I keep hearing he should be better in a zone scheme. We will see.

I would consider it a major win if we get Brandon Carr level play from him
After this draft, I'm not really too concerned if he doesn't work out. I'm with you in regards to his play. I know he's not great, but I would be pretty happy if he was Carr average

He is major asset right now in that he is a hill the rookies have to climb. If Awuzie or Lewis wants to get major snaps this year, they have to win them

Like the OP topic a lot. Now is the time to start asking these questions.

DL will be a very intriguing battle. Who plays where and how much is all up in the air for all 4 spots. Will likely hold my interest most moving forward.

People have been bashing Carroll because Dez smoked him but asking any but the most elite corners to defend a healthy Bryant without help is a recipe for disaster.

Jones, Heath, and potentially Woods give us the ability to run multiple looks on the backend and we can trot out 5 corners and not feel bad about any of them. I don't expect that we will be a predominant man team despite the dynamics. Can Woods make a push for playing time or similarly can he contribute on ST to be active on game days.

I have no idea what to expect from Frazier, McFadden or Showers.

Beyond Jaylon's foot, only interest I have at LB is if Morris can make the squad.

On offense what they end up doing between LG and RT is my number one interest. Can Cooper beat out Green for playing time forcing them to move Collins? Can Green hold off Cleary and Bell and win the spot? Chaz Green and Jon Cooper play different positions but will be competing for playing time.

5th and 6th WR will be a fierce competition. Lucky, Brown, Jones, and Butler are all competing for one or maybe two spots if Bisaccia can be convinced of one's ST merit. Andy Jones is my early dark horse to make the squad that way as he made ST plays last PS.

TE is kind of a sad competition. Hanna's knee likely is shot. What can Rico do to fill that void. They say it takes two years in an NFL training program to really convert your body. Where is Swaim at in that respect and can Rico challenge him for playing time and starts?

The OL dynamic is interesting. Green is a very OT, but you cant count on him right now for more then a few games. Based on his play last year he is probably the 2nd best OT on the roster. Outside of Smith, Cooper may be the physically gifted OL on the roster, including Martin and Collins. Havent followed him enough in the NFL to know why it hasnt clicked, but if it starts to, they need to take a good look at where they are playing people

We need Chaz to take every meaningful snap at RT this offseason

RDE:

We seem to have four likely suitors at the position, with Charlton and Lawrence the most likely to win. Two dark horses behind them are Tapper and Mayowa, our 2016 sack leader. Lawrence is the most accomplished rusher at the moment, and notched an 8 sack season in 2015. However that was on the left side of the line. Charlton will likely get every opportunity to win the job in TC and preseason. There is alot of intrigue in Tapper as he tested through the roof at the combine and looked good in OTA's last year before being diagnosed with Pars defect. Mayowa is a deep sleeper as he finished very strong last year, but that is also after he got benched. He will have to show alot of growth in TC and preseason to get in the fight to be the starting RDE. He may be more valuable to us as a rotation player. I would not be surprised one bit if Charlton beats out the field and is our opening day RDE

Nolan Carroll VS. Rookie CB's:

Im going to leave the top 2 (Brown and Scandrick) alone for right now. Carroll based on experience is the early favorite as there can often times can be a steep curve for rookie DB's in particular CB's. The prevailing thought is that Carroll will be a more effective CB in a zone system. We shall see. The two day 2 picks are going to push very hard for that 3rd DB spot. Awuzie is more then likely a bigger threat than Lewis as both Awuzie and Carroll are boundary CB's whereas Lewis thrives more in the slot. However you also have the thought of putting your best players on the field, and if Lewis is clearly the best of the three, they could always find a way to make it work. Could be much ado of nothing with more of a committee approch and no clear #3. We shall see.

Robert Blanton VS Young Safeties

Small potatoes yes, but I believe Blanton doesn't get a roster spot if he isnt the 3rd Safety. Awuzie's ability to play Safety may allow us to go short at Safety. That could mean a roster spot for Brown or White, two intriguing late round picks who might not make it through waivers. Blanton at this point is what he is, but Frazier and/or Woods have to make them feel comfortable about putting them on the field on defense. This could very well change with our depth at CB, but our 3rd Safety got a good volume of snaps last year. Probably more than our 4th CB ( not counting time spent in the starting lineup due to injury by Wilcox and Brown). I dont see them cutting Woods who they had rated in their top 68. Frazier, who they had highly rated last would, would likely have to completely bomb to get cut. Small potatoes, but being able to move on from Blanton may allow us to not have to expose a talented developmental rookie to waivers

A small bit of trivia. Last season when they bumped Brown to full time starter and demoted Scandrick to only playing snaps with 3 CBs on the field, it was Garrett not Marinelli that made the final decision.

I wouldn't over work him. We saw that ability is not a problem for him. He started two games at LT with Tyron out last season and did a great job.

The more snaps he plays in preseason, the more chances he has to get injured.

Honestly if I was a GM from what I saw of him, if there werent health concerns I would call the Cowboys and see what it would take to get to play LT.

The drop off from Smith wasnt very steep
