The secondary - let 'em all walk

It wouldn't shock me if Carr, Mo, Church and Wilcox each get deals that make us take a pass. There's a lot of really crappy secondary play in the league.

That would leave us with:
CB- Brown, Scandrick, Leon McFadden
S- Jones, Heath, Frazier

Both would need depth at least and I would think this would make CB, specifically, a priority in the draft. We'd probably need at least one vet in the CB rotation, too. I'm not sold on McFadden playing meaningful snaps. There's an argument to be made that CB would then be a higher need than DE at this point - just from sheer numbers if nothing else.

I suppose it's possible that Showers could be a player at safety, but I'd hate to think we are an injury away from relying on the former UTEP QB.

We may need to overpay somebody at CB just to avoid a catastrophe.

Carr will generate some interest. Perhaps Church. But none of those 4 players should get offered big money because they simply aren't worth it. At least 2 return to the Cowboys and maybe more.
I hope you're right, but there's a dearth of talent out there and a surplus of cap space. Worth it is a relative term that could be turned on its head this FA period.

I see Carr coming back. He's near the end of his career and has roots in Dallas. Does he really want to uproot everything for one season somewhere else? Does another team want to pony up big money for a corner who's solid but not a playmaker? I don't see it.

I think the best move for both parties is for him to stay.

Also he doesn't miss games. He deserves a lot of credit for that.

Availability is important.

Edit: the golden cock of the secondary

I think Carr is solid. I love that he never misses time and even though he isn't perfect, he competes. My fear is someone pays him a 1-year $7-8 million type deal.

Carr is going to be back. That's pretty much etched in stone. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 3 year deal honestly. A reliable corner while we majorly transition this defense. That's valuable to me.

I'm paying Mo a low base, high incentive. If he gets a better offer, then so be it.

Depends on how much Church and JJ want. If Church is asking for a good deal of money, I'd use that money to upgrade at the position instead. I'm full on the Tony Jefferson train. I think JJ probably gets a better offer in FA. We still have Heath, and Frazier is a young guy who had some potential. If Church is reasonable he'll be back. Meh.

Definitely taking a CB in the first 3 rounds. 2nd round seems to be the sweet spot. I'm leaving pretty heavily towards Awuzie at 60. I think he's going to be a good one. Then we'll have Carr/Scandrick/Brown/draft pick/Mcfadden. McFadden is only 26 and was a third round pick. That's a pretty decent lineup.

To what end? Why would a team step up and do that?

We'd be putting ourselves in a massive bind letting all of them go. I'd expect Carr and Church are back on reasonable deals, they fit here... Claiborne just can't stay healthy and Wilcox will probably get an opportunity to start somewhere with bigger money.

That's an estimate based on the lack of talent in the market. Combined with the cap space available league-wide.

That's roughly starting CB money for a non-Pro Bowl guy. Prince Amukamara got $5.5 last year. DRC made $7 million from the Giants. Heck, Brandon Flowers will make $9.1 million this year and he's arguably the same caliber of CB.

Pretty much exactly how I'd like to see us approach things, too. If we didn't hit on Brown last year, we could have been in a real pickle this offseason. As it is, we have a little wiggle room, but not all that much.

Send Carr packing. Sign Claiborne. Sign Wilcox for depth.

Sign Tony Jefferson from the 49ers.

Draft a CB.

Done.

I hope Carr is back. I missed the etching, apparently.

I hope we can keep them all, honestly, then we don't have to reach for secondary in the draft. I'm just pointing out that it's a very real possibility they all leave.

I just don't see anyone else signing him for just a year only to then have to replace him after that one year.
