The truth is, these Cowboys are overachieving! I know, I know…the popular thing to believe is that they could be 4-0. I can hear the excuses now "if only we did (fill in the blank) against the Giants," or "man, if only that one play in the Denver game went our way...”
The truth is that this Cowboys team does very well at playing teams so close for MOST OF THE GAME that it looks like they can play with anyone. And year in year out we've seen this phenomenon; but we have also seen this team fall short EVERY SINGLE TIME. The good teams seem to turn it up, or make the critical play, against this team when it matters most in games to pull off the win. And those are the moments that this team finds itself losing games - EVERY SINGLE TIME!
And because they overachieve, these cowboys manage to win a game or two here and there. And when you overachieve then that’s an accomplishment. So I'm not unrealistic to think that these Cowboys should be 4-0; no, I'm happy that they're 2-2, because they could very easily have been 0-4. And a potential 0-4 record is more realistic for these Cowboys than believing that they should be 4-0.
So not only is it a blessing that these Cowboys are 2-2, it’s also a curse to know that they won’t be better than this, given that they got here by overachieving. So for overachieving, I say to thes Cowboys: "Congratulations!" And Kudos to this coaching staff for getting a bunch of losers to play above their game and have and average-at-best showing, when reality should fare their record much worse.
And for knowing that that’s no better than a .500 record I have to say “wait ‘til next year”; just like I had to say last year; just like I had to say that the year before that; and the year before that…
