Thinking Spencer, post draft

How does the fact that the Cowboys drafted no defensive ends affect the thinking about signing Spencer for a multi-year contract? Is the team in worse shape at the negotiating table now? If a deal's going to happen, by when will the Cowboys want it done?

My guess is that the draft could have impacted it but did not. Drafting Spencer's heir apparant could have shifted the tide towards just letting him play out his franchise tag.

As it stands, I think guys like Crawford, Wilbur, Albright and maybe even Hatcher might impact this situation going forward if one of them shows that they can handle Spencer's duties next year.

Obviously we could also draft an edge rusher next year with a premium pick and he might also become expendable in that event as well.

Sign him to a backloaded 5 yr deal and make his final year or 2 minimal cap hit if released

They also have FA but I don't think they will bring in a DE but use who they have.

i think had we drafted a de would have meant they were way to far apart. the fact they did'nt seems to indicate they are'nt too far apart, or they think they can draft his replacement next year which is a big risk to me

The coaches think they have all the DL players in place to run the 4-3. But they want to see them play before they conclude that decisively. Where that leaves Spencer is with a 1-year deal to show what he brings to this 4-3. But won't show until into the season. If they like what they see I expect them to extend Spencer in mid-season.

I think it gives Spencer most of the leverage now. Absolutely convinced he will not sign for less than 10+ million a year. Huge fundamental mistake by Dallas to not take a single DT or DE in draft.

Not necessarily. If Spencer's demands are too high, then they could always go out and sign a very good FA, or use a high draft pick for his replacement.

Even if he wants 10/mil AAV, I wouldn't rule it out. They could always back load it.

I think 5/42 with a 17m signing bonus gets it done. salaries of 2,3,5,7,8

I'd considered they might have gone into the draft with at least a rough framework in place for a deal with Spencer, Moore, and, loosely, Clabo and Okoye. Knowing that things could break any number of ways and that we'd wait to pull a trigger.

Ideally, you'd like to wait until a bit into TC to extend Spencer. If you want the cap room, though, to do a deal with Moore or Clabo, you might consider doing it sooner if you're comfortable he'll make that transition well.

I'd bet Clabo is still too rich for our blood. And I think we're more interested in a veteran OG, anyway.

Had we resorted to a DE pick, depending on the player, it might well have been a different story for Spencer, but it looked like we might have been interested in Datone Jones among the DL options, right? And I imagine he'd be a 3-tech for us. I didn't see any hints that we had real interest in any of the major DE prospects, unless I'm forgetting someone.
