Since 2009, there have been multiple NFL teams who have lost starters and even stars who missed big chunks or even the whole season and STILL won the SB.

Warren Sharp did a study posted back in Jan, 2023 showing teams that won SBs despite a lot of games missed due to injuries between 2009-2022. Here are a few teams since 2009 that won a SB despite a ton of injuries:
  • New York giants- 2011- won the SB despite losing multiple starters that year.
  • Green Bay packers- 2010- Big Mac has lots of experience managing injuries. His 2010 packer team was a hospital that year.
  • New England pats- won multiple SBs in that period with multiple injuries.
  • New Orleans saints- won a SB in 2009 with more than a few injuries.
I know it’s normal to feel bad about the Travon Diggs injury. He is certainly a loss but this kind of thing happens to even really good teams and they find a way to win anyway. Maybe our fans are still thinking like the Garrett days where missing a single starter for multiple games was known as a losing streak. Doesn’t have to be that way now.

The Giants, Packers, Pats and Saints had Hall of Fame QBs.

He is a great player, but let’s keep perspective. Dude has 1 Int and 1 forced fumble. We will be fine. We are deep at cb. Everyone needs to stop acting like Garrett is coaching this team. Those days of one injury sinking the season are over. Mike is a winner, won with a a backup qb last year and this team is tough as nails!

Go cowboys!

those are saying its no big loss are just as stupid as those saying the season is beginning to tank

Fact is many fine teams had critical injuries that ruined their seasons. That a few teams overcame all that and won a SB does not prove much.

SB/Conf champion winners who had major injuries but did NOT have a HOF QB:
  • 1985 Bears- lost 2 starters on their vaunted defense and won with non HOF Jim McMahon at QB.
  • 1990 giants- lost starting QB Phil Simms to injury and won the SB with backup QB Jeff Hostetler. Neither QB was a HOFer.
  • 1991 Wash team- won a SB missing starting RB, 2 OL and Mark Rypien at QB. Not a HOFer.
  • 2000 Ravens- won SB with a great D and non-HOFer QB Trent Dilfer.
  • 2003 panthers- won an NFC championship missing two OL starters and nearly beat the SB champ pats, losing 32-29 with non-HOFer Jake Delhomme at QB.
  • 2012 ravens- won SB with tons of injuries on both sides of the ball and won with non-HOFer Joe Flacco.
  • 2013 Seahawks- overcame injuries on OL and had non-HOFer (IMO) Russell Wilson at QB.
  • 2017 e-girls- won a SB with backup and Non-HOF QB Nick Foles and several key starters injured.
Its clear. Nice to have a HOF QB. Many SBs are won by HOF QBs. But it’s an excuse to act like not having a HOF QB or some injuries kills your chances.

Some of those teams mentioned were decades ago when you really didn’t need a Hall of Fame QB to win a championship. The game has changed some since then. The focus was on running the ball and playing great defense. The 85 Bears won with defense and so did the 2000 Ravens. Although Joe Flacco wasn’t a Hall of Fame QB, he played like one during the 2012 playoffs and Super Bowl. He had 11 TDs and no INTs and was named Super Bowl MVP. The 2013 Seahawks won the Super Bowl because of their running game/Marshawn Lynch, and the Legion of Boom. The 2017 Eagles won the Super Bowl with Nick Foles who played like a Hall of Fame QB during the playoffs and Super Bowl. Like Joe Flacco, he lit it up in the Super Bowl having a Super Bowl MVP performance. The strength so far of the 2023 Cowboys has been their defense. Diggs was a big part of it and he’s our top ball hawker. We’ll just have to see what affect if any of his loss has. We just have to hope Gilmore stays healthy because if he goes down our secondary will be crippled.

Right. Having a HOF QB is not required to win a SB as history clearly shows. It helps but not required.
My main point in this thread is that although losing Diggs is a blow, it definitely doesn’t have to be a knockout.

History shows that you didn’t need a Hall of Fame QB decades ago, because everything revolved around running the ball and playing great defense. However, these days a QB has to play outstanding in the playoffs and Super Bowl to win a championship. Times have changed and the NFL is a QB driven league, which is why QBs salaries have skyrocketed. A lot more has been put on the plates of QBs. Their play influences the outcome of games more than ever. This is why they’re always being named league MVP. Just about every Super Bowl these days comes down to a QB having to make plays to win. Most Super Bowl MVPs are QBs. So much of a team success is dependent on their QB. Losing Trevon Diggs is a blow, and I agree it doesn’t have to be a knockout blow. We just have to hope we don’t suffer anymore season ending injuries to key players. We’ve had four players go down to ACL‘s since training camp. That’s an alarming number.

Last time dallas went to the super bowl the started with Deion on one side and Kevin smith on the other.. Smith tore his ACL and Brown played the season … right to Super Bowl MVP

If Diggs is only major injury we have on defense then we can probably overcome .

But it’s only week 3 , there is likely more to come .

Last year we lost both our starting CB’s. What if the next injury is like Lawrence or Parsons .

This is why you cant talk SB or whatever hype until you make it to January cause we don’t know until then who survives the season and what kind of team we’ll have .

exactly. Usually, the team that out executes the other wins the game. This includes limiting flags and moving the chains, eating time. In December, those teams are harder to beat.

It may be better that it happened so early in the season to give Bland a bigger chance to adjust his game outside, Lew to get his footing going and DQ to scheme how we are playing in the backside without 7. Imagine if this happens on the last Game of the season or worst in the playoffs.

At this point its not about being fine, its about winning a SB.

I always refer back to the dolphins undefeated season...most people don't realize that one Mr Earl Morrall (sp?) actually was the QB for at least half the games that year.

Mr Griese gets the accolades.

Mr Bland will do fine

Go Cowboys!

I hear you Greggo. I’m not saying “Super Bowl here we come”….I’m just saying all great teams have adversity to overcome. There is no completely smooth path to a Lombardi. So many of our young fans have no memories of a SB run in their lifetime. Many feel like ”it’s over” when a big injury hits.

You can't downplay the loss of a #1 corner in today's league. I'm not even the biggest Diggs fan. It's going to hurt and can end up being a factor in a game that we could have won but don't.
