One of the most prestigious beer rankings in America has crowned a new champion in a major upset.

For 15 years, Zymurgy Magazine - the official magazine of the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) - has asked the group's tens of thousands of members to cast votes for the best beers in the country. The idea is that Zymurgy readers, as homebrewers, have more refined palates than most and can suss out the winners.

Pliny the Elder, a double IPA from Russian River Brewing Company, held down the top spot for eight straight years - until now. Read on to find out the best beers in America and which IPA dethroned the king.

10. BALLAST POINT BREWING CO.SCULPIN IPA
8. SIERRA NEVADA BREWING CO. CELEBRATION (TIE)
8. DESCHUTES BREWERY FRESH SQUEEZED IPA (TIE)

6. THE ALCHEMIST BREWERY HEADY TOPPER (TIE)
6. FOUNDERS BREWING CO. KBS OR KENTUCKY BREAKFAST STOUT (TIE)
5. BELL'S HOPSLAM ALE

4. 3 FLOYDS BREWING CO. ZOMBIE DUST
3. FOUNDERS BREWING CO. BREAKFAST STOUT
2. RUSSIAN RIVER BREWING COMPANY PLINY THE ELDER

1. BELL'S TWO HEARTED ALE

Kalamazoo, Michigan

The new king of beer is an IPA that - unlike its sibling Hopslam Ale - uses 100% Centennial hops picked from the Pacific Northwest. Balance is key here. The hops aroma bursts with grapefruit, pineapple, pine, and a hint of spice - but a rich, caramel malt backbone tames the bitterness. A crisp finish leave you craving another sip.

With a more modest 7% alcohol, you better make it two pints.

Really good ones. But Weihenstephaner is noticeably missing.

Sculpin is amazing, but very played-out, now. Maybe I've just grown tired of it after hundreds, perhaps more, bottles of the stuff. Was one of the true greats for a while.

Love that Sierra Nevada is on the list. Their Torpedo IPA is unbelievable.

Russian River brewery makes amazing brew. Pliny is top notch. Heady Topper is a legend in the beer world, also.

Founders makes the best Imperial Stouts in the world.

Pretty great list, BD! These people know their brew.

Ahum!,,," This is the famous Budweiser beer,we know of no other brand produced by any other brewer which costs so much to brew and age,our exclusive beechwood aging produces a taste, smoothness and drinkability you will find in no other brand at any price"

I'd memorized that brilliant labeling stamp upon quaffing my very first 6 pack of that stuff damn near 40 years ago!:)

I found Bell's Two Hearted Ale at a little market near me while I was on vacation this week. First time I've had it, good stuff. I still prefer Deschutes Fresh Squeezed though.

I had the Bell's Two Hearted on draft Monday night. Didn't care for it.

After spending 4 years in Germany, refining my palette on the domestic brews through out that country, upon arrival back to the United States I was sad to come to the realization that American beers, for the most are woefully inferior. After several years of disappointment I have lowered my expectations and finally settled on calling Shiner Hefeweizen by beer of choice. It lacks the punch of German brews yet still refreshing.

You will adore Weihenstephaner, Star. The best German beer (lager and Hefeweizen) in the states. Pricey at 14.99/6 pack (both, the lager and heff are the same price) but absolutely worth it!

One of my top-3 beers, brother.

Always, Star. I promise you you will love it and won't want to go to any other beer. It's heaven in a glass bottle. :)
Just googled a local liquor store only a block away that carries Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbeer Dark. I'm outta here, brother... getting my brewski buz on. Cheers!
