This draft is a success if...

Well to be fair, TNew was taken #5 overall and also considered a blue chipper when he was drafted even though he was 37 when we drafted him.

Not sure if that's a typo or a joke, but it was funny nonetheless :laugh2:

For a couple of years Newman was top 5...He didn't get the INTs to show it because teams didn't throw at him. Also, he had hands of stone :laugh2:

He didn't do it for a long time or have the great impact that I think people wanted. Part of that was because he played on some defenses that were devoid of talent other than him, part was because he always had nagging injuries, and part was that he didn't consistently make big plays. But in terms of shutting down WRs, he was very, very good.

I would say top 5-10 I guess, there was a while there where he wasn't allowing TDs at all. His INTs were always low, so he really didn't get the respect he deserved, and when you draft a 48 year old CB you can't really expect alot of longevity out of him.

BTW, I see alot of 'part of that' in there, but not reason to make excuses for the guy.......;)

Too many people on here have a hard time understanding that reasons and excuses are essentially the same thing.

The draft will be a success if a FEW of the following happen:

1. Claiborne is what everyone expects him to be.
2. Crawford becomes a solid 5T in his career and is reliable early on in his career as a rotational player.
3. Coale develops into a #3 or #4 WR and is a glue ST guy.
4. 2 or more UDFAs make the roster and have an impact on this team whether it's as a starting lineman or as a pass rusher (Hamilton).
5. Matt Johnson competes for a starting safety spot and is an adequate starter.

Guess I just don't remember there being as much hype. If there was then I don't think I'd concider TNew a success.

There was plenty of hype around TNew, for a while there it was spun that he would be our answer at punt returner (best since Deion).....course that didn't work out too well.

Oh I remember, Suggs was more of my preference at the time, but TNew had the same hype with the added benefit of being able to draw a social security check to supplement his signing bonus.

I'll go with this...and don't forget Wilber cracking our rotation as well. But yes, if at least three of these things happen in the next 2-3 years then we did well.

I "want" Claiborne to be a top 5 corner, and eventually he may be. But if he is a top 10 corner, the be will be a solid starter for several years. That is a "hit" in my book.
