The leagues #1 drafted player is currently the backup QB for Washington.

I'd love for it to become a viable option to the NFL. Are there games going to be quicker? If the NFL game gets any longer the new start times will be, 1, 5 and 9 on Sundays...
 
One factor is based on scheduling (XFL winter / spring, CFL summer / fall) permitting players to play in both.

Could get interesting if this gets the green light. You'll essentially have a year-round development league, where players at minimum are earning ~300k for participating, maybe forcing the NFL bumping up practice squad and minimum salaries.

Fortunately for them and unlike the USFL, the XFL is being launched in a time where online streaming is common among most of the viewers. Hopefully they have put more focus on that than relying on people to come to the stadiums for their business model.

If the XFL can secure a multi-year licensing deal with a non-subscription sports network of some kind (ex: not ESPN), then that could give them enough of a buffer period to brand and promote the XFL to help establish a more die-hard fan base. After the curious and short-attention-span viewers disappear, the viewership will start to decline so they will need to have a plan in place to outlast the decline period while they work to grow their popularity.

That said, the more likely scenarios are it will either become a practice squad league for not-signed-yet-in-NFL players to showcase their abilities or the league will be gone within 5 years due to lack of interest.

What the NFL should do is wait to see how the XFL does with fans after 1-2 years and if it does well, buy the XFL and make it their minor league where football players could by-pass colleges and go professional right out of high school.

I would not be surprised if that is the actual business plan behind the investors/owners in the XFL.

The key to the XFL would be having year-around football.

If they make the XFL for the NFL off-season, that'd be great.

I want to watch some football when there isn't any football.

If XFL does that, I'm in.

It would be cool if it was like a D-league. I've been to NBA and MLB d league games and they were fun. Most importantly cheap

That is their plan.. their season launches a week after the Super Bowl.

Though, I think a week after the draft may be better.

Wonder if small school guys will play in the XFL as a way to boost their draft stock.
 
XFL is testing a theory I think is quite interesting - changes the complete strategy and approach to the game -

Eliminate extra points by allowing teams to convert for 1 point from the 2 yard line, 2 points from the 5 yard line, or 3 points from the 15 yard line.
