Yesterday near the end of the first half, Minshew dropped back on consecutive plays and threw the ball away. They were the right decisions under the circumstances, but I thought you had to be out of the pocket to throw the ball away. Does dropping back a few steps take you out of the pocket? Or was that a special situation where you can just throw the ball away? I remember the 2007 playoff game against NYG where Romo was called for intentional grounding late in the game when he did the same thing. Someone please explain the QB pocket and when is grounding supposed to be called. Thanks in advance.
1st one: QB back-peddled at an angle out of the pocket.

2nd one: Over a receivers head. Receiver at the sideline.

3rd one: Over a receivers head. Receiver at the sideline.

I need to watch again, but like the op I remember one where there was no wr in area. And he was under pressure.

Of the 3 in a row, he was definitely out of the pocket on the 1st one. On the other 2 there was a WR in the area. If the question is not about the 3 in a row then I didn't review other throwaways if he had any.

Well, he threw it out of bounds each time, not to or near any receiver I could see. Each pass definitely passed the line of scrimmage, though. Does anyone remember the 2007 playoff game where Romo was flagged? I swear it was the same situation, but it was a long time ago so maybe my memory is off.

I remember the play. I think Romo threw it left side out of bounds. Got flagged.

I do recall the plays and thought it was smart. Yes... he threw the ball to the sideline but a receiver was near.
Yep, it’s like we’ve seen a million times where the QB air mails the ball out of the back of the end zone. There just has to be a receiver in the general area.

You have to be outside of either OT
to throw it away
