I've been a fan of this team since I was ten years old, in 1965. I've see the good, bad, & the ugly regarding their defense. Here is my take on the Cowboys the 2016 version after 11 games, in no particular order:

The DL:David Irving is our best DL, & at 6-7, 275, should be playing LDE. Ty Crawford is playing out of place due to the lack of depth at DE, I know, but, at 6-4, 295, should switch places with Irving, since he is heavier & more experienced at the 3-tech. The move would give our best perpetrator (Irving) less trash to move through to get into the backfield, which he is getting extremely good at. McClain & Thorton have played very well at the 1-tech spot. Rookie Maliek Collins needs more refinement, but is a keeper. DeMarcus Lawrence has been inconsistent, & needs to play harder & more aggressively every down. The pass rush is appalling, & it's time for the team to start drafting rushers in bunches-starting with the 1st round in 2017. No pot heads, PLEASE.

LBs: Sean Lee is playing like his Pro Bowl self. The young guys are encouraging. Hitchens & Wilson fly to the ball, & arrive with an attitude. From what I've seen from Nzeocha in the preseason, he's an excellent athlete as well. The jury is obviously still out on Jaylon Smith.

DBs: Two rookies have really caught my eye. Anthony Brown has been thrown into the fire, facing each opponent's best WR each week, & has more than held his own. He's been beaten several times, but has gotten little help deep. I don't know if it's the scheme they're running at the time, but too many times Byron Jones has arrived way too late on a bomb score. I know it's early yet, but I believe Jones' best position is at CB. Which brings me to the second rookie, Kavon Frazier. Every time he's in the game, number 35 is right there to help out when the ball is thrown in his vicinity. I believe that he has much better safety instincts than Jones right now, which is why I would give him a shot at starting next season, moving Jones back to CB. Church is solid, but is not a play maker. Overall, the secondary is woefully inept when it comes to making plays & turning the ball over. Thankfully, Malik Hooker, Ohio State's star FS is returning for another year. That gives us next draft to draft pass rushers like Tak McKinley & Dawuane Smoot, & corners like Quincy Wilson & Gareon Conley, & maybe trading back a few times to load up for 2018, so we can trade up for Hooker. This guy is another Ed Reed, with much more size. He has 6 ints. this season, 3 for pick sixes. That's the kind of DB we need to focus on if this defense is going to take the next step to greatness.
Irving should be progressing just like Dak and he's not...in my eyes. And I believe me lying eyes:D

He's his aaiihgt.

Irving has been much better at DT than at DE. He has been better at DT than Crawford was this season but Crawford has been as good as Irving at DE.

Kavon Frazier has not played many snaps (14 total) and I know some of them have been with him arriving after the catch and tackle including him arriving late on a TD catch. He looks OK but there is no way to say that he has better instincts than Jones by watching 14 snaps.
Crawford is invisible.

haha. I know you watch a fair bit of the all-22. What are we running more of this year? I know 2014 was more cover 3, then we went to more cover 1 last year. Haven't been able to watch as closely this year but it looks like everytime they're passing for 10+ yards we're in cover 2 and it's an out route.
I have not charted it, but they've been running more zone lately than earlier in the year. They never seem to be good in zone but it is better for run defense and they have to mix things up so that they're not too predictable.

When they run zone, then you often see the WR catch it between the CB and Safety. When they run man, they tend to play off man, especially Carr an that just results in easy catches in front of the CB.

All coverage schemes are difficult to play when there is no pass rush. It's a catch-22. They play off to prevent getting beat deep due to a lack of pass rush; however, playing off makes it easy for QBs to throw the ball quickly on short routes in front of the CBs which makes pass rushing more difficult.

You mean you don't trust film from a guy who doesn't know what All-22 is?
I really don't want to claim to be an expert. I just want to have an educated opinion if I'm going to debate something. If somebody else spends a lot of time re-watching the games then I'm interested to hear their opinion; however these guys irritate me that come in an debate plays and players when they've only watching the game 1 time and that was in a bar while consuming several beers on a TV across a crowed room.

He is good against the run as a DE. He was not that good against the run as a DT.

