The system is screwed but Romo situation helped his cause.

The performance system doesn't mean that if you don't perform, you're on welfare. These guys are still getting paid millions. Just think of it has having incentives in your base contract, but your base contract isn't ridiculous like T.O's. Do you think T.O. has earned his money this year?

Yes, he has.

I liked the tiered idea I read about one time:

This idea would work. My main beef is that rookie's are signing insane contracts and handicaping the rest of the team by sitting on the bench.

Doesn't the NBA have some kind of cap on rookie contracts and some kind of maximum contract for free agents? I dont know, the system can be fixed somehow.

The pay based on performance idea is probably the worst idea I have heard in a while.

I can see it now:

"Romo... don't throw to TO! Throw to me! He got the last one and I need to feed my children!"

And what about guys like Pat McQ? You want him to sit, learn, and develop. But with no PT, is he on welfare?

:laugh2: That is pretty funny....

No, not pay on an individual basis, but as a team basis...

If the team wins that week, everyone on the roster gets a HUGE paycheck in the same amount...this would also keep the animosity among superstars from happening...

"I wanna be the highest paid player...I want more money then Randy Moss or I'm not gonna play...so take that"!

But, I like that tiered system too, that sounds like something that would work better then what is going on now...however, I'm sure the powers that be have already argued all this out and came up with the current system as the best...

Oh, yeah, T.O. has surely earned every penny of that 10 mil so far...he should actually get another 10 mil just because....

i like incentive laced contracts, the problem is the nflpa would'nt go for that. remember these are not garunteed contracts. so a player would have very little security if not for the big bonus's. thats all the player will get for sure is the bonus, the rest he may or may not ever get. but i do like making incentives a part of contrcts but they can't be the major part as the nflpa would'nt go for it

First off the first round picks simply get too much money when many of them may never make it. As a result, these kids are forced to start many times before they are ready. Look how some on this board have called Carpenter a bust cause here it is midway in the season and he's barely been on the field/active list yet now we hear Parcells saying he's playing good in practice; doesn't sound like a bust to me. On the other hand the Eagles drafted Bunkley in first round and Winston Justice in the 2nd. Apparently Bunkly (a kid many on thise board wanted) is also being labeled a bust cause he gets pushed back much of the time at the LOS. I'm thinking maybe participating in the Eagles off field conditioning program next March probably does wonders for this kid. Similarly Justice isn't lightning up the boards either.

I think we all are a bunch of kids who demand production/performance now--just like we get in television programs. Well life isn't that way and may be some on this board need a reality check.

That would be real cool to see!

Someone mentioned that if you don't win the game this week, you don't get paid...but, when you do win a game this week, you get paid REAL GOOD...

That should provide some 'motivation' for some of these players, huh?

:D

...Randy Moss would be in the poor house. He only plays when he feels like it.

Tony would have probably sucked it up if he would have been stuck in 2 years ago. However, who's to say he wouldn't be better now if he'd been playing for 2 years rather than carrying a clipboard? No one will ever know. Bottom line is that you get your best players on the field. That's about all anyone can ever do.

I'm just not sure you can play much better than #9 is playing.... he has been unstoppable basically. You can't even say that about Manning. Brees is the only other QB that is rivaling Romo's play at this time.

The system will never be right until NFL contracts are awarded on a performance basis. Think about this for a second. Can you imagine how much more heart and desire these gifted athletes would play with if every catch, every TD, every rushing yard gave them more money?

I also think that NFL players would get more respect from the public than they do right now. Imagine, an NFL player has to earn a paycheck just like everybody else in the world. I can dream right?

JJ may be a horrible GM, but choosing to go for the boom-or-bust, low-risk, high reward route at QB, taking ones after the 1st round, and sometimes not from the draft at all, was smart thinking

too bad he was picking the wrong QBs, and was rushing them anyways lol

You would still keep some kind of base salary system in place just like it is now. For example, if you're the first pick in the draft, your base salary is going to be higher than the second pick, etc. The performance options would be more like bonus incentives on your contract.
Thats the one thing I think the NBA gets right, its the slotting salaries for draft picks, that account for inflation by increasing just a little every year. No more of this stupid contract holdouts for rookies who haven't proved a damn thing. Either sign it, or go into next year's draft.

One of the reasons the Colts will never win the SB is that they cannot now afford to build the rest of the team they need since they have to pay somuch to Manning, Harrison and a couple others. I have come to the conclusion that you just about cannot afford to have a great QB any more. Or if you do you have to let him go after the first contract. A top QB now can account for as much as 10% of your salary cap. Same with a top WR or RB. If you have all three you are toast. Imagine what it would cost RIGHT now if we had to sign AIkman, Irving and Smith at their peak this coming year?

Good point. Also, realize that Aikman, E. Smith, and Irvin all made deals with Jerry Jones and let JJ take money from their contracts so they could use that on free agents and re-signing key players.

I think it would be neat to have a pool of bonus money that will go to the team before the year starts. The money is then distributed at the end of the year according to how valuable you were to the team.

this would ruin the game and sports. you'd have every player worried about ME and MY STATS. Why did HE get the ball, etc.

NFL players have to "earn" more than any other pro athlete cause their contracts are guaranteed.
