Thinking About That Denver Game

I hate rehashing these types of memories, but was thinking about a passing play we ran way too much during that game... I believe it was QB obtion play where Bledsoe could either hand off to the back or quickstep back and fire out to a receiver that was usually one-on-one with the cornerback...

I used to hope to never see that play again after that game, but with the addition of Owens, I believe that this play would start to have some potential to do really well for us. Keyshawn did a fairly decent job with it, but it didn't work so hot for Glenn on that last offensive series.

If Owens is matched up against an isolated corner (possibly undersized or unexperienced), I will take my bets on him winning that matchup many times for us.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Owens took one ninty yards or so versus Champ Bailey on a similar play I believe.

We didn't lose because of those passing plays ... our supposed future Pro Bowl LB Bradie James blew two HUGE assignments which allowed the Denver RB's to break HUGE gains. The final one cost us the game.

I thought we lost because our FG kicker sucked. If we would have had Vandy we would have won that game.

It wasn't my intention to express that in my post, there were a number of reasons why we lost that game even though we played really well. I just know that we ran that play a number of times and when we pulled it out on the last offensive series again, it didn't take anyone by suprise

Or because Cundiff sucks, Bledsoe threw high, Campbell didn't make an attempt on it, and Newman dropped an INT.

Take your pick.

Don't be surprised to see us start running a few more WR screens (to Green) that Moss and Smith had so much success with last year either. Those guys made that play work because they are excellent at making quick moves in traffic, before the linebackers can get a good angle of pursuit. With Green's open field moves that he has honed in the punt return game, he could thrive with that type of play.

I can see Green becoming a Randle-El like player for you, didn't Parcells tell him to strengthen his arm?

They might do it next year since Owens is so good at the YAC department. However, they did it in that game mainly because Darient Williams can't tackle.

Yes! Denver was a quality team who played in the AFC Championship game last year. The Cowboys really were the better team that day, barring a few botched plays on defense they really dominated the Broncos that day.

But the obvious reason for the loss was Cundiff blowing an easy kick late in the fourth quarter. If he nails that kick (and, by the way, Vanderjagt simply does not miss these kicks), the Cowboys win the game.

The Cowboys didn't need Owens to win that game. He will just make them even that much better.

he did say that and at the time I thought it was kinda tongue in cheek but now I am wondering. those gimmicky plays are fun, what I don't understand is Crayton is a former QB so why haven't we used it at all

No no. We were tied during Denver's final drive of regulation. Had Cundiff made that FG, we'd have been up by 3, and Denver would have been forced to go for it on 4th down instead of punting.

So you never know. Denver punted with the score tied. Had they been down by 3, they would have gone for it on 4th.

Who's to know what would have happened after that?

But you're right, we would have had the inside track to winning. But not guaranteed.

that type of play is not suited for Glenn and either are those short routes at the goal line we tried last year. He's small and its easy to jar the ball lose or reach around.

Those types of plays will work well with Owens... also having fasono, witten and owens in together as receiving threats when the team is inside the 10 yard line, how nice is that going to be !!!

I'm trying to remember the Denver game but I all I see is Santana Moss burning us deep twice in the last three minutes back in Week 2. Sorry...

True. But if we had a decent kicker, all that would have been forgotten.

That should never have happened. Actually, Santana Moss wasn't the one who beat us ... Greg Williams outcoached us. We were killing them, and it should have been over a long time ago. But Williams D kept them in the game, and voila, two deep ones and game over.

Eddie, I take it you're not a huge Bradie James fan?

It was tongue in cheek. Too many peeps ready to put him in the Pro Bowl (reminds me of all those Pro Bowl predictions for Al Johnson after the 2003 season).

I like Bradie, but he blew some big wads in the Denver game.

Ahhhh I see... Yeah I knew you were just playin around with the "future pro bowl" line, but I wasn't sure if you meant you didn't think he was going to be a good player, or if you were taking a shot at all the other posters with the mancrush for Bradie.

See AFC Championship against Steelers.

By the way guys. I think these Cundiff and Bradie James conversations are real pertinent to the original topic. You guys remember that? It was the one about TO and WR screens and TO's matchup against corners...not about why we lost. Are ya'll ADD? You can't even stay on topic. Goodness.

But just ignore me. It's all tongue in cheek anyway.
