After looking at the Amari Cooper trade, there are plenty of things to like and look forward to, and there are also plenty of things that cause some long term concern.

Here is a list of what I see as PROS and CONS of this trade:

THE PROS

1. Cooper is 24, is already a proven commodity as opposed to a young rookie that will take a year or two to adjust to playing in the NFL. When he stepped on the practice field the other day, he was instantly the best receiver we have.

2. He can have both an immediate impact as well as a long term impact if the Cowboys can re-sign him after 2019. Signing him to another contract is probably do-able with Cowboys current cap space.

3. Cooper is “Dak friendly” in the sense that he is known to be an excellent route runner. For a QB like Dak who does not have a canon for an arm, having WRs that run reliable routes is very helpful.

4. Cooper is known to be a person of good character. His reputation on and off the field is excellent. His character and work ethic will be an excellent role model for a young team.

THE CONS
1. The cost of the trade- losing a #1 pick for next year, despite the positives mentioned above about Cooper’s talent and young age, it’s still a risk. Next spring, when other teams are drafting first round talent and we aren’t, there may be some regrets.

2. His contract and potential free agency after 2019. This is the biggest con to me because, unlike a rookie drafted in 2019, there is no guarantee we will have him past next season. A 2019 rookie drafted is not a guarantee as far as performance, but there is a guarantee they will be here for 4-5 years at a cheaper price. What if after a year and a half of being a Cowboy, Cooper decides he wants to go to a team he feels gives him a better chance at a ring?

3. He has had some concussion issues and those type of injuries can have a cumulative effect. The next one can be career ending.

4. Cooper is clearly the best WR we have now, but is he a top 10 WR in this league? Maybe. He’s been good but he hasn’t exactly been lighting it up the last year or so. Are we sure he’s worth a long term commitment?

This list could be longer for both categories. I like Cooper’s talent, age and immediate potential here. But I also have big concerns about the fact he is not a guarantee after next season. And even if we re-sign him, will that contract become an albatross as so many big WR contracts later become?

One clear message was being sent by this owner: He expects this team to win now. This season. I hope that’s a message for this HC that if this team doesn’t make the playoffs, the pink slip follows. That would be a huge “PRO” IMO.

If it gets rid of Garrett it will be worth it.
Is JJ saying “win now or else”? I hope so. But when has Jerry ever held Garrett accountable? JJ has been more comfortable with losing than he was with making changes. I can’t see this team making the playoffs even after this trade. Will Jerry pull the plug on his personal hand picked and groomed HC?

You can never tell with Jerry. I don't think the Cooper trade is going to change much. The coaching, the QB and the OL have to increase their games. What are the odds in that? If this offense continues to only average a TD a game I don't see how he survives. On the other hand it wouldn't really surprise me if we somehow got to 8-8.

I predict Garrett is gone if we don’t get to the nfc championship game. I think even Jerry’s patience ran out with the Texans game and the Skins end of game decisions.

I hope so. Be nice for Jerry to finally see and admit what we discovered about 8 years ago, JG can’t coach

People keep bringing up draft pick. What gem will we get from next years draft that will surely put us in the Super Bowl? You know it's been 22 years, and all of the firsts we've had from then hasn't done anything for us.

We need more than draft picks to win titles and I'm not talking players.

The Cooper deal is all about winning now.

If he doesn’t prop up this passing offense what will it say about Dak?

Or will the excuses dismiss Cooper as another failing #1 receiver?

I would think this move will have more to say about Dak than anything else. Let’s hope so anyway.

Knowing our coaching situation is limited let’s hope we aren’t going to be limited at QB as well.

Losing the #1 pick definitely takes out the potential prospect of going after a QB if Dak is a flop.

Plus if we used that pick for a WR you have 5 years to develop before opening up the checkbook.

And it would be even nicer if he had a plan for what to do if/when he cuts Garrett loose. If he just replaces one sycophant with another, it will just be more of the same. News from the not-so-current-affairs desk: The hubris of Mr. Jones had been the main problem with the team’s on-field results for decades. Until that changes, it doesn’t really who matter who becomes head coach.

Honestly, they need coaches that can, you know, coach and can be less idiotic with the game on the line; they need coaches that are not castrated by their owner and can actually make a football decision on the roster and during a game....this is a tiresome game...on my way to 60 and losing 22 years to this inept owner and FO refusing to put "football people" in important positions is maddening....I am not ready for my dirt nap or anything, but I honestly have no hope that this will get any better while I am still breathing

The pursuit for a legit HC is a hopeless quest. Jerry’s ways aren’t going to allow anything more than the puppetry we’ve had.

Greater coaching isn’t an option that’s going to put us over the top. The sooner we come to grips with this the sooner we can begin looking for other solutions.

Here’s the thing. This team has drafted very well in the first round going back to 2010 with only one miss. So rather than saying those picks haven’t got us to the SB, consider how bad off this team might have been had they squandered all of those picks on declining former first rounders. This team has been far more successful in recent history in the draft than it has through trades and FAs.

There are no other solutions. Never going to have enough good players that can overcome the coaching.

Obviously we don’t know who we would have drafted or if they would’ve worked out. The one thing we do know is a 2019 draftee would have been guaranteed to be here at least 4 years at a cheaper price as opposed to Cooper’s cost. Not saying that would be better.

I do think too many people are assuming Cooper will be here after 2019. He might. But he may not. If he leaves after 2019, we just rented Cooper.

But we must keep trying since a great HC is not a logical solution with Jerry.

Can’t overcome an average to below average front office and coaching staff with a 23rd ranked QB and 29th ranked offense.

Cooper is a high risk high reward move. I don't see it as a win this year deal. At best, it's a win next year or else situation for staff and/or Dak. If the plan was to spend that #1 on a WR, it's a smart play. If Dak doesn't improve, 2020 will be finding his and Garrett's replacement.

I’d argue if we don’t win this year with Cooper we won’t pay him next year with 13 + million which he is due in final year of current deal.

I hope Dak isn’t a done deal and this could influence the decision but I’m concerned Jerry is already All In .
