Let's stop for a minute and think about this. First of all let's name the teams drafting ahead of us who need a QB.
1. Carolina
3. Buffalo
4. Cincinnati
5. Arizona
7. San Francisco?
Now, who are the teams behind us who may want to trade up?
10. Washington
12. Vikings
16. Jaguars?
Now, why am I concentrating on just QBs right now? Easy answer, these teams are going to be under the most intense pressure in NFL History to take a QB in round 1 of the lockout lasts past the Draft.
When will Free Agency start? How long will the lockout last? If the lockout lasts to the Draft there is no way that teams can gamble and not take a QB.
Please think about that for a minute. As long as the lockout is in place no team can trade for a QB like Carson Palmer or Kevin Kolb. No team can sign a Free Agent QB like Matt Hasselbeck.
Right now, I am pro-lockout for that reason alone. I want the intense pressure placed upon the teams ahead of us. If it is, then we benefit big time about great players dropping.
Do teams know when the lockout will end? No more than you or I do. Can they gamble it will end before they have to go into a season with no solution in place at QB?
In my not so humble opinion, no, they cannot risk that. Two QBs are deemed to be 1st round guys. I will not be shocked if 3, 4, 5, or even 6 or 7 guys are taken at QB in round 1. I don't think teams can gamble on getting a position player in round 1, and their QB in round 2. I think there will be a feeding frenzy on QBs.
Further, these teams cannot afford to trade down if they need a QB. No amount of picks is worth missing a QB they want or worse, need.
Can Arizona or Cincy Trade down? Not in my opinion. If Newton and Gabbart are gone they may need to strike while the iron is hot and take Mallet, Locker, or someone else.
It could happen.
We may be in the most advantageous position ever to have a player we covet fall right in our laps. I have not wavered one iota on my belief that Patrick Peterson is the best player in this draft.
NFL History also tells us that CBs are not taken in the top 5 of the Draft very often. No CB has ever been #1 overall. Not in 75 years of Drafting. In fact, no CB has ever been #2 overall. Not in 75 years of Drafting. Only 2 have ever been #3 overall.
I find it hard to believe that Denver, the team with the fewest sacks in the NFL is going to pass on D-line. I just can't see it.
If Peterson gets to #6, and I absolutely believe he can, Jerry will go get him. If it happens, I promise, I will tone down my Peterson agenda just like I did my Garrett agenda.
In the meantime though...
