The problem with the team is player development

Just from a general observation standpoint it seems the oline picks have developed over time far more successfully than dline/front 7 picks.

Granted, the oline has been chock full of first round selections but still. All those picks developed and supported/exceeded first round selection return on investment.
Jury still out on Guyton as the exception.

Seems the opposite with the DL/LBs although far less 1st rounders have been consistently drafted.
Unfortunate draft philosophy on previously injured players with Jaylen, VanderEsch and maybe even now Overshown reveals that the thought process on selecting injured players is a poor one needing immediate change.
Micah kinda fell into their lap and Mazi proves to be an absolute bust after trying to draft for need in the 1st rd for the first time at DT in forever.

Just bad scouting of DTs/DL in general with recent Taco,Trysten Hill and now Mazi.
Need better talent evaluation period.

Back end/secondary more a mixed bag of hits and misses that I'm okay with.

Yep.......and player selection. We have the oldest GM in the league.

Agree on the OL especially. That's why I don't understand people wanting more OL, even at #12. We've put plenty into the OL lately -- we just need to get better play from "lesser", or lesser-hyped, players. I'm hoping that's one reason Adams was hired, because he got good results from non-heralded OLmen with the Cardinals.

The DL is different. We haven't even tried there. Front seven on defense and especially DT is where we need to spend those higher picks. Of course, they can't be busts like Mazi, either, but that goes without saying.

We do suck at player development, but that's way down on the list of issues. Talent is by far our biggest issue, the lack thereof.

To develop a player, he must first have the talent. Tolbert does not.
It's both. We might have talented players but not the coaching to get the most out of them. Just look at what the Eagles do with players. Zack Baun goes from special teams to All-Pro after switching positions and getting a chance. Mekhi Becton goes from 1st round bust to run game road grader at a new position. Jordan Mailata never even played football. Eagles let him develop and learn and is now considered one of the top tackles in the game, with more than a few calling him the best. Landon Dickerson was a center in college but switched to guard on draft day and is a PB player for three years in a row. Cam Jurgens was told to play guard until Kelce retired. No problem. He played, learned, and slotted right into center this year. PB player of course.

Be honest. Just look at their o-line. Would our coaching have been able to get the same results as their o-line coach?

The Cowboys have drafted well for the most part since 2011. The biggest issue is that they don’t use free agency. Can you imagine how good the 2014, 2016, 2022, and 2023 teams if the Cowboys used free agency to improve the defenses. At the very least we would have been in the NFC Championship game.

The problems with this team are many but player development isn't at the top of the list. The cowboys have a good history of drafting pro bowl talent....what they are terrible at is signing pro bowl level free agents.

Coaching matters in this league. A lot! Unfortunately we have an owner who doesn't think it's worth investing into the coaching staff. And the results have shown.

No, we are not good at player development. When you don’t have a guiding philosophy you are building a team around, you don’t even know what kind of players you are developing.

And when you lack a guiding team philosophy you also don’t know what kind of coach you need to give you that philosophy.

The only guiding philosophy this team has had the last three decades is all about two things:
  • Maximizing profits
  • Making sure JerryJones is the face of the franchise - win or lose. He is to receive all credit and no accountability for failure.

Absolutely.. Im quickly scanning my brain if there is a sport where the coaches matter more than the NFL.

Someone may prove me wrong but I cant think of one atm.

Cowboys could be starting a trend of giving huge extensions to multiple players from the same draft

The Dallas Cowboys made a splash signing on Tuesday. Sure, the player they signed was one of their own, but any thought of letting Osa Odighizuwa get away can be put to rest as they re-signed him to a four-year, $80 million deal. Not only is Odighizuwa a long-armed disrupting machine in the trenches, he’s one of the team’s most consistent performers. He’s also one of the team’s most available performers, only missing one game over his entire four-year career. Love it, like it, or whatevs, the Cowboys are keeping a good football player.

Odighizuwa’s new deal makes him the 14th highest-paid defensive tackle in the league. That’s a reasonable cost for a player of his talent, but it’s still pricey. And with a Micah Parsons extension on the horizon that will make two players from the 2021 draft class who will have gotten a big second deal with the Cowboys. That doesn’t happen too often.

You may remember in 2014, the Cowboys drafted Zack Martin in the first round and then DeMarcus Lawrence in round two. Two players, two All-Pro’s, but the Cowboys cheated a little by trading away their third-round pick to move up in the second to land Lawrence. Wise move. Both Martin and Lawrence eventually got new deals. Martin became the highest-paid guard while Tank became the second-highest paid edge rusher.

Two years later in 2016, the Cowboys scored a double whammy again in the form of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott. Everyone expected Zeke to be awesome as he was the fourth overall pick, but Dak was quite the surprise. Elliott worked a new deal making him the highest-paid running back and Prescott has since worked two new deals making him the third-highest quarterback in 2021 and the highest-paid player ever just last year.

It would be crazy to draft and keep six stars across three drafts, but it could happen. And while that two-player steak will end with the 2023 draft class, DeMarvion Overshown looked like a future star before he got hurt. The Cowboys also have some promising young players from last year’s draft class who could see second contracts later. Cooper Beebe looks legit while Marshawn Kneeland and Marist Liufau are off to a good start. And who knows. Maybe that Tyler Gutyon fella takes a step forward and suddenly he’s in the conversation. It’s early. Anything is possible

Player development. Thats the issue. Thats on the coaches.

O line- in 1993 we had 2 3rd rounders, an 8th rounder and 2 undrafted players and we won the Superbowl! Basically 3 undrafted guys in todays standards. DEVELOP WHAT YOU HAVE INSTEAD OF CONTINUING TO THROW $$—(draft pics) at the problem.

DT- think how long we have been throwing draft picks at this position. We havent hit on a complete DT in I dont know how long. Osa is a one way player. No one developed all those picks! Gallimore, Hill, Bohannon and everybody else.

Lb- we dont have many. We need to get some and develop them.

WR- we have a 1st rounder, a 2nd in Mingo, a 3rd in Tolbert, a 6, and a 7th too. DEVELOP THEM! You can still add lockett too.

RB- dowdle worked out they developed him even thru the injuries.

Look at how many young guys we have? Develop them. Jerry you have to get out of the way too. There should be one voice. Obviously that will never happen.

New coaches so it’s on them. They say they are good so show us. The answer isnt to get another LT how about you develop the first rounder we have? Our O line coach sucked last year.
Ongoing real time no bias talent evaluation is the major hindrance to this team. And yes, it’s his and his son’s job to be better. When a player has limited skills-do you plan a future with them (and can you walk away from a good player that wants great money)? Answer yes, and you are just as bad at this as they are-no matter the position or jersey sales.

with Merry in charge and the circus of coaches, you are asking the impossible.

On the best offensive line for Jimmy Johnson started up, just how many of them were obviously high round picks or even previously an offensive lineman. Baptism of fire and dedication well led.

Development was easier when there was no salary cap and the coaches got to set the practice schedule at whatever intensity and time limit they wanted. Cutting players and moving on was very simple. Players did not get lifelong money in a 3 year contract.

Good players were created by analysis and guts of that player. Still is the general way now. Base levels have improved.

Problem begins and ends with the GM

I think the problem is culture. We’ve heard it from former players before. Being on the cowboys must just be tiring. It’s not for everyone. It certainly doesn’t seem like dak is a bright lights guy.

To not be a final 4 team in 30 years is beyond coincidence

So is the list if coaches and players. Just stick to your stuck calendar. So, you use make believe and cause a objective serving relevance to be ignored. That is your value, certainly not mine. Becareful now...
