Great post. lets hope we clean up these mistakes. We could be dangerous the second half of the season if we do.

We have given up 164 total points. The problem is 103 of those points where made easy by our Dallas Cowboys because of either turnovers or penalties.
Not to mention 7 more points given up on a Kick Return, and 4 points in safties.

Folks this is our biggest problem, no question. Just look at this crap.

Jacksonville game -
3 points given up after 15 yard personal foul
7 points given up after Bledose INT and Jags only have to go 32 yards
7 points given up after Bledose INT and Jags only have to go 40 yards

Washington Game -
3 points given up after 2 personal foul penalties for 30 yards.

Tennessee Game -
8 points given up after 36 yard pass interference penalty
3 points given up after 5 yard penalty gives 1st down on 3rd down.

Philly Game -
7 points given up after Mcbriar fumble and Philly only has to go 12 yards.
3 points given up after Bledsoe fumble
7 points given up after 15 yard Face Mask
7 points given up INT return

Houston Game-
3 points given up after 2 Face Mask penalties

Giants Game -
7 points given up after Romo INT and Giants only have to go 14 yards
7 points given up after INT returned for TD

Carolina Game -
7 points given up after 20 yard pass interference
7 points given up after Romo INT and Panthers only have to go 24 yards

Washington Game-
7 points given up after 15 yard Roughness penalty
7 points given up after 48 yard pass interference
3 points given up after blocked FG and 15 yard Face Mask.

In total we are giving up 20 points per game.

13 points a game are given up because of turnovers and penalties.
7 points per game are being given up because the other team earned it.

THIS IS WHAT HAS TO GET FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AWESOME WORK! I'd like to see this in its proper context. That would be compared to all our scoring drives to see just how much more we give than receive.
Now get to work!:laugh2:

Sometime earlier this year (maybe pre-season), Parcells said that he equated every 100 yards in penalties with a touchdown for the other team. If that means 6 points (no PAT), then every fifteen penalty yards we give up equals 1 point (actually 0.9, but close enough for this discussion). So when we get flagged for 143 penalty yards, that equals an 8.6 point boost for the other team.

I don't know how accurate this metric is, but I trust Parcells' experience in this department. The only fix I am aware of, besides better concentration on the players' part, is to play guys who commit less penalties....

I hope we get it fixed...soon.

Not one of the seasons in which the Patriots won their 3 SB's did I think they were the most talented team in the NFL. The adjectives I would use to describe them would be smart, driven, clutch, hardnosed, gritty, deep, and well coached amoung others.

That's a good run down of the traits it takes to field a successful team today.

As you pointed out, Brady was a talented young QB from the first day he took the field in 01, but he had the luxury of driving a very well oiled bus..players trusting themselves and each other to do their own jobs...no egos, plenty of niche roles solidly understood and executed. And the lone problem child isolated and finally suspended.

We could go up and down our current roster and the Pats in 01, 03, 04 and I don't think one of those Pats lineups equals ours in terms of talent.

A far cry from 03 when the Dallas roster was bereft of sufficient talent..but it's not the case today.

Best post/thread I have ever read on this site, and there are a lot of good ones to choose from.

We have the 5th ranked offense and 4th ranked defense...what you have detailed out is EXACTLY why we are 4-4.

I wondered myself how to make the phantom stats that show our weakness tangible.
You did a great job...:starspin

Yea and it's frustrating, they weren't a heavily penalized team last year, at least not until it was Tucker & Pettiti at the tackle position. The facemask penalties this year seem to jump out at me.

Face mask and False Starts are killing us, and I think we have had two chop block personal fouls (they seem to be calling that a lot)

What we don't have is a lot of holding calls (maby we should) but we are getting called for false starts/fask mask/PI and Hands to the face

Don't forget the 5 pts that resulted from the safety that wasn't, and the subsequent short field the Skins were given.

we seem to be getting alot of 'aggressive' penalties: facemask, hands to the face, chop block, etc.

and alot of teams get holding calls go unseen...by the officials

Agreed. He should make that catch. I am pissed too.

But.... in the end we have to execute.

Make the kick.
Block your guy.
Tackle #21
Hold onto facemask

We had four chances in the end. We didnt get it done

If this team stops making mistakes they go 10-6.

I refuse to believe we play any team on the schedule, besides Indianapolis, who is actually a better team. They may be executing better, but it doesn't mean they are a better team. If we get it together I fully expect a 6-2 finnish. Crazier stuff has happened.

I agree with everything, but I do have to say that sometimes penalties prevent touchdowns, case in point: The holding call Springs made on Crayton prevented him from scoring a touch down, where as we wound up only getting a field goal from it.

I've been waking up each morning thinking about that each morning. What could have been if TO caught that pass.

Interesting, but you'd have to also look to see the points that other teams give up due to turnovers and penalties. I'm sure Dallas is very high on this list, if not the highest. But, I really believe our average to mediocre pass rush is a problem. If we had a good pass rush, we'd be able to create more opportunities which would help offset the penalties, turnovers and other big plays that we give up.

You know, Champ, to piggyback on this, Dallas is the only team in the NFL that is in the top ten of all six yardage categories:

Total Offense: 5th
Rushing Offense: 5th
Passing Offense: 8th

Total Defense: 4th (tied)
Rushing Defense: 5th
Passing Defense: 10th

With Champs research, and using these rankings, THIS IS NO FLUKE!

This Dallas team is so much better than what it was in 2002. If only they can limit the mistakes. There is NO EXCUSE why this team cannot be 7-1 now.

Spilt milk now.
