcells when he steps down would be Charlie Weis, if, and that's a big IF, he would be interested after 3 or so seasons at ND.
Well, the connection between the two keeps popping up. Today JFE mentioned in her radio show that Parcells threw her a nugget of info yesterday and said to her, "Guess who called me Friday night?" She said, "Who?" And Parcells responded, "Charlie Weis." Seems as if Charlie was picking Tuna's brain as to how he would approach his team in the pre-game talk and prep Saturday before the big game with SC.
Then tonight on Stephen Smith's show on ESPN, Weis was talking about the game and Smith asked Weis if, even though he lost, since he was now a head coach, if the game against SC was the greatest game he had been involved in as a coach. Weis dismissed that and said No, he would pick any of the 4 Super Bowls he was a part of winning over a game he lost. He then added this comment..."As Parcells says, 'they don't give out medals for trying.'"
I'm telling you guys and gals, keep an eye on Weis. I know right now it looks like he is completely at home at ND, but if and I believe, WHEN, he wins big at ND, I believe he is the type of coach who will want to move back up to the NFL level and be a head coach at the highest level of competition and compete for Super Bowl titles and Lombardi trophies.
I also believe that if Parcells hangs around another couple of years after this year and with his connection to Weis, Weis could be the guy Parcells eventually recommends to Jerry.
As I've said before...with "Tuna, Jr." it would be an absolutely seamless transition.
