Spears and Canty are both underachieving this year against the pass and the run. Ratliff and Hatcher are making more plays. Spears actually looks lethargic and heavy to me.

But let's remember that they are both only in their 2nd years...after getting some playing time out of them last year, maybe we expected too much this year. I'm still hoping they'll get it going and gradually get better in their careers.

It seems to me that Spears gets pushed around more than he should, and today I kept seeing our DL men getting stymied at the line and then actually knocked down by OL men. Just one of those days, I guess.

and the people that complain about their lack of pass rush skills need to realize 1) Canty was never a pass rusher in college and 2) both Spears and Canty are uusally off the field in obvious passing situations anyway...

I have no problem with their lack of pass rush, though I'm surprised RAtliff and Hatcher bring more of it than Spears...I just don't see either guy making many plays against the run either. I think parcells has commented on wishing they'd both step it up a bit...but again, they're still young and shouldn't be judged when they are both starting at difficult positions in their 2nd seasons and going against older, more experienced and probably stronger OL.

This board was up in arms about it too. Most in here couldn't believe we would give up AB for a "malcontent bust" like Larry Johnson. Actually the archives are hilarious on this issue.

However, after watching yet another game where Marcus Spears was a no-show and with Julius dropping off, is it starting to look like we didn't make out on the trade very well?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a HUGE Cowboys fan and I like Julius and keep hoping that Spears will show up, but I'm starting to wonder if we might not be an even BETTER team had we not just stayed pat and selected Jackson.

Not trying to get anyone riled, but I do have visions of Romo/Owens/Witten/Crayton/Barber/Glenn and Jackson running through my head.

Why must we live in the past?

What's done is done. Support who we have now. Is it really that hard?

Spears will NEVER be a great pass rusher. But there is a reason that we have an excellent run defense.

wow your acctually alot smarter than all those who think that Spears has done nothing.

Take notice that we have a near dominant run defense i promise you its not because of our linebackers its because we have big, strong, defensive linemen who fit the mold.

And were deep!!

No more complaining because we got Barber in the 4th (huge steal)

If Spears and Canty are underachieving and Ratliff and Hatcher are making more plays, then why aren't the latter two playing with the first-team defense?

The reason they're not is because pass-rush specialists are lighter and fresher coming off the bench. They're not suppose to take the pounding and beating that monsters like Spears and Canty take defending the run.

In addition, the name of the game in the NFL is RUN DEFENSE.

You stop the run and force 3rd and long, and you have a chance to get your defense off the field, keeping them fresher and paving the way for those precious sacks because teams behind have to throw the ball.

Posters are too caught up in sexy stats like sacks. The real work is done in the trenches, and Spears and Canty do just that - stopping the run and forcing teams to throw the ball on 3rd and long.
