Jaime Aron, AP sportswriter, has knocked out some decent articles about the 'Boys lately. Yesterday, he wrote about how this Cowboys team finally looks like a Parcells team. Hallelujah, it's about time. The 2003 season was a mirage, a false oasis in the desert, leading us astray. Once we walked up to the fake salvation, we found the 2004 season. Only then did Parcells truly realize we were lost in the desert. Now, he's charted a course for the ocean at the edge of the desert and he put the camels in a 3-4 formation to get us there.
In 2003, Parcells inherited a team that many thought was done in its current form. That's why Jerry hired the Tuna in the first place. Parcells knew it too, but you have to play the hand you are dealt or fold. He decided to play the hand. Parcells bluffed his way into the playoffs and decided he could do it again in 2004. When the rest of the NFL went all-in and called that bluff, Parcells was toast, and Dallas was lost in the desert. Time to trade in the camels.
Parcells favorite movie has got to be Back To The Future, in fact it seems to be his life motto. He had been slowly collecting pieces of his past, guys like Terry Glenn and Keyshawn Johnson, but sometimes you can go too far back in time, and bring back the dinosaurs like Vinnus Testaverdus Rex. Undaunted, Parcells brought some more of his past back this year, adding Drew Bledsoe and Aaron Glenn to the mix. Even when he can't get the players of his past, he gets them in spirit by comparing DeMarcus Ware to LT and using the nickname "Pepper" for new Cowboy Thomas Johnson.
Still, the best thing about the new Bill Parcells is he is now like the old Bill Parcells. And that Parcells won championships. Finished with the bend-don't-break 4-3 defense, he introduced his true love, the aggressive 3-4 scheme. His defensive coordinator would just have to learn it and learn it quick, and the whole 2005 draft was centered around filling out a 3-4 roster. Today, the Tuna seems more invigorated, more excited, and he should. The Cowboys roster has depth and has playmakers, plus a lot of talented rookies. He has what he wants. A running back to control the ball, a QB he trusts, and a 3-4 defense built to pressure the offense and create turnovers. If that doesn't say Tuna Ball then the Pope really isn't Catholic and a bear doesn't do its business in the woods.
No one can say for sure how this will all turn out, the NFL season is long and the obstacles are many. But you have to feel better about the Cowboys direction. A draft that so far is the envy of other teams and good depth at RB, WR and along the defensive line are signposts to a better future. Pack up the camels and let's get out of this desert, the Tuna needs to swim in the ocean again.
