The price for Dallas Cowboys star defender is only getting higher

In his second season he flipped back inside establishing himself as one of the best guards in the league and prompting the Cowboys to pivot their plans for Smith once again. Yet for as dominant as Smith could be as a career LG, if no solution can be found at LT this year, it would be foolish to rule out Smith as a possibility. Smith might not be as good at LT as he is at guard but given the importance of the LT position it’s a move that could be justified. The entire thing would be made possible because a guy named T.J. Bass happens to be waiting in the wings.

Fans will probably remember, Bass was once considered the heir apparent to Martin at RG. The 6-foot-4, 325-pound Oregon product is one of the stronger linemen on the team. He’s been impressive in limited action and may even factor into the mix with Beebe and Hoffman. An openminded coaching staff would know if they have to move Smith to LT, they have a pretty solid option in Bass to take over at LG.

LT Smith
LG TJ Bass
C Cooper Bebee
RG Brock Hoffman
RT Tyler Guyton

Smith and Guyton outside would hold up.

Would this interior pass muster.

That couldn't be farther from truth. SF, with similar injuries, picks just in front of Dallas...just go back to one's 30 year calendar. You a fullbright scholar...or just fear mongering?.
SF’s demise is the result of a series of poor decisions. No different than the Cowboys. The ability to draft well in the past means nothing unless those good picks are currently on the team and producing. The 49ers trading 1st round picks to move up to select Trey Lance was foolish. The picks they gave up are guys not on their roster producing today.

The Present: Things became uneven from there, having mostly silenced a future Hall of Famer in Cleveland, that game showing what Guyton can be at this level. The former Sooner would struggle against both penalties and injury over the remainder of the season, and found himself constantly working to reacquire the starting role from Chuma Edoga after having beaten the veteran for the starting spot in training camp. This offseason will serve as a much-needed reset for Guyton physically, as he takes lessons learned from Year 1 — training regimen and film alike — with the understanding that it's his show now at left tackle, and unequivocally.

The Future: The 2025 season will need to serve as a coming out party for Guyton, particularly with Edoga departing for the Giants in free agency and, at this moment, no veterans having been signed to replace him. Refining his technique and potentially bulking up a bit might serve the former first-round pick well in Year 2, as would blending any added muscle with his already elite footwork while working on, and trusting, his hand technique and placement. The tools are there, the time is now, and Guyton will be placed under an even brighter spotlight this time around — one he's not entirely unaccustomed to standing under as a former player in the Big 12 — although this specific light has been known to cause extreme sunburn for anyone unprepared for it. The Cowboys need Guyton to blossom … Sooner … than later … and believe he's up to that task.

Here is the season for Dak Prescott...own up Guyton and show old fashioned pride in protecting 'your' man!
Have to agree with you again
Elliot got hurt was never able to come back the same
So I stand corrected

That wasn't the rumor meal for three previous seasons. All in support of non-reasons and failure...

Is this a hypothetical question?
Only if mis-directed.

Presented was use of logic to project use and why.

Don't bring up a 30 year calendar or deny observing applied English.

Myself, I don't have problems with stereotypes instead of projecting reasonable directions or continued opportunities that remain on the table.

I certainly don't every off season blame Jerry and not even be honest about roster and the draft is still in the future.

The question was too tough to acknowledge or comment about?:muttley:

Don't talk crap you wouldn't respond to...and don't.

Now, get real. Here you go ... One of these potential strengths was in the secondary, where defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer was brought in to team up with secondary coach Al Harris. This duo’s expertise in coaching defensive backfields paired with the excitement of potentially having DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs together for a full season for the first time, along with veteran Jourdan Lewis and a deep safety group, made the Cowboys secondary a group to expect big things from.

How much has changed in a top shelf secondary with the loss of Al Harris and the injuries carried through last season?

