Things that are bothering me

I'm not sure I get where all the "Jerry should play hardball with Romo!!!" talk even comes from.
  1. The Cowboys want Romo off their salary cap books.
  2. Romo wants to get off the Cowboys roster so he can start somewhere.
  3. These goals overlap.
I mean, I can make up a hypothetical where football Siberia sends the Cowboys 3 first rounders and the Texans offer a bag of peanuts, sure - but that's just something I made up literally moments ago. There is no evidence that it's real. What is much more likely is the Cowboys get similar offers they can play off each other and there is ultimately little difference between them. Or all the offers are bad, and it's unclear if it's substantively more valuable than just releasing him when it suits them best. In that scenario it costs the Cowboys basically nothing, or close to it, to give Romo exactly what he wants.

2017 Cap hit will 19.7 (or so) whether its a trade or pre June 1 release
But with a post June 1 release the 2017 hit can 10.1 and 8.6 is pushed i to 2018....so it can be greatly reduced in 2017

Overall, the toal cap hits the same though

Depends on if that team offering the pick is one that Romo would want to play. I think you underestimate the loyalty factor here with Jones. I don't believe it's beyond impossible that Jones could turn down an offer for Romo via trade in order to do right by Romo and allow him to pick the team he goes to.

What teams are seeking Romo that Tony wouldn't want to play for?

Romo's age and health concerns limit him to a brief and precarious window. The only teams that will want Romo are top tier teams that need a QB to take them over the top. Of course Jerry won't trade Romo to the Skins, but Romo would happily play for the Texans, Broncos, Chiefs...maybe Vikings. Maybe Jacksonville, who many feel would be playoff bound with a good signal caller.

Where are the suitors? Where are the trade offers?

Why would a team try to trade for Romo, while knowing that Romo doesn't want to play for them?

Seems like people are vilifying Romo for something that's unlikely to even be a real thing.

How about Mike Glennon about to make 15+ mil per year?? That should bother everyone.

For anyone who thinks that cutting Romo post June 1 effects our FA spending this year doesn't understand how that works. We don't get the cap space till after June 1, and would mostly be used to sign the draft picks and serve as the in season buffer while counting still against next year.

I know it sucks to only get 5.1 million, but I think as a team, they're better off cutting/trading Romo normally and having his money off the books for the future then trying to spread it out. IIRC you double the free space you'd get this year, after June 1, but at the cost of around 10 million off of next years cap. Both options suck, but I still think take the pill now and let it settle.

10.7+5.7+3.2 = 19.6 all n 2017......if trade or pre-June 1
or
10.7 in 2017 + 8.9 in 2018...if post June 1

A ton of players where signed after June 1 last year. It's only a month after the draft ad 3 months before the real season. Freeny went to Atlanta for example.
But yes, that extra 8.9 wouldn't be availbale toward a big fish. Then again, we don't go for the big fish usually anyway.

I guess the question is if the offers were only in the 4th or 5th round range, would the team prefer to have 8.9 mil extra available in 2017? I don't know.

We don't have to call another team's bluff. We have to call Tony Romo's. If he threatens retirement so be it. Won't he come off the books then? If he wants to get paid, he will play where he gets traded. Now, we can try to get him to a good team if we're being nice. It's a business.

I'm sure there are multiple teams he would play for. Either Romo wants to play or he doesn't. The more I think about it though I think it would be dumb to let him walk for nothing

Call his bluff and just not suit him out every week. I doubt Jerry would go that route.

The Cowboys don't get to decide what trade offers they get.

The Cowboys want to get Romo off their salary cap books, they aren't going to pay him to not play just to spite him.

So you then trade him for a future conditional pick

I was going to pass on your irritations till" ole drop foot".

So:[1] Romo for nothing chicks for free [sorry had to] that one just makes sense. If JJones can get picks he'll take em. He's already said "whats good for the team and Romo"?
[2] Some fans want immediate gratification. The team did the big bucks FA for years with dicey results. JJones changed his philosophy. Build correctly through the draft.
Sometimes big bucks FA work out the percentage isn't a good betting wager in the long run.
[3] "ole drop foot" will be a steal IMO the red shirt rookie season was the price we paid for a player we other wise didn't have a chance to draft.
Others may say you don't know he'll recover from his injury. You buy your ticket you take your chances. I lime these odds.

Trade Romo for a conditional future 2nd round pick or so. If he retires, it's no different than cutting him.

It's the 1st week in March.

How are people getting bothered or upset by things that haven't even happened?

As far as I know we haven't released Romo, Jaylon hasn't retired, and we haven't wasted our 2017 1st round pick.

I'll wait and see.
it's the stories in their head that drive them crazy

It is simple, the jones boys have not done well in FA, but they have done good in the draft, so they
want to stick with whats working.
I agree with the op, better to get 1 good player than 4 avg players in FA, but look who is shopping lol.

About romo, no telling what happens there.
