This Draft Will Be About The Scouts

For the Cowboys this year, I don't think that the new coaching staff is going to have a huge impact on the draft. If you remember, McCarthy and staff didn't go to the Senior Bowl this year, but did have some presence at the Combine. As they aren't able to do the in person visits that normally happen (will have to be done over video conference or Facetime), and missed a significant event to see personnel in person as well as speak with them, I think that this draft will largely be one driven by the scouts. The staff has provided their positional prototypes, but I think that their overall knowledge of the players will be much less than in past and future years.

It should be interesting to see the dynamic at play. I am of a belief that the scouts voices should be louder than the coaches to begin with due to their superior knowledge of the players.

May see teams trying to draft the players they met with at the combine or scouted heavily at the Senior Bowl, East - West Shrine games.
Agree, they will need to rely heavily on scouting reports, and what they see on film. As I am sure they are putting much more emphasis on this right now over any more possible FA's.

Given the scouts have been studying prospects for years, this absolutely has to be the way the draft plays out for the Cowboys. Coaches should have minimal input.

I hope McCarthy and Kellen, Billy Bean the scouts. Just like the movie, “Moneyball”. Who wouldn’t laugh? Of course Stephen has played Moneyball for several seasons now.

I disagree. I think the new coaching staff will have a huge impact, which has already been felt in the signings of McCoy, Haha, and Bell, who is one of the best blocking TE's in the NFL. His nickname is Belldozer!!!! Love it!!!

We are reported to have one of the best scouting departments in football. Thing is, scouts don't make the picks. They merely point out skillsets of players. The GM and staff then pick who they think.

Now, w/ McC on board, you're not going to see project picks like Hill. Instead, this staff will take what the scouts give them and use it better.

That's where all the signs point.

I don't know, McCarthy probably had more time sitting at his house all day last year to watch these college players than he ever would coaching an NFL season.

And I wonder how valuable these face-to-face interviews are anyway. These guys are so well-coached and rehearsed anymore, I'm not sure I'd trust what they say. A Skype session might be plenty to reveal if there's something about a player's personality you simply can't stand.
