The Thirst for Brian Waters

Last Wednesday, the Dallas Cowboys agreed to a contract with offensive guard Brandon Moore in hopes that he would finally be able to resolve the pathetic play of the right guard position since Kyle Kosier left. But just a few hours after agreeing to a contract, Moore decided to retire instead of joining the team.

The Cowboys were then left to look for another veteran option at guard. The option they turned to was former All-Pro Brian Waters.

Waters started his career in Dallas after the team signed the undrafted free agent in 1999. After being cut by the Cowboys, Waters signed on with Kansas City, where he was an All-Pro guard twice and reached the Pro Bowl six times during his stint with the Chiefs.

Why would the Cowboys try to entice a 36-year-old guard out of retirement and into the starting lineup? Because they believe he can still be an elite player.

He just better be what we think he is, since he's taking his precious time like this. Smh

My opinion is the closer we get to the 3rd preseason game the less interesting he becomes.

The team has a rookie center in place and to throw Waters into the mix without having worked (a lot) with Frederick... And Free to a lesser extent, doesn't sound like a good idea.

By most accounts Bern has done fine as the RG, both in practice and in the exhibition game vs the Dolphins.

Finally retaining as much extra cap space as possible to roll into 2014 isn't a bad idea.

he will be very popular around the entire league after week one.

The reason that we want him so much is because RG is the one signal position where we aren't at least solid. It just feels like a weak link in an otherwise strong chain. And Waters, even at 36, is certainly capable of being at least solid. I make no apologies -- I'm thirsty for some Waters.

I'm not so sure.

Teams could have easily gotten his rights from NE at the start of last season if they wanted him bad enough.

Again, you're looking at an old guy (NFL speaking) who hasn't played a down in almost a year and a half... and seems to want top buck.

That's not a good combination.

after week one, his salary is no longer guaranteed.

so the durability concerns, the concern about his motivation, and how those pertain to the cap wash away.

He wont be popular because he has made it clear, the only chance he's playing is if he stays close to his home town. Only potential suitors would be Dallas or Houston.

It doesn't have to be guaranteed BUT the terms of the contract can be written anyway the two sides decide to do it.

And I think there's zero percent chance Waters signs without getting any guaranteed money. As a matter of fact I think you'll have a greater chance of Risen Star posting about his love of cornerbacks before Waters signs without having a large chuck of his salary guaranteed... be it now, week 1 or week 5.

Actually, I think it's Dallas is his only consideration. He lives here, and wants to sleep in his own bed during the season.

I agree with you but having a reliable backup at the very least is a nice piece to have. I wouldn't have a problem signing him. However, it would be nice to roll some extra cap into 2014.

I like the idea of rolling cap space, too, but this thing is promising enough that you have to make this move. Depth is so critical in the NFL, and Dallas could have a legit guard, center, and tackle in reserve if they sign Waters. Costa, Bernadeau, and Parnell are pretty good backups.

At this point Livings may be that reserve guy at guard... He didn't play badly last year.

Obviously much depends on the knee situation, but if he can play Livings would make for a good reserve guard.

a vested vet on a roster prior to week one has his full season salary, regardless of what happens to him.

a vet signed after week one doesn't. unless an injury settlement comes into play, he is only payed for the weeks he is signed.

One week of training camp left. I'm thinking Waters probably wants to miss that.

But I think the team and the player can agree to some sort of guaranteed amount, i.e. signing bonus that isn't affected by what you posted above.

However I think it's a moot point in that if Waters isn't here to start the season, he won't be signed after week 1.
