Every year at the end of December, it can be a good practice to reflect on what you learned this past 365 days. It’s even more fun when reflecting on what we learned about the Dallas Cowboys in 2024. (Although some of it we’ve probably known for years!)

So here’s my list of the things we learned about the Cowboys in 2024, in no particular order of importance:
  • In January, 2024, we learned courtesy of the packers that the 2023 version of the Cowboys were not as good as we thought.
  • We learned that Jerry and Stephen Jones think Cowboys fans are stupid. Their absolutely false explanation (over and over) of “why we can’t afford any free agents” was so full of lies, it was almost comedic.
  • We learned that DeMarvion Overshown is the real deal. If he can ever get healthy and stay healthy, we have a defensive star.
  • We learned that Brandon Aubrey is clearly the best and most consistent player we have.
  • We learned Rico Dowdle is way better than Zeke Elliott, although our GM apparently hasn‘t seen that yet. (Almost any RB in the NFL at this point is significantly better than Zeke)
  • We learned that second year TE Luke Schoonmaker does indeed have a pulse.
  • We have been reminded again in 2024 that the Cowboys can beat bad teams but not so much the good ones.
  • We were reminded again after another bad sunlight moment that cost us a TD that Jerry Jones cares way more stadium aesthetics than he does about giving his team the best chance to win.
There are more for sure. So what did you learn about the Cowboys in 2024?

Parsons is their best player.

We learned the Cowboys are once again married to Dak Prescott for another 4 years and we also learned that the front office simply doesn't care about improving or winning playoff games. We also learned that free agency only exists for 31 other teams. March doesn't mean anything around here but vacation time for the Jones family.

.... I learned that Zimmer reminds me of Marinelli. They are both old dogs who dont quite understand modern football, which is bizzare.

No matter what type of team McCarthy gets. The turnout will be same. Just doesn't know HOW to win, when it counts.

That bad luck is similar to domino effect. Dallas got lots of it this year.

Hopefully, better luck in 25'.

I hate to be negative after 40 years, but here we are. I am at the point of not giving a crap if this team wins or loses. No need to look further than our crackhead ownership team who have managed to disenfranchise me. I have over the years kept looking for signs of change, when I now realize more than ever that there is no end in sight, so the investment of the teams success is negligible

Answer: Their owner/GM utilizes players' top-tier contract signings strictly and transparently as publicity vehicles. In the end, Jerry Jones 'hardline' negotiating, with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, was a complete and utter sham.

Sadly I think a lot of fans are getting this message from Jerry and company, even sadder is he don't care at all.

Cowboys are a circus not a football team

The owner is the biggest POC owner in sports and a complete football idiot

Mccarthy lied to get the Cowboys job for money

Dak and Diggs are only and only about money

Parsons is TO 2.0. A great player who is a media sponge and will never be worth what he will be paid

A lot of Cowboys fans (yes, even so called die hard ones) either dont pay attention or don’t understand winning football or have the intelligence of a 5th grader

Another example of the Jones FO thinking the fan base is stupid. Both contracts could have and should have been done in the spring but our owner likes writing his own script even if it ends in losing every time. He would rather do things his way and lose than change and win.

I learned that Mike McCarthy, despite all of his warts, is a leader of men and a very good football coach.

Jerry and Stephen Jones intentionally gave him one of the worst rosters they could and he would be 7-7 right now if a player just called up to the active roster doesn't make a mistake in the Cincinnati game.

That is without the highest paid QB in the League and a rash of injuries to key players on the roster. His team hasn't quit on him and they play hard.

Red Zone

For the season, the Cowboys have scored touchdowns on 47.5% of their redzone trips, good for 28th in the league. Over the last three games however, that number is up to 58.3%, which is 14th in the NFL amongst the rest of the field in that time span. I think the biggest reason for that is that the Cowboys have finally established a run game that defenses have to focus attention to.

Rico Dowdle has only scored one rushing touchdown this season, but the threat of him being able to break open an explosive play has lead defenses to leave one or two extra defenders in the box, opening things up for Dallas' receivers to get their touchdowns as showcased against the Panthers. Aside from the obvious of scoring at a higher clip, the Cowboys can do better by continuing to lean on that run game and get Dowdle into the endzone a few more times too.

Starting Sunday night we all will see just how improved the whole team, including staff, just really have progressed into the present.

We learned not to like the Cowboys anymore. While it’s been going on for 30 years this year pushed more fans than any I can remember to the brink.
