Answer: Jerry Jones deserves little to zero credit at this stage of his general manager career.I don’t “hate” Jerry Jones. But I am beyond tired of the results we get from him come playoff time. If we ever by some miracle get even a divisional playoff win under Jerry, maybe he will deserve a Pat on the back. But having three decades of playoff futility….what “credit” does he deserve?
Jones is not a player or coach etc. His job is not dependent on passing the football, blocking, formulating defensive schemes, etc.
His job is the same as every other NFL general manager who held the title: assemble the best combination of coaches and players who work together as seamlessly as possible and seriously compete for league championships. That's it.
Jones is not the only GM who is bulletproof as far as not meeting the requirements of his job. New Orleans' Mickey Loomis is another example of a football executive with job security so tight (courtesy of Saints owner Gayle Benson) that his performance does not jeopardize his continued employment.
However, both gentlemen are exceptions to the employment scrutiny faced by not only their peers at the position but employees everywhere. Outliers like these should not only be criticized. They should be criticized heavily up-and-until they either: a) finally get it right; or b) no longer hold the GM title and execute its responsibilities.
The level of criticism is fair. Their peers and employees in general face it all the time. They should not be held as exceptions to any degree simply because they enjoy the power of being substandard at what they do and getting away with it.