Cornerback

2024 Additions: Andrew Booth Jr., Caelen Carson

2024 Losses: Nahshon Wright, Noah Igbinoghene, Stephon Gilmore

2025 Additions: Kaiir Elam

2025 Losses: Jourdan Lewis

The Cowboys defenses that Eberflus was a part of in the past always had a knack for getting a lot out of a little, and through his first offseason back as defensive coordinator so far, that trend seems destined to continue at cornerback. This is a group that is going to need to rely on the overall structure of their coverage schemes, getting linebackers and safeties involved as well, to not give up big plays or get caught in single man coverage too often. A year two leap from Carson who took his lumps as a rookie is probably the most promising and tangible thing to look for when it comes to the Cowboys being surprisingly better off than expected at CB, but the need is still there for at worst one more starting-caliber player in late free agency or the draft.

Considering the Cowboys have done well to at least add some outside players to the depth chart at a wide variety of positions, the spots they haven’t touched could be more telling than usual towards their draft plans. They also could be positions they truly just “like their guys” for old time’s sake. Which category safety falls into will be interesting to watch for a franchise that hasn’t drafted one higher than the sixth round since 2021. Their last top 100 pick spent on a safety was over two decades ago with Roy Williams in 2002.

Even with Eberflus’ experience as a former coach in Dallas standing out over the newness of the rest of the staff, one that’s wasted no time digging into finding players that can help this team move forward quickly, the Cowboys DC will have his hands full trying to convince the front office that safety needs to be prioritized over much more pressing needs right now. It is much more likely to be targeted in the draft once Dallas is concerned about both current roster depth and the replacement of future expiring contracts. Wilson and Mukuamu will both be unrestricted free agents next offseason, and Thomas will be a RFA.

The time is quickly coming for safety to be a more dire need for the Cowboys, and not having a dominant group here under Zimmer is far from the top of the list of things that caused their regression in 2024. This is a position group with something of a clean start under new coaching and a new scheme to attack in 2025.

Let's just make the NFL what the NBA is and let the 'rooks' paid in college and come in thinking they are the world and fully entitled to being millionaires...

All a boss has to provide is fairness and opportunity to earn one's own way. It is not instead a matter of just doing one's thing when he is employed. Jerry couldn't trust Jimmy Johnson when he attempted to disregard the owner. As a team, it already was effective at top levels. He was still an employee of someone who fought valiantly to bring up the wasted Cowboy franchise. Ethics and morales were fully involved. Jimmy abandoned his team for his own ego and flagrantly went there seeking another job when his team was preparing to win a Lombardi.

Did someone mention Parsons here...? No LT.

There are 7 top dogs to measure against and strongly project to starting from the beginning.

dude they're not waiting on purpose

but don't say you know better because unless you are privy to the phone calls and IN meetings, you don't know anything...
OK Jerry just admitted they basically are waiting and in no hurry.

I don't know anything??? It doesn't take a genius to understand how waiting hurts the team. You don't have be on phone calls or in meetings. Please.

For that reason it is suggested to tuck tail and kiss butt to an agent when Jerry still pays the checks...oh.

Outlaw C sections for women...oh, they already do that. Go figure now...Turkey jails journalists.

Juanyeh Thomas

The Future: What might this mean for Thomas' future, though? He entered this offseason as an exclusive rights free agent whose option was picked up by the Cowboys and that's a very, very wise decision by the front office. Thomas is simply becoming too valuable to let walk, and he hasn't even reached his peak potential as of yet. How he'll be utilized by Matt Eberflus will be something to watch, his skillset creating an opportunity to possibly be used at times at nickel corner, the spot vacated by Jourdan Lewis in free agency (after all, he is No. 2 now, for now), and then there's the fact that Thomas could be viewed as the future at safety in the eventual post-Malik Hooker era, and that means he'll need more playing time sooner than later to help make that case.

What do you think about him, now...?

