An entire league and not one womens assistant coach?

The ratio of black NFL coaches to available positions doesnt seem to jump out in any way.

Exactly what about Latiino coaches?

There seems to be some misinformation in this thread.

The Rooney Rule covers all "minorities" not just blacks.

If we are going to talk about this subject, let's make sure we understand the basics of the rule.

I disagree.

Even if that were the case, it still gives minorities the experience of going through an interview and better prepares them for future interviews.

At some point, it pays off.

What's the point of the rule? If these black candidates were best for the job, they would most likely be getting an interview anyway.

Yes, in a perfect world the best candidate always gets the job not matter their race.

This is not a perfect world.

Without the rule, owners would only interview guys they know of. If there are no minorities in notable positions, there would be no minority interviews. No minority interviews means no minority hirings.

Of course it is ...... all types of racism ..... (even well meaning ones) ...... is stupid.

Does it bother me? No.

Do I think that a black coach in today's world needs extra help than beyond their own skills? No.

Does it make white people feel better? Probably.

Does it belittle the people it is supposed to be helping? Probably.

Is it gonna go away? No.

Again, one of the most pernicious misconceptions about programs such as Affirmative Action and The Rooney Rule, is that it only benefits African Americans.

This rule is for ALL minorities.

Explain why Black coaches have been hired and interviewed? Why are Latino coaches not asked to interview or be hired?

Now you know why it is B.S.

The Rooney Rule, established in 2003,[1] requires National Football League teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operations opportunities. The rule is named for Dan Rooney, the owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the chairman of the league's diversity committee, and is often cited as an example of affirmative action.

Since the Rooney Rule was established, several NFL franchises have hired minority head coaches (including the Steelers themselves, who hired Mike Tomlin before their 2007 season,[2] while Rooney himself contends that Tomlin's hiring did not result from the Rule).[3] At the start of the 2006 season, the overall percentage of African American coaches had jumped to 22%, up from 6% prior to the Rooney Rule.[4] Even so, the policy is still debated and no team has stated whether the Rooney Rule contributed to the hiring of a minority.

The rule does not apply if an assistant coach has language in his contract guaranteeing him the starting job in case of an opening. [5] This was the case when Mike Martz took over as head coach of the St. Louis Rams before the 2000 season. Also, the rule does not apply if the assistant coach taking over the head position is a minority, as was the case with Mike Singletary and the San Francisco 49ers in late 2008.[6]

In 2003, the NFL fined the Detroit Lions $200,000 for failure to interview minority candidates for the team's vacant head coaching job. After Marty Mornhinweg was fired, the Lions immediately hired former San Francisco 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci to replace him without interviewing any other candidates. The Lions claimed they attempted to interview other candidates but that the minority candidates withdrew from interviews, believing Mariucci's hiring was inevitable.

Recently, several legal scholars have advocated for extending the Rooney Rule to college football, where the number of minority head coaches languishes around 6%.[7]

As of June 15, 2009, Rooney Rule requirements now apply to all searches for senior football operations positions within the NFL, regardless of a team's title for that position.[8]

not saying i disagree but dont tell me this rule is geared for all minorities

the overall percentage of African American coaches had jumped to 22%, up from 6%-this is the only statistic sited pertaining to the effectiveness of said rule.

the rule does not apply if the assistant coach taking over the head position is a minority-so if you want a white assistant to take over you have to interview a minority? whats the point.

BTW there is no REVERSE racism-racism works in all directions so it is just racism.

fyi i dont care about the rule it doesnt affect me. i dont care what color coach we have if he gets the job done.

i dont know what % women positions have but im sure its way less than men and if a woman whined about it im sure there would be a similer "Christina Pagniacci rule"-its whatever

Of course the Rooney rule is racist. But since it is supposedly reverse racism its politically correct.

And anyone trying to say its not just about black coaches is a liar or a fool. No other m inority has been mentioned and clearly there was never any intention beyond black coaches.
