Well, and they do need to gel quickly with the early schedule we have. But I think if they can at least knock the ball loose more frequently, that should help.

I mean, compared to last year, I don't think it was quite as bad lol. Tbf, I should make it clear I was more referring to the run d. Hey, a slight improvement is an improvement lol. But yeah, more seriously, I think most of the time, at least when it came to the run, it wasn't a lack of control. I just think we weren't physical enough that game. That's fixable imo, and I think if they can force more fumbles, at least that helps lessen problems we have on that side. As for the coverage issues, that's one area I expect Parker to be able to fix.
 
Only thing I saw that i liked about this defense is when they walked off the field into the locker room.

Did you see any of the Dart runs to the edges? Just watch the first two plays. They are entirely blown assignments.

I also thought we were incredibly unlucky with where the ball wound up after Downs clobbered Dart. That's one that, on another night, we probably intercept.

So, while there's rightfully a lot of negativity towards the way the defence looked, I do think they got a little unlucky with some of the bounces on the fumbles/loose balls, and I do want, as a fan, to encourage the team to keep attacking the ball. We don't need them to become the Doomsday D yet. We just need them to attack the ball and get in position to recover the ball when the ball pops loose. And I hope we send more blitzes with Downs. That hit on Dart was beautiful. We need to do that more.

I wasn’t happy with the defensive results in several respects:

1. Failure to get stops and force punts.
2. Coverage and assignment breakdowns
3. Failure to stop the inside runs

In fairness, that list could be really long.

You can tell that there has been improvement in parts of the defense but that’s overshadowed due to coverage and assignment breakdowns and lapses.

If you have 9 or 10 guys doing what they are supposed to do and 1 or 2 that are not performing their job, then the entire defense fails. I haven’t rewatched the game, but I think there was a lot of this happening through out the game.

There was failure to contain on the edge and set the edge all night. That is fixable.

There were lapses in coverage assignments on defense. That is fixable.

I said prior to the season the success or failure of this defense may be unfairly placed on the play of a single player, more than any other, and that’s Barham. He’s the one player that if he plays well, he elevates this entire defense. If he does not, I don’t see much hope for the linebackers.

If Barham is out we do not have enough size at linebacker. And the rest of the linebackers should ideally depth players, not starters.

I’m not giving up on this defense yet. I think Parker will get these guys playing better as a unit. But I still think Jerry will have to go and get another linebacker with some size (thumper) to help out the run defense.

Well, and that's the thing. I think it's going to take some time. I like what you're saying about needing another linebacker, ideally a physical one. I wonder who we can pluck from another practice squad? I think they should be getting the ball knocked out, but I think we need a physical LB too.

I’m not a fan of retreads but Bobby Wagner might be a possibility there.

Three forced fumbles and a couple of near interceptions suggests the guys were at least making some plays instead of just getting completely dominated.

Obviously, turnovers alone don't fix the problems we saw, especially giving up way too many third-down conversions. But if they can clean up the communication and tackling while continuing to create that kind of pressure on the ball, the defense has something to build on.

You have to find the little positives after a game like that. :thumbup:

I've been quiet this week just reading the posts on the board.
People "quitting" the team and the general "the sky is falling" overreaction to the loss.
I never bought into the hype that we were a great team.
I think we are a work in progress.

I'm disappointed by the loss but I also thing the Giants are pretty solid. They had a great off season. I think Harbaugh is a great coach for them. They finally got it right in my opinion.

Maybe it's because I'm older, but I know that the Giants are a top organization, they've just been down for a while now. I think younger fans think they are a bad org, like the Jets. They are not. They found their franchise QB, and he's a good one. Nabers is a top WR, and I love the way Scat plays the game. They invested heavily in their Oline (Mauigoa is a monster and Thomas is a fine T) and Likely was a huge signing. I was surprised the Ravens chose to resign Andrews over him.

Their DLine is good and Carter was amazing. He honestly looked a lot like prime Micah against us. Their LBs are outstanding.
I enjoyed Mike Tomlin's commentary after the game, saying "I've seen this before" take. The Harbaugh Giants dominate the LOS on both sides of the ball and are very physical. They run the ball well, just like the Ravens the last decade.
Going into the season I felt they would be much improved.
It was also a very emotional game, with the 9/11 tribute and the game being in NY. I never thought it was an automatic win like many obviously did.

On the bright side, I think we have some really good young players. I've always thought Downs was special. EZ played a nice game and showed some disruption. He still has a ways to go but he could be really good. We need to see how CP integrates Lawrence and Barham and our CBs need some work.
I was disappointed in our DTs. Where was Q and Clark? They got pushed back by the Giants IOL.
Also our LBs are not very good, and that's on the front office.
Free agency was deep at LB, and we did nothing.
Relying on Overshown to be your Mike is madness. He's not a Mike LB, he is better suited to OLB or Wil. Winters is not the answer, more like a solid depth piece.
I wanted Nakobe or at least Chanel, and we could have afforded them, yet we did nothing.
IDLine needs to step up, Safety's look improved, CB's can improve with better DLine play. LB is an issue., let's see how CP integrates Barham.
I like CP, though he got out coached. He will improve, as will the defense.

That's the thing. I don't know how deep we will go this year. This year might be a building year for this D as it's going to take some time to get it right. But I do think it'll get there.

Good call. Wagner and Von can kind of be CPs coaches on the field. Teach the young kids how to be pros.
We definitely need help at ILB and we need a true MLB.
I'll say another thing, the East is wide open this year.

The Gmen are obviously improved, which I expected, but they are by no means a great team.

I watched the Eagles/Commanders and wasn't;t impressed with either. They are solid, but not outstanding.

Even though the Eagles won and Hurts played well, that OL is not what it used to be. Even Lane got beat and Dickerson was horrible. Jergens and Sheen are average. Mialata is solid/good but he is not prime Lane and I think prime Lane no longer exists.
They will not be able to dominate front 7s like they used to, and that means no reliable running game and having to rely on Hurts to win games. He won this one but against a better team he will struggle.

So I think the East is wide open.
We just need to steadily improve and hang around and we could end up in the playoffs if we hit stride late in the season.

And that's the thing imo. This defence is filled with a lot of young players. They do have the potential to become good. But, sometimes a coach needs a few veterans to help instill the culture he wants to build. So, Wagner and Miller would be great to help the linebackers become a better unit, and help the young linebackers learn better.

We don’t need to coach on the field, we need to coach at practice
Veteran support, is a huge advantage. I guarantee that and I agree with that.
But you don’t want them telling the people what to do before the play that’s the captain that’s the middle linebacker job
