It's a slow week in Dallas Cowboys land, so lets have some fun with a late round draft prospect who is short on resume' and very long on freakish attributes.

Darren Waller is such an intriguing draft prospect that I felt compelled to create a new offensive package for him. Waller is 6’6" and runs very fast for a guy his size. At 238 pounds, with 33 ¼ inch arms, a vertical of 37 inches and a 40 time in the 4.4’s, this guy is freak. His write up on NFL.Com includes this gem: "almost impossible to guard on back-shoulder throws. Confident and competitive when the ball is in the air."

And this, "effortless strider with untapped vertical speed to go yard." Now, the guy has had some issues. "Suspended for season-opening in both 2013 and 2014 for violation of team rules." And he is a very raw talent. He played for Georgia Tech and they run the ball nearly all the time.

But that means he will be there in the later rounds. Should Dallas take him? It would be shocking if they did, but lets say he’s still there in round 6. You’re looking at 1 in 10 odds of landing a player that can actually help you. Why not take a shot on a boom-bust guy who could revolutionize your red zone offense? Here is how it could be done.

They already have a great redzone package. Bryant out wide on one side and Escobar out wide on the other. Teams should be doubling Bryant which leaves Escobar 1v1. Unfortunately, Dallas/Romo insist on throwing back shoulder to the TE when they should throw a jump ball with his 6'6" frame, 33.5" arms, and 32" vertical. Look at the mismatch.

The only problem this team had in the red zone was when the defense was on the field. Teams ran at will inside our 20. IIRC, we ranked 28th in rushing TD allowed.

He is an interesting developmental player, no doubt. Freakish measurable(s). He looks better as a receiver than many past tall, fast WRs like the one that was in camp last year.

Raw...how many "raw" players has this franchise taken hoping on the come?

Would you prefer more low upside 7th rounds like Caleb McSurdy.

The main reason that he is raw is because he played in an offense that ran the ball 95% of the time.

We have best red zone weapon in the league.

Don't need to make things unnecessarily complicated

Escobar isn't good enough of an athlete to throw him jump balls.

His size advantage is negated by his pedestrian 32 inch vert. Jason Witten is 6'5" with a 31 inch vertical, but you don't want to be throwing jump balls to Wit.

Nowhere near the type of skillset as Dez, who you can just throw it up in his vicinity and he'll go get it.

Sounds like a taller and faster Shannon Sharpe. I'm not certain why we don't find and use a hybrid receiver. He would be very difficult to cover. He would have a very large catch radius and even when covered it would be difficult to stop it.

Demaryus Thomas played for Georgia Tech too.

I like Waller a ton as a late-round pick.

That is a good idea but it needs to be a defensive player not an offensive player.

There is nothing wrong with our red zone offense. Why do we need to revolutionize it?

Since the pass defense is the weakest part of our team, either take the player with the best pass rushing ability (DL or LB) or CB that could be a good cover corner.

Trying to add a weapon to a championship calilber offense when our defense is in need of help just doesn't make a bit a sense to me.

I don't know on what planet a 6'6" guy with nearly a 3 foot vertical is considered pedestrian, but okay.

Plus, he doesn't stand there in combine tights and jump straight up to catch a ball. But like I said, okay.

I undershot it, we were actually 31st in rushing TD allowed in 2014.

Dallas defense rank
rushing TD allowed

total rush TD: 31st
in red zone: 31st
inside 10: 31st
inside 5: 31st

We were so good at keeping teams out of FG range, and so bad once they got there, that teams only attempted 18 field goals against us, which was the lowest in the league since 2010.

a 32 inch vertical might be impressive to you, but it's mediocre by NFL standards.

Defend him with a 5'10" CB who has a 40 inch vertical, and all of a sudden that 6'6" height advantage is negated.

And I don't know why you'd dismiss verticals when talking about a jump ball. His vert is relevant when we're talking about a play where you literally jump straight up in the air to try to high point the ball.

Does the 5'10" CB also weigh 245lbs and have a near 7 foot wingspan? Doubtful that he's a silverback gorilla.

People pick the weirdest stuff to be obtuse about around here.

I know you don't participate in the Hayden bashing and it may be poor form but if that is not an indictment of our NT then I don't know what is.

We tried the jump ball fade to TE's with Martellus Bennett and it just looked painfully awkward.

We've tried splitting Escobar out wide at the goaline with the same amount of success.

Being 6'6" doesn't make you Jimmy Graham.
