Player development. Thats the issue. Thats on the coaches.

O line- in 1993 we had 2 3rd rounders, an 8th rounder and 2 undrafted players and we won the Superbowl! Basically 3 undrafted guys in todays standards. DEVELOP WHAT YOU HAVE INSTEAD OF CONTINUING TO THROW $$—(draft pics) at the problem.

DT- think how long we have been throwing draft picks at this position. We havent hit on a complete DT in I dont know how long. Osa is a one way player. No one developed all those picks! Gallimore, Hill, Bohannon and everybody else.

Lb- we dont have many. We need to get some and develop them.

WR- we have a 1st rounder, a 2nd in Mingo, a 3rd in Tolbert, a 6, and a 7th too. DEVELOP THEM! You can still add lockett too.

RB- dowdle worked out they developed him even thru the injuries.

Look at how many young guys we have? Develop them. Jerry you have to get out of the way too. There should be one voice. Obviously that will never happen.

New coaches so it’s on them. They say they are good so show us. The answer isnt to get another LT how about you develop the first rounder we have? Our O line coach sucked last year.

I think one problem with this team is player development but it’s not the main problem. I feel the main problem is from the FO down to the practice squad, everyone has accomplished what they set out to do, which is make money. Anything that happens on the football field is just an added bonus.

Back in ‘92 when we won it with the offensive line the OP addressed and a plethora of plan B free agents our whole team wasn’t satisfied with “just being there”. They were driven to prove themselves. Jerry and Jimmy were driven to prove themselves as football guys.

Now Jerry is resting on his laurels and the rest of the team is following suit. Everyone in the organization is satisfied with what they’ve accomplished so far and there’s no drive to take it to the next level.

I have to disagree. Just because some of
Those 90’s players were drafted later doesn’t mean they weren’t good players.

The Cowboys had a ton of draft picks thanks to the Hershel walker trade and Jimmy Johnson basically inventing the draft value chart and moving picks all the time.

They found late round gems because they drafted a ton of players. So the odds of hitting went up and Jimmy Johnson was also a great talent evaluator.

We now have tweedle Dee and tweedle dum running the trades and draft picks.

Yes, player development is important. But some players just are not going to make it in the NFL no matter who the coach is.

I think you are on to something. I can think of some specific examples. When Witten was here, they drafted other TEs, like Martellus Bennett and let them rot on the vine. They did it with Schultz to a certain extent. His first two years he was invisible. Once Witten retired Schultz stepped up because he was given opportunities. They have done the same wthing with Ferguson and Schoonmaker. Why use 2nd round picks on TEs only to have them play such small roles in the game plans?

Maybe the coaches see somethings we don't see, but Bennett left Dallas and became an all-pro TE.

Coaching matters in this league. A lot! Unfortunately we have an owner who doesn't think it's worth investing into the coaching staff. And the results have shown.
Team discipline and game day effectiveness. That is preparations and recognitions.

Replace "drive" w/ "brains".

And we suck mightily at identifying late round talent, though it was better under McCarthy.

Strength and conditioning has been a major issue. This team can’t go a season without major injuries to key players.

Which segue into lack of depth is another aspect of why the collapse last year.

I'm not sure it's a big issue.

I think this assumes that other teams develop players significantly better than we do.

Looking through the draft history of the Ravens, Chiefs, & Eagles, their situations aren't super different.

Mostly, a late rd pick or an UFA pretty quickly will show that they belong in the league if they do. Think Daron Bland.

The NFL sets the standards for team activities and that includes reinforcement contact and time on carpet.

To be fair, I think we hit on our share of late round picks.

But roster composition problems center around:

1. We lack the ability to hit on late round trench players (specifically DL and front 7 are a big weakness regardless of where they're taken)
2. We do not supplement our draft failures with FA
3. Over the last 20 years we've squandered our around 75% of our 2nd rd picks

It boils down to squeezing the oranges at the right moment. Now does it depend upon Florida State power struggles or the King Ranch citrus?