Just because you're saying enough doesn't make it true they're not waiting on purpose I said on purpose the negotiations are being held up from the agent and the player so it's still not on Jerry in my opinion and they aren't in a hurry and how is it hurting the team his number was gonna be about the same no matter what he's already under contract for this year they already have money right now and they can bring in free agents after the draft regardless of this contract as long as he's signed where it's not a distraction in the regular season where he holds out it does not hurt the team so you can keep saying it and I'm gonna keep telling you that this is on the agent and player board that is on Jerry because Parson said he would do a team friendly deal he did not need to be the highest paid skilled player in the NFL and now he's backtracked and it's holding up negotiations there's no reason to go to the agent right now and there is no hurry if they can't come to a compromise.

I said they're not waiting on purpose him saying he's in no hurry I I heard the interview he just met there was no deadline they're not up against any kind of pressure you know like if they didn't have options he's on a contract right now he can be traded he can be signed there's all kinds of options the only player we've had in recent history that we couldn't do that with was Prescott he had a no trade clause no franchise tag clause and he was due to be a free agent so they paid him guess what at least he didn't even hold out with lamb threatening to hold out Parsons these are selfish players you can blame Jerry all you want I'm not a Jerry fan but I'm a fan of common sense and again I used the word on purpose he's not doing it on purpose there's good reason for it and he doesn't owe us an explanation we're not entitled to anything big dog...

You all think you all own this team this is not the Packers and even that fan base who are allegedly stockholders in the ownership group they don't get to make decisions nobody's on our timetable there's no game for five months and again as long as this doesn't run into the season and Parsons holds out and it becomes a distraction it is not hurting the team at the moment at the moment he's not doing anything on purpose i'm sorry if it hurts your feelings that they're not on our timetable..

The deal will get done the deal is gonna be anywhere from 39 to 42 million from the beginning of these negotiations that hasn't changed we'll see where it lands and we'll have a real discussion 'cause right now we're debating things we don't really know I heard the interviews I read stuff but it's not in perfect context because you're assuming what he meant and I'm assuming what I feel he meant he wasn't being nonchalant about it he wasn't being braggadocious or rude to the agent he literally was just saying at this moment there's no hurry..

Jerry fired Jimmy Johnson on courtesy to the boss.

Veteran Chuma Edoga has left in free agency, leaving Asim Richards as the leading in-house candidate for the swing tackle job. But Richards has always been considered better suited for the interior line, while Waletzko is a prototypical tackle prospect. If Waletzko can finally play the part as well as he looks it, he could rise in that discussion.

If a strong OT candidate is available early, even in the first round, the Cowboys could justifiably take him as immediate depth and for competition, with an eye on probably replacing Steele in 2026.

dude they're not waiting on purpose MP and his agents are part of the slow process and the target was 36 - 40 the whole time, that hast changed, unless MP lied about not needed to reset the market.

ironic how they can get OSA done quick and 9 other signings the last 2 days , and a great deal for both sides, this isn't always about the jones family, the agreement likely isn't in agreement with MPS take less philosophy and holding things up.

the irony is everyone blaming the jones family all the time and it's not always them. Lamb was 100% on Lamb and his agent wanting to wait for Jefferson or chase to sign, facts.. Diggs amongst other easy quiet deals..

ask yourself why chase has yet to sign and Higgins 2 years in row on FT, Aiyuk held out last year and not the only one late to sign, NYG lost SB over a few millions, not always the owner the issue, players and agents muck stuff up..

just few examples. but don't say you know better because unless you are privy to the phone calls and IN meetings, you don't know anything...
Your points do not hit target and Jerry is target on in not kissing the butt of an agent while his players is being offered league high pay. Jerry is still the boss and paying his players. Not having to include the agent beyond fair. Ask the agent then to replace the Player's Association on contracts.

Here, Jerry is following democratic law and anti-trust features to protect business and owners. Jerry doesn't have to seek a blessing by an agent. The player has that right, but he should recall that Jimmy Johnson was let go when he won a Super Bowl and also disloyal.

I that is called too much waiting, it doesn't fall on Jerry who already offered sky high value in today's NFL.

Myself, I'm not crying about doing right by one's players, for any holier than thou player...and actually does earn the money as well.
