They were close to a nice offseason

When you look at the draft in a vacuum, I have no real issues. I am a Brugler guy and I think we ended up with three of his Top 50 after three rounds. After that, it's always a crap shoot in the later rounds so maybe we hit on a few, maybe we bombed out. The draft will be largely decided by what the first three picks do and I think they are nice selections.

But when you zoom out and put the draft in the context of the entire offseason, it's hard to get excited. Putting aside the fact that we hired a guy that no one ever deemed worthy of a HC gig despite the family name and being in coaching for years, the draft highlights the shortcomings of our FA plan.

We still have needs at WR (sorry, I am not buying Mingo as a viable #2 at this point). We have a need at DT (it's a wasteland again outside of Odi). We could have used a talented back. And all of those could have been addressed in the draft but if they had been, then we would have holes at the interior OL, DL, CB, etc.

When you refuse to fill legitimate holes with players that can actually fill those holes with quality play, you get what we've gotten the last who knows how many years.

We sign reclamation projects and washed up players because they are cheap. Williams at TB? Great, he was once a high pick but has done nothing in the league. I'd rather spent the money on JK Dobbins, who yes, has an injury history but has also been far more productive than Williams. Thomas at DT? Oh, he played for Eberflus? Great. He's been mediocre and can't stop the run. Poona Ford was out there and signed a pretty reasonable deal with a small signing bonus and only $15MM guaranteed over 3 years.

Imagine pairing this draft class with a FA class that was highlighted by Ford, Dobbins and maybe even Keenan Allen to be a #2. And they absolutely could have afforded all three if they wanted.
Good post. This team had way too many holes entering the off season. They have filled some for sure but they have a huge hole at WR, DT, safety and linebacker. Not to mention they have two corners that will probably start on the pup list. If they try to sell us on Mingo and Tolbert and don’t do anything then it’s more of the same from the Jones boys. That’s is a glaring weakness that they have done nothing about so far. God forbid if Lamb goes down.

I guess if they sit tight with what they have at WR then this is somewhat of a failed off season. We shouldn’t be showering the Jones boys for just the draft and signing some reclamation projects.

Like Jazzcat2 said , it really has been a pretty good off-season. Like it or not, since all our opinions as well as theirs is relative, they set out and got the guys they felt they wanted and can perform for them.
The draft, if you hit on 3 players the draft would be considered very much a golden one. I don't see why we won't get at least that but obviously we have no choice but to wait and see.
My point is we all knew they couldn't fix everything in one off season. So no matter how much we thought they could do would be possible to fill all the needs has in one off-season. But I do believe they did good to me feel a lot of them. Will they miss on some of course they will it's part of the game.

Totally disagree.

Jerry fully explained himself why the Cowboys waited until the 5th round to draft Jaydon Blue.

Here you go...

Thread 'Post - Draft Press Conference' https://cowboyszone.com/threads/post-draft-press-conference.534591/
Under the circumstances what is Jerry Jones, or any other GM, supposed to say about a player selected in the 5th round? Every NFL team’s ownership group and/or GM recites whatever they think best sells their draft decision(s) to their fanbase.

All 32 NFL franchises are speaking well of all the guys they drafted right now.

You say this like you knew what his aspirations were prior to getting hired as the HC. Is this your opinion or is your statement factual?

Bull. Poppycock.

Jerry had very few draft picks, especially in the early rounds. He knew this draft had lots of running backs, plus he knew Jaydon Blue would most likely drop because of his lesser rushing total numbers compared to other running backs taken earlier. He also understood WHY Jaydon Blue had lesser total rushing numbers, but as Jerry said, Will McClay had been hammering to him since 7 days before the draft that Jaydon Blue would likely drop but to make sure and get him. Jerry and his front office outsmarted other teams by waiting to get Jaydon Blue in the 5th. Just watch. Jaydon Blue is going to prove he was a steal so late in this draft.

No. Disagree.

What is the reason Blue went in the later rounds? Let's hear it...
Size for one. He's likely not a 20 carry a game guy. He's more of a 10 carry guy and then also utilize him in the passing game. He also struggles in pass protection which makes him difficult to play significant snaps. He also had a fumbling problem in college.

Don't get me wrong, he absolutely can carve out a niche for himself in Dallas but he's not the solution to our TB woes either.

He very well may end up being a good player for us. I like the pick. If I were Vaughn, I'd be nervous. But his role is likely that of a #2 type TB, not a guy in the mold of Barkley or Henry or Robinson or Jacobs. Those are guys you know you want to get 275-330 carries a season. That's likely not Blue. He's probably a 150 carries a game type who also is used a lot in the passing game as a receiver out of the backfield who can also split wide a bit.

Agree on the reclamation project crap….shows Jerry and crews arrogance like with so many other things….they think they can make these players play like the first rounders they were selected as even though they have been garbage elsewhere. Just like with signing injured players thinking “hehehe, got them a little cheaper, they will come back great and be value” but they end up being bad after coming back from injury….it doesn’t pan out.

Jaydon Blue is another Tony Pollard but slightly faster. Blue was never meant to be a 3 down RB, so you guys need to get that out of your heads. I know y'all prefer a 3-down RB bruiser with speed, but that type of RB is very rare nowadays. Jaydon Blue will do very well teamed up with Phil Mafah. Thunder (Mafah) and Lightning (Blue). Very similar in style and use like Robert Newhouse and Tony Dorsett.

So you agree with me. Blue isn't an every down back.

PS - The problem with your Newhouse Dorsett comparison is neither Blue or Mafah come close to projecting to be the type of impactful back Dorsett was. Mafah might just end up as a practice squad guy.

No one that follows the NFL to any degree believes Jerry Jones and Will McClay can outsmart any other team’s front office. Where was all their intelligence when they were negotiating with Dak Prescott? Did their comparable brilliance show up when they addressed the running back position last off season?

We all get Barkley and Henry have restored the running back position to distinction. Thinking you’ve captured lightening in a bottle with one you found 5th round of the draft is how you end up in 3rd or 4th place. Did Blue do anything Deuce didn’t do in college ball? All NFL fans are addicted to hopeium this time of year. It’s part of the fun. Don’t OD on it.

Pretty much this. I think Blue is going to be a good back, but its TBD on how much of an impact he can have as a situational player and how much of a role he can carve out year 1. Mafah seems to be a pretty strict between the tackle bulldozer.

Good chance both these guys see minimal touches compared to Williams who isnt great at anything, but the most complete back on the roster right now.

What do you have an issue with?

You admit Blue isn't an every down back. You tried to say our rookie tandem is in the mold of Newhouse, Dorsett, which is kind of laughable at this point. And the one back Mafah, likely is on the outside looking in at a 53 man roster spot anyway. Unless you think Jerry and Stephen are going to toss both Williams and Sanders aside after selling them as important offseason acquisitions.

All would have been better if they had signed Dobbins

Then you have Dobbins, Blue and then you can find another cheap vet back with Mafah as a practice squad guy.

Definitely concerned about the overall roster still. If we still can't stop the run, and can't score in the red zone, it'll be a repeat of previous years. They've added some nice pieces but have to put their foot on the gas and keep filling holes.
