The Romo Test.

obviously. I feel that this is very common, people read the first post, race to respond even if there are 15 pages and their comment has basically already been addressed and/or discussed, drives me nuts

Couchscout is great! I read everything he posts. A must read. In the top 5 of posters on the Zone.

Mods...Please add a "like" button. It would clean up some threads and help eliminate redundant posts.

I was going to say that this sounds awfully familair to the "couchscout" post a few months back. Anyway, it's worth mentioning again.

In any case, I do find the Romo argument as one of the better filters out there.

I've said it before: if you have ever been in a conversation and someone starts spewing the "N" word-- the hairs on the back of your neck go up and it's like the volume goes down. You can see them talking but you no longer really listen to them fully.

That's how I feel about football fans who sput serious Romo hate. I really struggle respecting their opinion after that, though I can get past it eventually.

I'll qualify this by saying it is the extreme haters that deserve to have the filter applied. You know, the ones that remember 3-4 terrible plays (liike the ones that 100% of every QB that ever lived has made) and makes those rare plays what defines Romo....while ignoring the vast majority of his game.
But having a problem here or there with any player is no big deal.

Really? This is your litmus test for talking football with people you don't know? They aren't worth talking to unless they share your views on how good/bad Tony Romo has played during his years in Dallas?

Is there room for nuance in this?

My view is Tony is a very good QB -- he had ups and downs -- more ups than downs and overall has been a plus in the grand scheme of things.

To say that the Cowboys have been a "poor team" during Romo's tenure isn't exactly true is it?

I use the same acid-test, honestly. A take like yours I have no problem with, but any Cowboy fan I come across who thinks the team needs to make a move at QB I politely patronize, but I don't take their opinions seriously from that point forward.

If you can't recognize good QB play, you're not going to have recognized anything about that Cowboys that's sophisticated enough to be legitimately interesting. It doesn't mean those people aren't quality fans, they're just not knowledgable fans. But the knowledgable fans are the ones you can learn things from and who are fun to talk to.

Haha. Almost word for word. If I used the Romo Test here in Houston I would NEVER be able to talk football. :bang2:

That's the truth. Texan fans are among the worst. It's a shame I kind of liked the Texans until I moved into the area, now I hope they go 0-16.

That happens a lot. I've seen articles written by some of the national mediots that were taken almost entirely from posts here (mine and others). We know they troll the forums looking for material because they are too lazy to think for themselves.

I almost punched my little brother in the face as I listened to him talk the other day about Romo and Sanchez being pretty much the same. When he started saying some stuff we have all heard spouted by mediots I just changed the subject....didn't want to fight with him about it.

What does he know, anyways? He somehow became a Dolphins fan when his father, uncles, and two older brothers were all Cowboys fans!! :lmao:

Hit him once for me, too, please.

If we were still teenagers, I would!! But, as it is, I don't see him much and didn't want to get into an actual argument over how stupid he was in regards to this subject. I know he doesn't watch the Cowboys games, so he really has no clue what he is talking about and should just keep his mouth shut instead of repeating some garbage he has heard on TV.

Hit him anyway. I don't care how old he is. Tell him it was from some guy you met on a message board, though, so he won't be angry with you.

Then...kick him in the testicles for me, and tell him to start following a real team. Tell him to find a better way to be the black sheep of the family. Dolphins. ***** ******.

People who do not share my views can discuss football with me. Whether the 4-3 or 3-4 is better for us is an opinion. Whether this team can turn things around this year is an opinion.

Proclaiming Romo is a choke artist and is an average QB shows me you have no opinion. What you have is a television with ESPN on it.

Forgive me for not engaging a "fan" who cannot name half the starters on their team but can accurately gage how good of a QB Romo is.

For the record when I say "you" or a "fan" I do not mean you.

There is little in-between with Tony Romo either underappreciated or tossed far too many excuses his way... He is a good QB that when he is on rivals the best of the best. Romo has also made big mistakes in key moments. People give this guy a pass far too often when few teams rival the Cowboys in offensive talent with last year IMO the best WRs/TE combo, best RT and overall mediocre o-line and a good/serviceable situation at RB. The defense wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either as there were only a handful of good defenses in the playoffs last year...

First thing I thought of

But FWIW I've been using that test for quite some time

as usual someone who is only a casual football fan you seem to be unable to realize that the TOP QBs also do that. Manning in his last SB threw a pick at the worst moment. Brady in his last two could not make the critical play when it mattered. They are also two QBs that had a much superior all around team then Tony has ever had.

So, when it comes to how Dallas fans see the Cowboys, have the Cowboys been:

A bad team with an elite QB?...

Or an average team with a good QB?...

Or a talented team with bad coaching?...

Or a talented team with an elite QB but with a meddling, undermining owner?...

Or a talented team with an overrated QB and a meddling, undermining owner?

Or an average team with a good QB and good coaching but a bad GM?...

Or a team with a good, talented offense but an average to below average defense, with average coaching?

Or a team that's talented in the skill positions but mediocre in the trenches...and with mediocre drafts?

Or a talented team with an elite QB and good coaching, but lacking leadership and toughness?

Or...hell, whatever combo you can make from the above lol...

I think I've heard/read all of the above in one form or another over the past 12 months...what description would best describe the Cowboys in the collective eyes of Dallas fans?

This.

Here's a good example of why I don't read crap like this at PFF or most other sites...a little blurb from that article:

Ben Stockwell: Simply put, this was not one of Romo’s best seasons.

You're right, Ben, it wasn't ONE of Romo's best seasons. It was his best season by far.

Idiot.
