Make no mistake, I think the guy has a real shot at winning the starting RG job, but...he just doesn't seem to have that explosiveness in his game.

I mean...have you guys seen his 40 time?

His 5.25 was better than DeCastro (5.34) and Zeitler (5.31). Kiper's 2012 Draft Report

I can't imagine Leary's time being much slower than Fredrick. I don't think the 40 is the best measure for OL.

When will Leary ever be running 40 yards down the field at full speed?

It's not the best measure for anything other than how fast you can run a 40 in a shirt and shorts that day.

Me personally, I judge my offensive linemen on how well they juggle.

The only time we have ever cared about a lineman running a 40.

If I hadn't already read his Johnny Football thread I would have thought it was sarcasm.

My absolute favorite Larry Allen play was actually in a preseason game against the Raiders. A Raider LB made the interception and Allen couldn't get the angle to tackle him so he swung his right arm like a club into the LB's chest.

The LB literally went backwards. The ref threw a flag on the play because the only way a normal human being could cause that type of movement was to grab the LB's jersey and pull him down. Allen argued the call and they showed the replay several times, Allen's hand was clearly closed into a fist and the force hitting the LB was from Allen's forearm.

It was an NFL linebacker running full speed and he went backwards. It was one of those plays you had to watch several times because it seemed to violate the laws of physics.

Uhh right now it's left guard..

Good point.

I also worry somewhat about his FG kicking. So, that's technically two problems with Leary, and we're just getting started.

5.25 is plenty good for a OG, especially one who weighs around 320 pounds.

I think if you are interested in explosiveness then you are going to be more interested in broad jump and vertical jump.

40: 5.23
BJ: 8-8
VJ: 29
BP: 30
Arm length: 34.75

DeCastro
40: 5.32
BJ: 8-2
VJ: 29.5
BP: 34
Arm length: 32.38

Kevin Zeitler
40: 5.32
BJ: 8-5
VJ: 29
BP: 32
Arm length: 32.75

Peter Konz:
40: 5.16
BP: 18
Arm length: 33

Chance Warmack
40: 5.49
BJ: 9-2
Arm length: 34.68

Jon Cooper
40: 5.06
BJ: 9-0
VJ: 27
BP: 35
Arm Length: 33

So when compared to some of the other top interior OL prospects over the past couple of years Leary arguably had as good a combine as a power player as anyone when you combine his leg drive (VJ & BJ), speed (40), power (arm length x BP).

You could argue that one of the most important measurements for an OL is arm length and Leary has the longest arms but still has great power and explosiveness.

Anyhow, you can argue all you want about the relevance of the numbers but I would say it is hard to argue Leary didn't have one of the best Combine performances and has plenty of power and explosiveness to play in the NFL. The thing that I am more concerned about with OL is intelligence and ability to process the game quickly to pickup all the different games defenses like to play upfront. His lateral agility wasn't great at about 4.91 but his arm length and strength can probably make up for some of that.

If we have to get Offensive Lineman with 4.8 speed to run down people with the ball, we're doin it wrong.

Hilarious...:lmao2:

He may not have the best long speed but he takes good angles and is a sure tackler.
