The Kornheiser review...
Last night was my first opportunity to hear ESPN's
Monday Night Football crew of Mike Tirico, Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser.
I've always enjoyed Kornheiser's work on
Pardon the Interruption and in the
Washington Post, so I came in with an open mind. My first impression was that he's trying a little too hard.
There's a really fine line when you're attempting to entertain and inform at the same time, and Tony's still trying to find his footing. The problem with Dennis Miller on
MNF was that everything sounded canned.
It's the problem Kornheiser's already facing.
The producers have him providing commentary for all these pre-packaged graphics, and it just comes across as forced.
I also sensed a little tension between Kornheiser and Theismann. You get the feeling that Theismann's constantly wanting to remind Tony that he didn't play football.
Poor Tony K. was really trying to drive home a point about Commanders safety Sean Taylor's reputation for being a dirty player hurting him with officials, but Theismann just dismissed him.
Tony couldn't let it go when Taylor was called for a facemask penalty a few minutes later, and once again, Theismann blew him off, saying, "A facemask has nothing to do with reputation."
Kornheiser's good when he trusts his instincts. When Tirico went down some strange road about the Vikings having dirty diapers, Kornheiser snapped, "If we could get away from the baby analogy for a moment..."
It was funny moment and Tirico took it well. Just didn't hear enough of those moments last night.
What do you guys think?
