I'm not sure if these links have been posted before, but if you haven't seen this documentary, it's well worth the look. At one point to Parcells it looked like Carter would develop into a quality starter while Romo was just a long shot free agent. It's pretty long, so you might prefer to steam it out to your TV.

Yes, this has been posted before but it's a good watch. Amazing how certain strings of events lead to one guy fading to obscurity and another rising to the top of the league when it seemed, at first, that those roles would be reversed. Interesting watch, for sure.

I was in Oxnard the day Quincy got cut. No social media so all of us there were trying to figure out why all the commotion before practice. There were packs of reporters mobbing coaches and suited gentleman as they walked onto the field. Pandemonium, cats and dogs living harmoniously etc.....

I was a huge Quincy fan his soph. year, I admit I thought he was going to be a star and I never even thought we would have a chance to draft him...then I started watching him less as making money became more important than having Saturdays off. I was actually rooting for us to draft him, and could not figure out why people were upset. Now I get it, obviously.

Thank goodness for Tony, and the coaches having faith in him.

IF Parcells ever thought Carter would develop into a good QB he was a fool. In fact, his decision to go with Carter when he got here was about the time he lost me as a fan. And it completely ruined his tenure here as coach.

If not for his substance abuse issues who knows what Carter could have been. Cocaine and sports are not a good combination.

I don't know if he personally thought he would make it based on these quotes.
"I became pretty close with Quincy personally, and this kid had a lot of good qualities. He was smart. He understood it. But I just couldn’t save his ***. I really couldn’t.

"You just didn’t have the time. There he is, he got his team in the playoffs, he’s the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, he’s playing good, he’s improving, he can get out of trouble, he’s pretty smart, he can make almost every throw -- and it’s just, some people just can’t fight the pressure to succeed.

"They just can’t fight it. It’s too much on them once the bar gets up a little bit. It’s too much. I don’t know all the problems or the demons exactly, but that’s what eventually took him down."

"There were a couple of guys there that I knew I was going to have trouble counting on. Henson because of his newness and he didn’t seem to be able to sort things out and Quincy because of, you know ... "

Substance or not, Quincy "Bong" Carter was just flat our terrible. One of the most innacurate QB's I have EVER seen. AFLAC was the nickname that his own team mates gave him or do you forget? Remember them saying that "he isnt a good practice player"? The guy was just plain terrible as a QB. If he didnt have his legs he would have had nothing at all. He NEVER should have been drafted, he NEVER should have been handed the starting job.

to some degree Parcells was hand cuffed. But his affinity to be happy with "bus driver" QB's was his undoing here and a good part of his career. If it wasnt for LT, Parcells never would have won any SB's. Personally, I loathed the Parcells era more than any other era as a Cowboys fan. Quincy Carter was a big part of that.

Ditto. I thought BP was a rude egomaniac that the game had passed by eons ago. He was simply no longer any good. Not sure if he was ever all that to begin with.

I agree 100%. 3 yards and a cloud of dust with Quincy Carter leading was a joke. If I was EVER convinced that a team building strategy would NEVER yield a contender it was Parcells. And his FOB's were annoying. The game had definitely passed him by.

Carter was just the best out of a bunch of bad quarterbacks and it did work out okay considering we did go 10-6 and win the division. Carter was bad, Hutch was worse. I don't seem to recall a bunch of quarterbacks Parcells passed on to roll with Carter for one season and go 10-6. He just worked with the trash he inherited to the best of his abilities. Hell, that team was awful that went 10-6, the cowboys last year were much better even with the injuries IMO.

At first I was very happy. Then it was clear the game had passed him by. Then all the FOB's came out of the woodwork. Then we find out he was hired because Jerry wanted a new stadium. As a fan I felt jobbed.

Same way. When they hired him I was totally pumped. Then he made the decision that Carter would be his QB and it was curtains for me.
