I think you guys are engaged in wishful thinking.

Scenario: You work for a good company in a management position. Your boss comes in and says, "Here's a nice raise and I want you to know we have big plans for you. Continue to do a good job and in 3 years we'll promote you to VP."

You are then contacted by a headhunter who sets you up with an interview with a competitor company. The competitor's chairman says, "We've been watching you and we like your performance. We want you to come to work for us. We are offering you a VP position and a "life changing" raise right now. While we are having some problems, you can name your own staff. You can craft the turnaround plan. If you are successful, the sky is the limit.

There is not a person here who would not seriously consider that offer. Jason Garrett may well get MULTIPLE offers similar to this. Garrett would be incredibly foolish (not to mention dumb) NOT to consider these offers. IMO he WILL be interviwed for HC positions in the off-season. I don't know where he'll stand, but I expect his name will come up for virtually every head coaching vacancy that arises.

You guys enjoy your kool-aid, but we are going to have be incredibly fortunate (and Jerry will have to be brilliant) to see Garrett on the Cowboys sideline next season.

Well, it's never as simple as this scenario. This scenario doesn't take into account organizational loyalty, family and work-related roots, being where he wants to be, and various other aspects that really can't be quantified.

Garrett may consider what you're saying, but he might also consider these other things that might just as be as important to him, if not more important. The other side is just looking at it from that aspect.

For the 1,000,000th time JG is here to stay.

No Cowboy fan should be worried.

When Garrett was hired by the Cowboys it was with the possibility of him being the HC unless we hired someone else, which we did in Wade Phillips. My understanding is that he was paid as if he were a HC, granted a first year HC, but a HC nonetheless.

He isn't likely to leave unless it was his dream job somewhere and they were going to pay him an obscene amount of money. From everything Jason has said, this IS his dream job and he isn't looking to go anywhere. Now if Wade is still the HC and Garrett is still the OC 3 years from now, I believe he would be willing to move on to greener pastures. I don't think that will happen as Wade is only likely to be here for a couple of years.

There's one job better, head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Err, OK, maybe owner of the Dallas Cowboys, but that one is out of reach.

are the jobs that are going to be available next year ?

Let's take a look by division:

NFC East:

Commanders - check
Eagles - check
Giants - maybe.

Giants are a veteran club who could certainly use " Red " to set Eli Manning straight. Having said that, they're probably going to make the playoffs which means Coughling will probably get at least one more year.

NFC West:

St Louis - check
Arizona - check
Seattle - check
San Francisco - Maybe.

The 49ers are, imo, a possibility. Still, I'm not sure how enthusiastic " Red " will be going to a franchise who, for all intended purposes, still don't have a franchise QB, do not have a #1 pick, and very little talent on offense.

NFC North:

Green Bay - check
Detroit - check
Minnesota - check
Chicagon - check

Nothing here.

NFC South:

Tampa Bay - check
New Orleans - check
Carolina - maybe
Atlanta - check

Carolina is, imo, THE biggest threat. They're the closest team to the Cowboys in terms of similar talent. Jake Delhomme is in the mold of Tony Romo. Steve Smith is just as big play WR as T.O. They have a two headed running threat in Foster and Williams. Their Defense, although underachieving because of injuries, is still very talented, and they don't have the pressure to win right away.

AFC East:

Miami - Check ( forget about Red coming down here )
Jets - Check
New England - for sure ( just kidding ) ;)
Buffalo - check

Nothing here

AFC West:

Kansas City - check
San Diego - check
Denver - check
Oakland - check ( even if available, Red wouldn't go there - see Sean Payton )

Nothing here.

AFC North:

Pittsburgh - check
Cleveland - check
Cincinnati - check
Baltimore - remote posibility.

If Brian Billick is let go at the end of the season, Ozzie Newsome might turn to a young OC like Red, but I think Billick will get one more year... maybe.

AFC South:

Indianapolis - check
Jacksonville - check
Houston - check
Tennessee - check.

Nothing here.

So, unless there are extremely surprising firings at the end of the year, there might be 4 jobs available: Carolina, San Francisco, Baltimore, and NY Giants. Out of those 4, Baltimore and NY Giants are even more of a maybe ( imo ), so that leaves 2: San Francisco and Carolina.

I think this is why Jerrah is not fretting over the possibility of losing Red next year. I think he knows that if he compensates him enough, the opportunities out there will not be as enticing, especially if the Cowboys end up in the Superbowl, and better yet, winnning it.

I dont think anyone smart would say they have been contacted.

He is right though. Greatest job in the world. All he has to do is wait a year or two and a high powered sports car is all his. Or he could take the 1st bus ride to the junk yard and pick up a Chevrolet Monza.

And if anyone knows what a monza is, I feel your pain because the only way people know about it is if they owned one

Garrett not contacted
Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said he has not been contacted by any college football program looking to interview him for a head coaching job.

There have been reports and rumors as far west as UCLA and as far north as Michigan that Garrett is on a list of candidates.

"I haven't been contacted by anybody," Garrett said. "My focus is the Cowboys and this job. I've got the greatest job in the world."

First, things that happen in corporate America don't really apply to sports. There are too many other factors.

Second, you left out a huge, very likely scenario. Suppose when you go to tell your employer you are leaving, he tells you that he sees you as upper management material and to prove it, he will match the salary you have been offered if you will just stay and wait for the next opening which should occur within 1-3 years. Lets also say you have worked for the company for 10-12 years, have many friends associated with the company, love the company above all other companies, and desire to one day be president of the company. If all that were true, I'd say it would be very easy to decide to stay and be patient.

I think those who hope and pray Garrett moves on because they don't want to see him as part of the Cowboys are the ones engaging in wishfull thinking. Garrett is a Cowboy at heart and his dream job is to be Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys. A significant pay raise, which Jones will have no problem giving him, should be more than enough to convince him to be patient. If he does leave, I have no doubt he will have a buyout clause inserted that gives him the right to persue the Cowboys job should it be available. I have no doubt he will be the next coach when Wade leaves.

Has anyone considered that if the Cowboys achieve their goal - a Super Bowl victory - in the near future, that Wade Phillips might CHOOSE to retire? He will have proven that he is a winner and can handle the demands of leading the most heralded team in all of sports, which is no easy task. If he succeeds, he might decide to quit while he's ahead and enjoy his golden years with the knowledge that his legacy is a good one. It doesn't have to be an ugly divorce-type situation. It could be a smooth, amicable transition from Phillips to Garrett. Of course, that's all contingent upon the Cowboys winning the Super Bowl soon, which isn't that far-fetched.

And everyone is forgetting a very important point. Jason was a QB coach for 2 years. He will have been a OC for 1 year at the end of this season. That's it as far as coaching experience.

I don't know about you guys, but if I'm an owner of a company that pays its 53 employees a combined salary of over 100 million a year, I want someone with a bit more experience.

Jason just needs a bit more seasoning and he'll be ready to go. Remember, wade is 60.

His comments does provide bit of relief but not to be a downer, how many times have heard some HC or coaching staff stating similar things and then later they make an announcement that they have a signed a contract with another team?

I hope that isn't the case with JG, but you never know.

Come on now...don't be a cheerleader for the morgue....

I agree the offers will be limited(with the Giant's job the only real worry) as far as from good pro teams.
I'm not too sure Jason himself is in a rush to make the next step and leave a great situation.

After another good season the pressure will really be on,but I believe Jerry will work it out.
