This really puzzles me about Jerry Jones

Maybe this is happening and it just has not been mentioned, but I would think that it would be wise for Jerry to hire some motivational or psychology experts to talk to the Boys about their mental makeup as I believe that it why we have lost the last two years. We cannot play soft anymore and I would like to see a mean streak when it comes to the defense. We have the talent, but it has been proven over the years in every sport that the most talented teams do not always win and most of it is most likely mental.

I had a thought along those lines, but my idea was to have former players visit the team during camp.

I think it would be a great idea to contact former stars and arrange for them to visit during various days of camp.

Call Aikman, Irvin, Emmitt, Novacek, Moose Johnston, Deion, Darren Woodson, etc. and - schedule permitting - have them vist the team and let them know what it takes to win.

They've done it before to some extent, albeit in a less organized way, but I think a more focused effort would have more results.

Jerry could foot the bill for travel expenses, or he could split it with NFL Films since it would be a boost for Hard Knocks as well.

I think it would be good for the team and great publicity for the franchise.

They should include players from all the championship teams, especially defensive players from the '70s. That defense was nasty mean. Not to take anything away from the defense in the '90s, but that defense was just mean. Granted, the rules are different today than they were back then, but the mentality is the same ... search and destroy.

When i hear that i think of the scene in the movie The Natural...”losing is a sickness...”. But really, I really like what Burnett said in his blog that they lost because of 2 big plays. These guy have the right mentality, they have proven they can win and are winners. They just have to make a few more plays in the playoffs. That’s it.

I think Jerry Needs to stop talking to the media period.

I think he needs to back off. He loves the hype and the spotlight.

His constant talking up of players on this team can not be good for the coaching staff or the team.

I like jerry I just wish he would back off for awhile and let this teams leaders speak up and talk.

I'm all for psychology. But I think that the real issue here is that the team just doesn't have enough leader-types or the right kind of leaders. Perhaps part of that was Parcells -- you have to be a really strong leader (e.g., Darren Woodson or Dat Nguyen) or have a special personality (e.g., Tony Romo) to lead under a guy like that. That may have stunted the leadership growth of some guys and now we have a leadership vacuum.

Right now, December is our habit.. :(

Ugh, I know I'm going to regret this, but I agree with you. BP challenged players to be leaders, but would never really let them have any of the leadership control that goes with it. He wanted all control related to the team. Hopefully we'll have some step up after a year separated from BP.

If you are gonna have former players visit practice, make sure it is former SB winners and have them wear their rings.....

Nobody on this current team owns one except B. Johnson,,, and his is from TB,,, and rather dusty too.

If I am hungry for Prime Rib Steak, I don't settle for a Spam sandwhich... These guys need to get hungry for postseason success, and prove it.

All that stuff has to come from the inside. It can't be force fed from outside. Anger at losing can cause a new, lasting attitude, not pep talks.

I think a lot of this stuff a person is born with.

I guess leadership can be developed to some degree and motivation increased. But I look at many of the great Cowboys of the past and they arrived in Dallas with a passion for winning and fear and distaste for losing.

They were ultra-competitive like Staubach, or a perfectionist like Aikman, or a passionate, driven individual like Irvin.

The time to look at these things is before the draft. I think it's hard to change 'em after they're here.

Yep - plus the fact that (as I've stated many times before) there are no true leaders on this team on both sides of the ball.

This seems like a gimmick rather than true fundamental change. See the Saints, they had one year chock full of motivational speakers and burying accomplishments, the next year was a complete flop.

I don't think of it as meanness but as an unrelenting determination and a fire in the gut not to let anyone or anything stop you and never give up - that's how champion athletes think although it's hard to tell the difference between anger and determination.

I agree - this is how true champions think. They're not easily led and in fact, you better stay the hell out of their way or get run over; just gee-haw them a little and help them improve their technique and analyze what went wrong and help them correct it. Do everything you can to surround them with like minded people not a bunch of selfish me-me-me-ers and whiners.

Football is a tough game, both mentally and physically. Really, life is that way. People are so accustomed to here and now, everything immediatly, that I think sometimes we forget that it takes time. Young teams need to experience winning and losing. They need to learn how to win games. This is a young team. It's going to take some time for us to develop a championship calibur team. That's really how it should be. They don't need anybody to come in and tell them how to do it, IMO. Teams need to learn this on their own, by themselves. We have a tendancy to look at the Cowboys teams of the early 90s and the Pats of the last few years and think that teams should be able to win multiple championships on talent alone. That's usually not the way it works. Usually, it takes time to win. Time to learn how to be a champion.

The Cowboys were an exception because once that core of players gelled, we were good almost immediatly. That's the exception, not the rule IMO. The GMen won last year but that they had lost in the playoffs 4 times in 7 years, prior to the 2007 season, once in the Super Bowl (2000) to Baltimore. They had been trying for a very long time.

The Colts lost in the playoffs 7 out of 8 years prior to winning the Super Bowl in 2006 Season.

The Steelers had lost 9 times in 13 years, in the playoffs, prior to winning in 2005 and one of those times was to us in the Super Bowl.

New England won in 3 times in 4 years but, people forget that prior to 2002, the Pats had made 4 appearances in 7 years and lost. They have since gone to the playoffs 3 straight years and lost (last year in the Super Bowl) since there last championship.

Tampa Bay won it in the 2002 season but prior to that, they had lost in the playoffs 4 out of 5 years.

Baltimore won in the 2000 season and they too are an exception as that was really their first playoff year. However, they have lost 3 times in the last 7 years in the playoffs without another championship.

Rams, like Baltimore, won it in there first playoff season in 1999. However, like Baltimore, they they went back to the playoffs 4 times in 5 seasons after that championship and lost.

Broncos won back to back in 97-98 seasons but, 14 years with 8 playoff appearances and nothing to show for it, prior to those wins. They went another 5 times in 8 years after that and didn't win another.

Packers won it in the 96 season but they spent three years, prior to that losing to us or SF before winning it. They went another 8 times in 11 season and never won another.

Throughout the history of the Super Bowl, teams have paid there dues before winning championships. Evan great teams have suffered losing before being great. It's a process. Some teams, like Buffalo, never do learn it. This team will eventually learn the leasons and win a championship IMO. Until then, they have to go through the process. I don't think any amount of talk from former champs, former players/coaches or even shrinks are going to help. I think we just need to give them time to learn to be great and the rest will take care of itself.

The circus is here to stay. The coaches need to turn that spotlight into an external source of motivation the way they would in NE.

This is just a rumor, but I heard that last year before every game, Wade Phillips could be seen staring deeply into a mirror and saying "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like me." Maybe this will rub off on the players this year. I've heard good things about Wade's year two.
