Kirk Ferentz, Iowa

The true measure of a man is how he responds to adversity. Ferentz has passed the test, pulling the Hawkeyes from a three-year slump to a 9-4 mark in 2008. Even better, Ferentz appears to have Iowa poised for another glorious run after leading the school to two Big Ten crowns from 2002-04. And Ferentz has done all of this with less-than-blue-chip talent.

Iowa (OL)
Maine
Cleveland Browns (OL) 1993–1995
Baltimore Ravens (OL) 1996–1998
Iowa 1999–present

This time the Hawkeyes picked apart the South Carolina Gamecocks en route to a dominating 31-10 victory.

Four out of the last five years, Ferentz’s Farmboys have traveled down to sunny Florida and served notice to the nation’s elite conference. Two of those games were Iowa blowouts, one a dramatic come-from-behind win, and the lone loss has a rather large asterisk next to it.

In 2004, the Hawkeyes hammered the Florida Gators, humiliating them to the tune of a 37-17 drubbing. The Gators were gashed for 238 yards on the ground, and the Hawkeyes put the game out of reach early in the 3rd quarter.

The following year, Iowa faced a tough LSU squad playing its final game under Nick Saban. And while Iowa squandered plenty of opportunities, they capitalized on the biggest one—a 56 yard bomb on the last play of the game, leading to a 30-25 win in a game no LSU fan wants to remember.
In 2006, a rematch with the Gators looked to be a classic revenge game as Florida took a 31-7 lead into the final quarter—but the Hawkeyes made a furious comeback, scoring 17 unanswered points.

With over a minute left, Iowa successfully recovered an onside kick and were poised for the game-tying score. It was all for naught, however, as the refs whistled the Hawkeyes for being offsides, even though replays show it was a phantom call at best.
Who knows if Iowa would have scored and forced OT that year, but with all the momentum they had, you had to like their chances. As it was, they fell by the final score of 31-24.

For whatever reason, that game seemed to foretell the future for each team. Urban Meyer’s Gators steamrolled in recruiting, won a national championship, and garnered national exposure behind media darling Tim Tebow.

Iowa, meanwhile, struggled mightily, going a combined 12-13 over the next two seasons. In that time, Ferentz was widely criticized, especially since Ferentz’s salary was well above most of his peers’.

But the Hawkeyes regrouped this season, and Ferentz’s return to Tampa in 2009 became a familiar scene for the Hawkeye faithful, as this game was over before it started.

Mere minutes after Iowa opened the game with a methodical touchdown drive, they were back in the end zone, courtesy of an errant Stephen Garcia interception. From there, the rout was on.
Just like that, Ferentz quietly orchestrated a quiet 9-4 season. Not too shabby.

Prior to Ferentz’s arrival at Iowa, the last time the Hawkeyes won a January bowl game was in 1959. In addition, Iowa was 0-5 in games played in Florida before Ferentz quickly made that change as well.

Only teams in the SEC should be proud of winning a Conference championship because every other conference is a 2 team race at best.

We know going into every season OU can just out athlete every team in their conference besides Texas.

We know USC can out athlete their conference.

And we know the Cluckeyes only have Michigan in their way.

Who cares?

OU is a joke also. They are just to predictable.

They will either

A: Win the Big 12 and be given a National title shot again this year surely screwing another team that is a better all around team than they are.

or

B: Texas will win the Big 12 and OU will still get a BCS bowl because the conference has nobody that can realistically compete with either of these 2.

or

C: They will just win the big 12 and go to the fiesta bowl

Winning your conference is so meh....

College football desperately needs a playoff. Something worth winning.

And the best part about a playoff is OU would get owned until they figure out how to play defense against teams that have talent / depth that is on their level.

Did you not watch the big 12 last year? Texas tech squandered their opportunity, Nebraska is on the rise, Colorado is improving, Kansas is solid, Missouri is capable of beating evryone in hte conference, Baylor is on the cusp of bowl contention, Iowa St. is usually a bowl team as is Kansas St. Texas A&M is in a funk but is usually competitive Oklahoma State is making noise.

It is a very competitive conference, particularly th Big 12 South.

But yes a wildcard playoff round would be apropo.

Look at the number of draft picks Mack Brown has had since he has been at Texas. WITH all THAT talent he has ONE NC. And that took incredible playing by Vince Young to win.

No Art Briles or Mike Leach? You'll think of them soon enough.

Leach will have his team lose to the likes of New Mexico again.

Tech had one of its best teams of all time last year, had a very good year, but still came up as a 2nd tier team in the end. This season's team will not be nearly as good, so I expect them to have a down year.

What has Tressell and Stoops done lately with arguably more talent to top that?

These teams aren't on OU or Texas's level.

They just don't land the amount of bigtime recruits.

Don't get me wrong the big 12 is the 2nd best conference. It's usually a battle between the big 12 and pac 10 as to who is 2nd best.

But neither conference has very good depth.

While Tech did have a good offense they had 0 defense.

OU is a lot like Texas Tech when they go against the big boys in College football.

Their offense alone just can't get them over that hump.

IMO if a conference is as bad as the big 12 and pac 10 are defensively than it just shows what kind of depth / talent these conferences have.

OU has the 2nd best defense in the big 12 and of all the power house teams in the nation OU's defense just isn't very good and lets them down a lot compared to others.

He might have had 2 last year.

Pete Carroll might have had one too.

When voters decide who plays for a title its kind of hard to throw that on any team.

OU however has been givin several opportunities but they just can't cash it in.

I think Florida vs Texas or Florida vs USC would have been the better game beause USC & Texas have the best all around teams.

OU had the best offense in the nation but offense aloen only gets you so far.

I see it the opposite as you. The NC is so meh because there really isn't a defined way to get in the game. It's a popularity contest and it's nearly impossible to say at the end of the year this team is clearly #1. However a conference championship normally is more clear cut although last year in the big 12 is a poor example.

Look at all the previous MNC's and almost every year you can make a legitimate case for another team just as deserving as the so called champion. It is what it is and I hope it eventually changes but right now college football is based on it's regional match ups and meaningless bowl games.

I'm sorry but give me a Big 12 title over a Holiday Bowl win or even a so called "BCS Bowl" unless it's the title game.

Nope, I'de trade a a Bowl win outside of the MNC for a Conference Championship anytime. I think if you polled college coaches you would get the same answer.
