This is why I'm hesitant to extend Garrett

If you haven't seen it already, take a look at Sturms breakdown of the sacks in that game. It's a great thread. In most cases, the issue was execution, though, and not scheme. Or, it goes back to the discussion we were having on the board when Linehan was getting so much credit for giving a team an identity: we tried to stick with what we do and to make them come out of what they wanted to do, and we were unsuccessful at it. There's a fine line between establishing an identity and 'stubbornness.'

Actually, the line isn't even all that fine. It's just a function of whether or not you win.

I guess the Cowboys have always had trouble executing against Haslett.... Poor execution can be for many reasons. I remember one time Romo audibled for the blitz, with the Commanders stacked on the left side, and Witten actually adjusted in the play-calling to the right backfield of Romo, and the Commanders still had a free runner to Romo from the left. That was the play where Romo essentially made his own play and shoveled it to Murray quickly. That wasn't execution or a play design... that was luck,

The thing about the breakdown is competing opinions. I've seen articles, like that one, explicitely showing examples of breakdown where the QB had little to no chance. I've also seen others that say protection was fine but the QB didn't find the open guy on a hot route. I still have no idea what to think about the Washington game, I place it on being out executed, out coached, out played in every way. We lost that game fair and square, and everyone gets to enjoy the blame. From coaches to players.

That's definitely true: everybody shares the blame in a loss, and the buck stops with the head coach. I think what happened there was pretty straightforward, though. A fumble on the 5, another fumble from the other back after a huge play. A drop in the end zone by the star receiver. The 5 blown protections on the QB and the OL and the RB. That'll get you to overtime in a game we should have won relatively safely.

He puts you in positions to miss on your execution, that's for sure.

Then again, we've got a winning record (5-3) against him under Garrett, so we've done our fair share of executing against them, too.

That's not saying much. The Commanders have been horrible during this era, with teams abusing their defenses and secondary. I live in DC, so the hammer has been coming down on Haslett for years. With the amount of blitzing he does, teams other than us, don't really have trouble making him pay.

We will see how Linehan reacts though. As I said before, the second half of the season should be a gage to see how we adjust, because teams will know our tendencies. Hopefully, Linehan can adjust to the blitzes with Romo.

Go back to Percyhowards thread from after the skins game. Haslett had had our number for many years

We knew what was coming and were not prepared for it
That is on coaching

We never adjusted
That is on coaching

I know. Sadly. We count the cons, and ignore the pros. Wait until we have a nice long list, and then act incredulous why we'd keep a guy who's nothing but cons.

It's ok, though. Garrett's probably going to get the big extension, anyway.

Of course when it comes to the critics they will by pass any positives and hammer him on the negatives.
As I have said before, if it were my call I would have fired him after this past season. With a year remaining Jerry stayed with him I can understand that. As for the future? If he can get this team over the hump and into post season and playing well then extend the contract and if they fail then again I would say he needed to be fired. To me this is not personal I like him, what I don’t get is the overboard hatred of Garrett.

You give this guy all the resources on offense, draft picks on top of draft picks, two former head coaches on that side of the ball and a 100 million dollar investment at the QB position yet all of our losses this year are due to the offense's inability to generate points due to mistakes or an inability make adjustments in a game plan due personnel or what the defense is doing. The defense with a rag tag bunch is holding their own. I swear I've seen this story before.

Yep.

We all have seen it before.

Parcels left saying a guy like Room was "a coach-killer".

Those were his exact words about Romo and his play.

He's killed Parcels..

then Phillips..

now comes Garrett's turn.

And when he's gone..

what then?

Another Cowboy retread coach who gets to make Romo's obscene contract have to be validated yet again?

This borders on sports insanity.

We all know its not about winning in Dallas anymore.

Its about the stadium and making a profit.

As long at the balance sheet is where Jones wants it..

Nothing changes.
