This was a hard hit, but I don't see how it's a penalty. Fields was running what is he supposed to do?

ARTICLE 9. PLAYERS IN A DEFENSELESS POSTURE. It is a foul if a player initiates unnecessary contact against a player
who is in a defenseless posture. A player who initiates contact against a defenseless opponent is responsible for avoiding an
illegal act. A standard of strict liability applies for any contact against an opponent, even if his body position is in motion, and
irrespective of any acts by him, such as ducking his head or curling up his body in anticipation of contact.
(a) Players in a defenseless posture are:
(1) A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass (passing posture).
.
.
(b) Prohibited contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture is listed below. However, these provisions do not prohibit
incidental contact by the mask or helmet in the course of a conventional tackle or block on an opponent:
(1) forcibly hitting the defenseless player’s head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm, or shoulder, even if the
initial contact is lower than the player’s neck, and regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle
the defenseless player by encircling or grasping him;

I mean, pretty textbook. Penalty all day.

This game was in Art Rooney Stadium with the Stealers. Whacha expect? A fairly called game?

You knew early in the 1st qtr. when Dak was just outside the tackle box and they called grounding and then completed the pass to Tolbert or Turpin clearly over the line to gain for a 1st down and the tackle carried him behind the marker and they placed the ball down where he hit the ground a yard short of 1st down. Easy to call how this game would be influenced by the Stripes.

No sweat though, Dallas won and beat them both.

It was pretty close. I don't think anybody here would have a problem with it if it was our quarterback getting hit like that and a flag coming out.

I understand why they threw the flag. Wheat's helmet hit under Fields's chin. That is a penalty even if Wheat didn't intend for his helmet to hit him high. Can't lead with the helmet.

I didn't have an issue with the call. Wheat went high and helmet to facemask. That gets called most times if they see it and you're not the Chiefs.

Fields took some big hits that game. Probably factored into his play late.

The entire DL played well last night when it was as thin as could be.

That’s NFL 2024 for you.

They may find Detroits OL a bit more formidable, but it’s next to impossible to predict what may happen in this league.

I dunno, the NFC is so wide open I just wish they made a better effort to add players in the off-season. I just don’t get worrying about how you’re going to sign Parsons years from now so you throw away what’s right in front of you.

I mean they are going to call it every time whether it was technically legal or not when the point of contact is that high.
Yep, since it’s not a reviewable call, seems like they rather err on the side of caution. Seen this occur in multiple games. Maybe it should be reviewable.
