SB/Conf champion winners who had major injuries but did NOT have a HOF QB:
  • 1985 Bears- lost 2 starters on their vaunted defense and won with non HOF Jim McMahon at QB.
  • 1990 giants- lost starting QB Phil Simms to injury and won the SB with backup QB Jeff Hostetler. Neither QB was a HOFer.
  • 1991 Wash team- won a SB missing starting RB, 2 OL and Mark Rypien at QB. Not a HOFer.
  • 2000 Ravens- won SB with a great D and non-HOFer QB Trent Dilfer.
  • 2003 panthers- won an NFC championship missing two OL starters and nearly beat the SB champ pats, losing 32-29 with non-HOFer Jake Delhomme at QB.
  • 2012 ravens- won SB with tons of injuries on both sides of the ball and won with non-HOFer Joe Flacco.
  • 2013 Seahawks- overcame injuries on OL and had non-HOFer (IMO) Russell Wilson at QB.
  • 2017 e-girls- won a SB with backup and Non-HOF QB Nick Foles and several key starters injured.
Its clear. Nice to have a HOF QB. Many SBs are won by HOF QBs. But it’s an excuse to act like not having a HOF QB or some injuries kills your chances.
To compare to recent times rather than going back 30 years

The Ravens went 10-6 in 2012. This was after back to back 12-4 seasons. Everyone knows getting hot at the right time can often lead to a deep playoff run or a Superbowl win (Giants did this twice) - the problem is can you overcome injuries enough during the season to actually get to the dance?

As for the 2013 Seahawks, they were loaded with depth. Even after injuries, they still had the legion of boom which is the top defensive group of the 2010s. E-girls are an outlier, they lost Wentz and Foles got streaky like he did in 2013. I just don't think this team has the depth. We can survive without Diggs sure, but a few more injuries and things will start to impact us on the field greatly.

The Giants, Packers, Pats and Saints had Hall of Fame QBs.
And the Giants had by far the world's most gigantic horseshoe up their buttes the sports gods ever decided to bestow on a team.

Sports Gods: "hmmmmm.....look at that Peyton Manning's dim witted, slow, goofy looking brother who turtles in the fetal position whenever anyone gets near him, and lives off the name of his father and HOF brother. I know....let's let him beat Tom Brady's 18-0 team. Ha ha...that will be funny"

Yes, I mentioned the 2012 ravens in an earlier response.

And I agree losing multiple star players for the season- like Diggs - can derail a season. Most teams will have some starters miss games without missing the whole season.

Depth should allow a good team to make it through a starter missing 2-5 games. When a starter, especially a star player, misses more than a few games, it can have a major drag on the season.

It requires a mental toughness not every team possesses to endure the marathon of an NFL season and remain in contention. Being hot at the right time, along with being mentally and physically tough are all huge factors in playoff success. Those qualities have somehow eluded the Cowboys for over two and a half decades.

History shows that you didn’t need a Hall of Fame QB decades ago, because everything revolved around running the ball and playing great defense. However, these days a QB has to play outstanding in the playoffs and Super Bowl to win a championship. Times have changed and the NFL is a QB driven league, which is why QBs salaries have skyrocketed. A lot more has been put on the plates of QBs. Their play influences the outcome of games more than ever. This is why they’re always being named league MVP. Just about every Super Bowl these days comes down to a QB having to make plays to win. Most Super Bowl MVPs are QBs. So much of a team success is dependent on their QB. Losing Trevon Diggs is a blow, and I agree it doesn’t have to be a knockout blow. We just have to hope we don’t suffer anymore season ending injuries to key players. We’ve had four players go down to ACL‘s since training camp. That’s an alarming number.
True... and since we dont have a Mahomes or Brady or Rogers etc at QB, we will be relying on our defense to win a SB.

The Chiefs can lose Chris Jones and still win a SB. We can NOT lose defensive stars and hope to win. We are a bit like SF. They can't survive if their RBs, OTs, wrs or pass rushers go down....they don't have a Mahomes either.

I THINK we can survive this....but we essentially need to be injury free on defense here on out....or else we're in trouble. P.S. I did NOT mention anyone rhyming with Yak in this post.

Yeah, you either need a top 5 QB or a QB to get streaky like Eli, Flacco, and Foles did. Dak hasn't shown he can elevate his game in the playoffs yet. That's the worrisome part.

Thanks @Bobhaze for threads like this. I think the shock of waking up on Thursday afternoon(I work 2nd shift) and seeing Diggs tore his ACL was devastating. Now that the shock has worn off it’s easier to be more rational. At first I was doom and gloom but with threads like this that show facts help temper down the emotions.

I hear you Greggo. I’m not saying “Super Bowl here we come”….I’m just saying all great teams have adversity to overcome. There is no completely smooth path to a Lombardi. So many of our young fans have no memories of a SB run in their lifetime. Many feel like ”it’s over” when a big injury hits.
I hear ya . Diggs isn’t even really a big injury. Parsons or our QB would be . Those we probably don’t overcome .

He is a great player, but let’s keep perspective. Dude has 1 Int and 1 forced fumble. We will be fine. We are deep at cb. Everyone needs to stop acting like Garrett is coaching this team. Those days of one injury sinking the season are over. Mike is a winner, won with a a backup qb last year and this team is tough as nails!

Go cowboys!
1 interception and 1 forced fumble do not show how much of an impact he made. Teams were not throwing his way often. That doesn't mean the defense isn't good enough to overcome his injury, but I don't think that's a reason to downplay his impact.

The way the rules are these days you can’t totally rely on your defense to win a Super Bowl. Too many of the rules favor the offense. Championships still come down to your QB. Once Brock Purdy got injured against Philly in the playoffs that was the end for San Francisco despite how good their defense is. Everyone including your QB has to take it up a notch in the playoffs. I’m not saying you need a Hall of Fame QB to win a Super Bowl but your QB has to play at a very high-level in postseason to have a chance.

I can think of at least 10 other starters which I’d hate to lose more.

Yes but we have seen some generational defenses carry the load.

This defense is looking like potentially one of those especially if Parsons continues at MVP level. Our QB and offense would be enough if just didn’t lose the game for us.

I always refer back to the dolphins undefeated season...most people don't realize that one Mr Earl Morrall (sp?) actually was the QB for at least half the games that year.

Mr Griese gets the accolades.

Mr Bland will do fine

Go Cowboys!
Earl Morrall was a seasoned veteran QB. He led the Colts to SBV when Unitas was down. And was NFL MVP in 1968 leading Colts to SB 3.

Not a good example .

Chances are now much lower for a special season. It is what it is.
Definitely wouldn’t say “ much lower”. There’s probably at least 10 other starters I’d hate to lose more.

Diggs is probably over hyped anyway. Take away one big season of interceptions and we probably over paid him.

No I agree with you. You can't build ur team around defense as a permanentphilosophy....due to rules AND the salary cap. A GREAT defense needs so many great players. At least a couple awesome pass rushers...a good LB or 2. .and at least 2 really good DBs. And then you need pretty good players to fill out ur defense at the other spots....you can't have any weak links.

You can maybe win a SB ONE year like that maybe...but then all those individual good pieces want to get PAID...and it falls apart.

When u get that Mahomes....you pay him a kings ransom....and you can fill in around him year after year with just nice professional players, and your playing deep into the playoffs year after year for a dozen straight years....or more!

Until we win the NFC championship game, everyone needs to quit talking about super bowls.
