This entire season depends on two players: Fergy and Julius

I dont care if its JJ or Barber, both are quite capable if the blocking improves. and i think it will given the fabini and kosier signings plus Flo coming back. Also the combo of TO and Glenn should also open up the run game. Not worried at all about that.

Exactely!! You are now starting to argue in circles!

The difference being, we KNOW we can throw the ball with Bledsoe, TO and Glenn. We dont know if we can run it or not. We can throw all we want, but if teams dont fear our rushing attack, we will not be as effective as we could be.

And how much easier is it to pass the ball if you can run it, or stop the pass if you cant stop the run?

Exactly, one is dependent on the other

It can help if you can run or stop the run, but it's not always necessary. The bottome line is, whether you can run or stop the run, or whether you can't, you MUST pass effectively and stop the pass -- at least better than your opponent does -- in order to win most games.

I agree....and I think Parcells thinks that way also, because, he loves to run the ball!

1st down...run right...2 yards
2nd down.. run up the middle...lose 3 yards
3rd down...run throw a pass for 4 yards...
punt! :D

But, that's the coach!

And, I totally agree with you, because the passing attack usually gains a lot more yards then a run....

The point is, a team that cant run cant pass as effectively because teams will not have to load the box and can keep more people back in coverage, and vice-versa.

Good teams will be able to pass well even when the opponent loads up to stop the pass and will be able to stop the pass without dropping extra players into coverage.

I think Bill will call games a lot more like Norv did in the early 90's. Pass a lot early and run a lot when you have a good lead.

This is a good topic, because it reminds me of the Eagles, and their lack of a running game...everyone in the world said that they should run more then they do...because their offense was pass, pass, pass, ... run here and there.

And, what did it get them? Well, the got to the SB...and lost, as expected! :D

But, this coming year, I hear the Reid is going to run the ball more...so really, I guess it just depends on the personnel?

I don't....

Parcells has the old mindset of playing not to lose....he likes to keep it close and try to milk the clock using time management....so, it's back to run, run, run some more...and if that don't work, he will try and run some more!

Hopefully, now with TO aboard, he will let Bledsoe open it up some...we shall see! ;)

It doesn't matter how much you run or pass, the key is how effectively you pass the ball.

If you run the ball most of the time but pass very effectively and stop the pass effectively, you're going to win most games.

If you pass the ball most of the time and pass very effectively and stop the pass effectively, you're going to win most games.

If you don't pass effectively and don't stop the pass effectively, it doesn't matter whether you pass a lot or a little, you won't win very often.

Adam's right, this is a passing league.

But there is also no question that being able to run the ball opens up the pass.

Playaction benefits as much as it kill a passing game.

Wow, that was interesting! Thanks...

So, I must be wrong, because those stats appear to be fairly even...!

I guess, it just seems to me that Parcells likes to run more often then not...but stats like that can be confusing!

It would be very interesting to see how those stats break down on a game to game basis...do you think it would be a 49/50 type of thing in every game? For example, I would think that the Boyz passed alot more in that first Eagle game then they ran...and in the bad weather games, they ran more?

So, see what I mean? Anyway, I guess it's all relative...depending on the game conditions, the opponent, and the game plan...but it sure did appear to me that Parcells just likes to run, run, run...then run somemore! :)

IMO the combination of Barber and Thompson is just as effective as one healthy JJ. Ferguson just needs to be decent, I'd be surprised if he can't manage that. Also last year showed how despite everything else the season can come down to kicker..

But you still have to pass well. You can run well and "open up the pass," but if you don't pass effectively after opening up the pass, you still won't win. And running well "opens up the pass" only when the opponent adjusts its defense by foregoing pass defense/pass rush in order to stop the run.

I do agree that Julius is very important to this offense. Teams that were able to run against us last year just ripped our hearts out.

But IMO, I would completely load up on defense. When you shut teams down on defense, it messes with the teams emotions. That's what the Steelers did to teams all year. They just put a foot to your throat, ran the ball, and when they had a chance for a big passing play, they took it.

I think if Julius fails Barber will fill in. Fergy will be fine. Henry is the player that needs to come to play this year and stay healthy.

IMO, Barber should start.

Adam I can go with that to an extent. What i am tryiong to point out is that sabermetrics fails to capture any dynamics between run and pass. If a team a la the 2005 Eagles were to completely sell out to the pass they are going to fail.

If you cannot run the ball it is very difficult to pass the ball.
