The Thing about Dak and the Preseason

This offense is predicated on the run game setting up the run and a QB with the arm talent to keep a secondary honest and make them pay for mistakes.

While I'm impressed with his play, I'm taking it with a grain of salt.
Game one Romo will be the starter. (baring injury)
and every game after that (baring injury)
Dak is showing that he might be more than just another guy. He might be THE GUY. But that shouldn't be for a while.

I say, enjoy the excitement and lets get ready for the real season.

Its just nice to know that our insurance is actually worth something. Hopefully he has the wisdom and patience to use this year to learn from romo as much as possible so that whenever the time comes for him to take the main spot, he will be more than ready, just like romo was when he replaced bledsoe.

We're all excited by what Dak Prescott has shown this preseason and most of what we've read analyzing his play has been qualified with "it's preseason...teams aren't game-planning for him...vanilla defenses," which may all be true (to an extent), but are undercutting what Dak has done thus far.

First, the defensive schemes he's been facing are not that vanilla; he's not playing against defenses employing Senior Bowl schemes that can't blitz or are forced to run a 43. These teams are trying to get their personnel up-to-speed and comfortable with their own respective alignments and coverages so the notion of vanilla defenses is overstated.

Secondly, what's impressed me about Dak is the quality of throws he's been making. He's been hitting guys on the move, throwing to spots on deeper throws and carrying the safety/linebacker on certain coverages. That's impressive. What we've seen in previous years were guys like Dustin Vaughan become Checkdown Charlie and throwing to the easy read in the flat/comeback route.

Finally, if all these aspects brought up to temper the praise of Dak were true, we'd see a lot more rookie or young prospect QBs performing at a much higher level than they typically show.

Bottomline, I agree with being conservative with the praise, but I think there are very legitimate reasons to be excited at what Dak has shown.

He's destined for the PreSeason Hall of Fame

Pre season or not the guy looks very poised out there. He is making the reads, he is looking off receivers and finding the open man if it is not there he checks down or looks for an open lane to run. He does not seem overwhelmed by any of this. Same can't be said for some QB that went well before Dak was taken. I'm not looking to replace Romo anytime soon but I feel good about what I am seeing from Dak. Wade Wilson asked the OL guys if Dak was taking charge in the huddle and they seem to think he has full command of what is taking place.

Once you know you can do something the whole world changes.
He now has some confidence and it is falling into place for him.
Glad that fate gave him a chance to work with the first team.
If his only chance was with the second team this may never have happened.
I was wrong about this kid. Glad to say , I was wrong.

I would rather get excited early for a 4th round QB that is lighting it up than the alternative. He could be stinking up the joint like the QBs taken before him .

That's the point I've been trying to make. Some people act like other rookie QBs are facing regular season type defenses. I'd love to see a redraft done by fans of every team and see how many Rams, Eagles, and Broncos fans would take Dak over their real picks. Would anyone here trade Dak straight up for any other rookie qb? I know I wouldn't.

This dude @Section444 said he would trade Prescott and next year's 1st rounder for Goff

His command of the offense is uncanny I haven't seen a quarterback in a Dallas uniform through screens like those in years, not to mention his play fakes. He's a natural.

I will say that the only thing tempering my enthusiasm for him is his draft position and I realize how silly that is but those are the realities. It is hard to believe that 32 teams were that wrong about him and did not see the traits he has shown so far in college and realize they translate well to the pros. I only saw him play in college a couple times and I think one of those he threw two picks near the end of one of the games this season when they were trying to come back. If he was the 4th pick (and projected that high by all teams) instead of Zeke, I don't think anybody in the fanbase would doubt him at all. There would be dancing in the streets.

Now he will be working behind Romo knowing he can do it, not questioning himself....the game is 90% mental and the other half is physical, especially for a young QB....the KMoore injury really was a blessing

Kid definitely has talent so let's not screw it up. Keep the elite O-line intact and let him sit and learn behind Romo. If we do that, he has potential to be an elite QB in 2-3 years.

If a guy like Kirk Cousins can be an NFL QB then why not Dak?

I said Dak reminded me of Cam before the draft and got mugged around here...he just looks bigger and faster on the field and is a true dual threat....looks like he has 'it'

Good point. He's doing great things against the same defenses (and better) than other guys are struggling against. If you were to take Dak's performance and flip flop it with the number one pick Goff, people would be over the moon about Goff living up to expectations, and Dak would be just a 4th rounder trying to find his way in the NFL.

But it's a valid caveat to say that pre-season performance is no guarantee of future regular season performance, regardless of draft status or anything else.

That being said I would rather him being blowing it up in the preseason like he is now, and having to downplay his skills, rather than the other way around!

I think personally people get hung up on the draft position a guy came out of. Draft is over, it now comes down to actually going out on the field and producing I don't care if you are a 1 or a 5th rd pick what are you doing on the field that is what matters the draft is a fricken guessing game what takes place on the field it real. You can't spin it you can't hide it.
