I see thread after thread about bad DEF so i decided to check on how bad this offense has been this yr. And theres a reason why this def is on the field so much. Well one because they cant stop anybody, just really gotten bad recently with all the injuries. But i decided to go thru all the game and see how many drives the Cowboys offense had failed to even get 15 yrds on a drive.

61 drives out of 142 drives have gained less than 15 yrds. That means 42% of the time Dallas has given the ball back to its opponents gaining virtually nothing and usually sent its DEF back out on the field in an avg time of 1min 45 sec of game play. Trust there is more than the DEF wrong with this team. And i think the DEF wouldnt be this bad if the OFF would give it time to rest during games.

Makes you feel good if something is on the line come week 17 doesnt it?

And the D hasn't given the ball back to the offense as well. When you go multiple games without forcing a punt, you're epically bad. That's a wart we just can't hide so there's little value in looking at a whole lot of other numbers (ie: defense).

So, the last three games, since Garrett took the offensive play-calling back, Dallas has 3, 4, & 3 drives (respectively) in which they gained 10 yards or less. In other words a "3 and out".

I don't have the stats in front of me, but I'd bet pretty good money that's right at, if not slightly better than, the league average. Most of your better teams still have a couple of 3 & outs per game.

How does this compare to the league average?

I have no idea theyre not really stats that cover this i dont think. But You have to think almost half of the drives in your season are ending in 1:45. Thats not good. And there was about 13 more drives that ended less than 20 yrds. Most of Dallas scoring drives have come right before the half and at the end of games. So basically the offense is sending the DEF back out on the field for bascially the whole game and survive with late scores before the halfs end

I don't know what the stats indicate, but it seems we went conservative to avoid putting our defense in bad field positions. Not that it seems to really have any kind of impact.

I'm glad somebody finally did this work. You can go back to Garrett during the Wade days and find the same trends. This offense has always been boom or bust. I use to say this all the time, especially between quarters two and three, three and outs were a staple of this offense, which always put pressure on this defense to hold down the fort, only to collapse at the end after Romo in up-tempo would finally force pace.

I just wish somebody crunched these numbers during those days, because it ain't new.

That wasn't true until recently. Dallas is among top ten for a majority of the season in turnovers. They were middle of the back in points scored, until recently. I think the numbers were heavily skewed in the latter because of the Saints and Bears, meaning last three games. It was yardage where they stunk, but they were still giving the ball back. I'm not sure how much TOP was a factor, but I don't think it was.

This defense is bad, but it's a scapegoat and masking the real systemic problem on this team for years since Garrett has been here. We've gone through 3 defensive coordinators with different philosophies, but not even once changed the offensive system and people say Garrett was hamstrung..... This system sucks...

I have no great love for Garrett, his offense or his coaching so don't take it that way. But this D's on pace to be the most horrific in the history of the NFL. It started bad with the Giants and continued with the Broncos, Chargers and Saints. It's far from a scapegoat.

When I say scapegoat, I mean it's taking focus away from what the real issue. We got street scrubs playing on the field, while the offense has no excuse. The defense also scored in Minnesota and the Giants game and these scores proved enough for the win. This isn't even accounting for TOs that put us in field position to score either a field goal or Tad without moving the ball effectively. We can count plenty of TOs. We are at 24 or 27 with 3 games left to play. We had 16 total last year.

Our points on offense, despite yardage given up by the defense, can partly be attributed to the defense.

What this says if this OFF has put the defense in a bad spot for the brunt of the game every week.

I don't think you can blame the defense on the offense. Each unit has a specific job. The defense clearly isn't doing their job. They're putting together one of the worst showings in the history of the NFL. But, yes, the offense has done them no favors by having a 3-and-out on 42% of drives. But that doesn't excuse the defense. This thread is about scapegoats. Saying the offense is hurting the defense is a contradiction to the meaning of this thread, since that would be using the offense as a scapegoat for the awful defensive performance. But I've been saying all year that the offense is underachieving. I think the biggest evidence is the fact that Dez doesn't seem to be the #1 option on passing plays. That and the fact that we either don't run the ball or abandon the run when it seems to be working. I think the offense's problem is a matter of scheme. The defense's problem is a whole mix of things.

Great information and not sure anybody has ever said it, but thanks for taking the time to provide solid data for everyone to discuss on the Zone. I always look forward to yours and a few other peoples post, they always are insightful, informational, and bring a lot of discussion to the Zone. It is so much better than the constant venting we see on many post's.

That being said, I have to ask the WHY question. Why has it changed? Why did it change? It just don't seem like this offense can sustain drives and score points when it needs to. It only looks good when Tony Romo is running the no-huddle or 2min offense. With that being said, I am not to fond of this new offense. All off season we kept hearing, they drafted Escobar to run more 21 set's and make the offense more like the Patriots. I really think someone in the Cowboys organization came up with a great idea to run a Patriots style offense with a Seahawks style defense and that concept has been a complete failure.

At the end of the day, things are pretty tough when we have to debate which side of the ball is worse.

What this says if this OFF has put the defense in a bad spot for the brunt of the game every week.

The defense isnt stopping anybody and it doesn't matter what part of the field the opposition starts on, so I don't think the offense is necessarily making things any worse for them. That being said, it's plain to anybody watching that the offense is severely dysfunctional and has been ever sense the Bronco game. Romo seems to avoid throwing anything deep and the play-calling/game plans are ludicrous. None of it makes any sense and it seems like there is something going on that the public doesn't know about. I understand that you should protect a weak defense by not putting them into bad situations by turning the ball over, but when your defense sucks this bad you really need to throw caution to the wind and try to score as many points as possible.... screw the turnovers, this defense isn't stopping any drives anyway!
