The price for Dallas Cowboys star defender is only getting higher

In his second season he flipped back inside establishing himself as one of the best guards in the league and prompting the Cowboys to pivot their plans for Smith once again. Yet for as dominant as Smith could be as a career LG, if no solution can be found at LT this year, it would be foolish to rule out Smith as a possibility. Smith might not be as good at LT as he is at guard but given the importance of the LT position it’s a move that could be justified. The entire thing would be made possible because a guy named T.J. Bass happens to be waiting in the wings.

Fans will probably remember, Bass was once considered the heir apparent to Martin at RG. The 6-foot-4, 325-pound Oregon product is one of the stronger linemen on the team. He’s been impressive in limited action and may even factor into the mix with Beebe and Hoffman. An openminded coaching staff would know if they have to move Smith to LT, they have a pretty solid option in Bass to take over at LG.

LT Smith
LG TJ Bass
C Cooper Bebee
RG Brock Hoffman
RT Tyler Guyton

Smith and Guyton outside would hold up.

Would this interior pass muster.

That couldn't be farther from truth. SF, with similar injuries, picks just in front of Dallas...just go back to one's 30 year calendar. You a fullbright scholar...or just fear mongering?.
SF’s demise is the result of a series of poor decisions. No different than the Cowboys. The ability to draft well in the past means nothing unless those good picks are currently on the team and producing. The 49ers trading 1st round picks to move up to select Trey Lance was foolish. The picks they gave up are guys not on their roster producing today.

The Present: Things became uneven from there, having mostly silenced a future Hall of Famer in Cleveland, that game showing what Guyton can be at this level. The former Sooner would struggle against both penalties and injury over the remainder of the season, and found himself constantly working to reacquire the starting role from Chuma Edoga after having beaten the veteran for the starting spot in training camp. This offseason will serve as a much-needed reset for Guyton physically, as he takes lessons learned from Year 1 — training regimen and film alike — with the understanding that it's his show now at left tackle, and unequivocally.

The Future: The 2025 season will need to serve as a coming out party for Guyton, particularly with Edoga departing for the Giants in free agency and, at this moment, no veterans having been signed to replace him. Refining his technique and potentially bulking up a bit might serve the former first-round pick well in Year 2, as would blending any added muscle with his already elite footwork while working on, and trusting, his hand technique and placement. The tools are there, the time is now, and Guyton will be placed under an even brighter spotlight this time around — one he's not entirely unaccustomed to standing under as a former player in the Big 12 — although this specific light has been known to cause extreme sunburn for anyone unprepared for it. The Cowboys need Guyton to blossom … Sooner … than later … and believe he's up to that task.

Here is the season for Dak Prescott...own up Guyton and show old fashioned pride in protecting 'your' man!
Have to agree with you again
Elliot got hurt was never able to come back the same
So I stand corrected

That wasn't the rumor meal for three previous seasons. All in support of non-reasons and failure...

Is this a hypothetical question?
Only if mis-directed.

Presented was use of logic to project use and why.

Don't bring up a 30 year calendar or deny observing applied English.

Myself, I don't have problems with stereotypes instead of projecting reasonable directions or continued opportunities that remain on the table.

I certainly don't every off season blame Jerry and not even be honest about roster and the draft is still in the future.

The question was too tough to acknowledge or comment about?:muttley:

Don't talk crap you wouldn't respond to...and don't.

Now, get real. Here you go ... One of these potential strengths was in the secondary, where defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer was brought in to team up with secondary coach Al Harris. This duo’s expertise in coaching defensive backfields paired with the excitement of potentially having DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs together for a full season for the first time, along with veteran Jourdan Lewis and a deep safety group, made the Cowboys secondary a group to expect big things from.

How much has changed in a top shelf secondary with the loss of Al Harris and the injuries carried through last season?

Cornerback

2024 Additions: Andrew Booth Jr., Caelen Carson

2024 Losses: Nahshon Wright, Noah Igbinoghene, Stephon Gilmore

2025 Additions: Kaiir Elam

2025 Losses: Jourdan Lewis

The Cowboys defenses that Eberflus was a part of in the past always had a knack for getting a lot out of a little, and through his first offseason back as defensive coordinator so far, that trend seems destined to continue at cornerback. This is a group that is going to need to rely on the overall structure of their coverage schemes, getting linebackers and safeties involved as well, to not give up big plays or get caught in single man coverage too often. A year two leap from Carson who took his lumps as a rookie is probably the most promising and tangible thing to look for when it comes to the Cowboys being surprisingly better off than expected at CB, but the need is still there for at worst one more starting-caliber player in late free agency or the draft.

Considering the Cowboys have done well to at least add some outside players to the depth chart at a wide variety of positions, the spots they haven’t touched could be more telling than usual towards their draft plans. They also could be positions they truly just “like their guys” for old time’s sake. Which category safety falls into will be interesting to watch for a franchise that hasn’t drafted one higher than the sixth round since 2021. Their last top 100 pick spent on a safety was over two decades ago with Roy Williams in 2002.

Even with Eberflus’ experience as a former coach in Dallas standing out over the newness of the rest of the staff, one that’s wasted no time digging into finding players that can help this team move forward quickly, the Cowboys DC will have his hands full trying to convince the front office that safety needs to be prioritized over much more pressing needs right now. It is much more likely to be targeted in the draft once Dallas is concerned about both current roster depth and the replacement of future expiring contracts. Wilson and Mukuamu will both be unrestricted free agents next offseason, and Thomas will be a RFA.

The time is quickly coming for safety to be a more dire need for the Cowboys, and not having a dominant group here under Zimmer is far from the top of the list of things that caused their regression in 2024. This is a position group with something of a clean start under new coaching and a new scheme to attack in 2025.