His success as a pass rusher has to come on either a bull-rush or a inside move. He is not really to "bend" the corner like a typical outside pass rusher. It does suck for him not knowing until after the season started that he would be playing outside. Those guys like to prepare their body for one or the other. He would likely prefer to play DE at about 20 pounds lighter than his weight to play DT.

I don't really know what they're going to do with him in the future. He gets paid too much relative to his ability at DE but even if they get better DEs I'm not sure if he is better than Irving and Collins at DT. I guess if TMcClain leaves that could open up a spot for him to move back to DT.

i hope we can retain Marinelli. I would love to see what he can mold and shape with actual talent at key positions like DE and LB (not named Lee)

I may not be an expert, but I did stay at a Holiday inn express last night. Lol, I admire your commitment to this team.

Haha, yup. No need for an explanation here. I'm sure I wasn't the only one that chuckled when he made conclusive statements on a guy who isn't even on the screen and doesn't know about All-22

I agree about Jones to CB.

He has improved this year but he is not producing interceptions or turnovers.

A guy drafted #1 like Jones needs to have more impact than just making tackles.

Claiborne is not coming back next year and we can not afford to draft another DB high to replace him.

So move Jones and lets move on from a project like Claiborne.

He has been a failure.

FWIW, I don't have time to watch film as much I as would like, but I was a high school DL coach for a good while, so I normally like to re watch a couple of times and focus on the DL, and I am seem seeing the same things that you are seeing. Crawford has been solid against the run and works hard in pass rush, but is limited. I don't think Irving plays nearly as well at DE as he does rushing from the inside.

Ideally, they could find a big time pass rusher to play RDE, move DLaw back to SDE and move Crawford back to DT. The only problem with that plan is that most of the elite pass rushers that can help us from day 1 will be long gone before the bottom of round one. We could go the FA route, but the elite pass rushers will likely too pricey for us. As you mentioned, I wonder if some of the Crawford's and DLaw's issues are due to their weight. Crawford trained be a 3-tech and DLaw trained to be the SDE. I wonder if our best bet is to have those guys both drop 20lbs or so, while drafting the best guy we can.

What were your thoughts on Mayowa? I know a lot of people on here are loving him now because of his sack, but I saw a guy that is weak against the run.

I think our secondary would be much better with a good front 7. If you look at the individual play, I can't really think of anyone in the secondary who is a liability (unlike previous years when I couldn't think of who WASN'T a liability). Claiborne was playing All-Pro before he got hurt, Brown is very impressive for a rookie, Carr and Scandrick are solid vets, Jones is our FS of the future, and Church is much more reliable than any other safety we've trotted out there. We'll have some decisions to make next season with Claiborne and Carr becoming free agents. Claiborne is much younger and demonstrated elite ability this year, but he also is consistently injured and might demand too much money. Carr, on the other hand, never gets injured and will probably come cheap. Plus, another year of development for Brown and Jones should do us good.

The big issue is the front 7, particularly DE. Sean Lee is our only stud LBer, but he's also 30 and had a history of injuries prior to these last 3 years when he's been surprisingly healthy. Hopefully Smith will be healthy but he'll basically be a rookie so we don't know what to expect. Wilson has looked solid at SLB and should be better next year. Overall, we might be good at LB if Smith gets healthy and Lee keeps doing what he does.

The D-line needs a lot of addressing. I actually like what we've done at DT. We finally have some big DTs who can stuff the run. This is much better than we had with undersized DTs Crawford and Hayden for many years. But we sorely lack any speed off the edge. D-Law kept showing up a second late in this last game. QBs have all day to throw. We either need two starting caliber DEs on our roster or a stud DE who can demand double teams and allow D-Law to do his thing. At least Greg Hardy made D-Law look better. Without Greg Hardy opposite him, he has 1 career sack in 15 games. With Hardy, he has 8 in 16.

Can't wait to upgrade the defense via the draft/FA next year. Speed on DE and couple of CBs who can cover. If we get a true FS, then move Jones back to corner. Guy needs to be more of a ball hawk. Hope Tapper can be one of those edge rushers and Jaylon becomes our dominating linebacker.
